  • I + it because you went the extra yard to make the deal legit.

Recommend this for anyone who doesn't have any form of internet security.
It's not a waste of money and it's much more efficient than all freeware and it's $5.

May not be the best but $5 you can't really complain

it's much more efficient than all freeware

Big claim. The source you posted disagrees with you: http://www.av-test.org/#t2011-Q2
Avast (free) is rated higher in all areas.

Thanks for that link! I've always used Avast at home.

we use mcafee @ work, it's rubbish, we're forever using malware bites to actually remove the crap people mysterious get installed on their PC's.

I was going to say $5, it's a bargain, but considering the freeware tools available which are at least equal, that $5 could be re-invested into a happy hour pint…..

should add in title says its 2010 not 2011.

I had Norton 2010 and it upgraded to 2011 without a hitch. So I think same is true with other anti viruses.

  • I've always liked McAfee because it updates itself to the latest version and interface anyway.

But, it seems the seller doesn't accept PayPal, but Paymate instead - and because there's no email address entered for the merchant, it won't process.

Has anyone else got it to work?

  • I'm unclear on how long the licence is for? With av soft you pay for the subscription

  • Or you could just get this for $15 pick up - McAfee Internet Security 2011 OEM 3 User

+1 for the deal, but just to encourage discussion:

Whilst I think McAfee is a solid solution for larger corporate systems, for personal use I always found it a ridiculous resource hog on any machine I installed it. Things noticeably slowed down, regularly froze and when I decided to get rid of it: unecessarily complicated to purge.

My research at the time found vast amounts of consensus on those two points: ties up too much processing power, a pain to remove all traces of.

One of the main reasons I ditched my (fully licensed) version in favour of freeware was how much "lighter on their feet" many of the good ones ran.

I haven't had much experience in the last 2-3 years, has it gotten better for the home user?

Or you can use the free Microsoft Security Essential if you have a legit version of Windows.

    • Do you have to have a legit version of Windows to have MSE running?

      • AFAIK you need a legit version of Windows because MSE would only update if the Windows detects as authentic license.

I think another free one you should consider is Avira Antivir which is the one i recommend. However both MSE and Avira are only antivirus and do not have a firewall. For additional firewall you could consider using Comodo firewall or PC Tools Pro firewall.

TLDR: get Avira Antivir + Comodo Firewall, both are free and provide good protection.

        • Actually MSE does have a firewall

EDIT: my bad, Windows comes with a Firewall that combines with MSE

        • +3

I have MSE working fine and my win7 shows up as legit on a non-legit installation. But then again, I am a l33t h@X0r.

    • Agreed - MSE is excellent in terms of both OS integration, performance and protection.

    • +1

      MSE is the best.

  • McAfee has had a lot of issues in the recent past, Officeworks has stopped selling them since 2009/2010…

  • We use this at work and it's a terrible product that hogs resources and slows our machines to a crawl. Try starting up something like Eclipse with this running and you'll see what I mean. I won a copy of this and had trouble giving it away.

    • Yeah - any Java process and McAfee will consume an entire core and grind away for 45 seconds.

  • Shame even at $5, I'd still use MSE over it.

Does anyone know how MSE rates against Avast Free?

    • Read above where a few have posted links to www.av-test.org which compares, tests and rates av offerings quarterly.

Thanks guys: I hadn't seen this site before and it's a damn useful one imo.

    • Apparently not great in terms of detecting Malware threats (it still does, just not as well) BUT it also claims that MSE doesn't return false positives. In my experience this is false, MSE does return false positives as well.

It is very easy to use though, as the tests note.

  • The seller did not set up the paymate correctly and it would not allow you check cost Merchant email is missing.

  • +1

Mcafee takes so much memory space. Norton Antivirus has much smaller footprint.

  • Read all the adverse comments about McAfee after agreeing to buy, and also found the required email address is missing like Griffin and Syswong. Will keep using Comodo.
    Indy.

  • MSE user these days, seems to have much lower impact on the system than most others.

  • +1

Used Macafee and nortons in years past - never happy
Was a happy user of AVG but heard bad things and tried MSE
Had a few false positives and a small malware hiccup easily fixed with malwarebytes
Decided to try Avast free which IMO is the best of the free AV
No firewall (I use windows) but more features than any other free and still very light on resources
Very easy to use and the lady tells me each morning 'Avast database has been updated' makes me think of Startrek

  • +1 for Avast with Windows Firewall. Light on resources and more importantly for us Ozbargainers..Free!
