Just looking for a decent robot cleaner for home I can get mum for Christmas.
Preferably suggestions based on experience using rather than reviews or word on the streets. My max budget for one is up to $400-$500.

They're all good, even the Gen 1 if you can find it cheap
I would spend a bit more and get the gen 2 instead… According to reports/reviews, it's much better for carpets and rugs. My gen 1 is really good but rugs are a problem for her (the robot is named Rose, very predictable).

I use a Roborock S50 and up until the laser sensor stopped working about a month ago it was great. Still waiting on parts but at least the eBay seller said he'd send it… still waiting though.
how long did it last before the sensor stopped?

Mine went after 9 months.
The Xiaomi Mi Robot (gen 1) is a fantastic machine. It's done 300 cleanups and hasn't missed a beat. The only thing that it's missing imo is the no-go zones. Have to use magnetic tape to isolate areas or upgrade to the S60 for that.
Avoid the robot and get a good stick vacuum instead - a much better solution!
Robots won't replace a conventional cleaner but the conventional cleaner won't operate itself.
I love my e35 Roborock. Turn it on and go to work.
