Which DVD Player?

Hi,

Buying a DVD player as a gift this Christmas. Budget is $50.

Essentially it looks like I have a choice between:

1) Second tier brand with HDMI:
Example: https://www.bigw.com.au/product/jvc-5-1ch-hdmi-dvd-player/p/…

2) First-tier brand without HIDM:
Example: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/lg-dp132-dvd-player

My questions are:
1) How important is HDMI to picture quality v the standard red/yellow/white cables when running a DVD?
2) What are the differences between a first- and second-tier brand for a DVD player (i.e. on screen ease of use, manufacturing quality etc)

Note the ability to play multi-region DVDs isn't a requirement in this instance.

Cheers!

Stretch the budget to $98 and get a Panasonic 4K Blu-Ray player instead? - https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/panasonic-smart-3d-bluray…

    • Agree and if you can't do that buy your second tier choice. Does the screen you're connecting to even support composite input because that's all the LG one has which is a joke.

      • Yep immensely frustrating! Although they probably do it for the blu ray upsell

    • a Panasonic 4K Blu-Ray player

It doesn't play 4K (UHD) Blu-rays, it only upscales to 4K.

    • Not an option but thanks - it's going against my ozbargain mentality to work to a $50 cap when there is better value at higher price points!

  • HDMI is probably better, while the other RCA cables can be problematic.

HDMI is a little easier to connect, unless you have a very old TV

Second tier would be fine in most cases

And its far cheaper here $35 - (use cashback as well)

Or ebay with free delivery about $30 ($32 less 5%)

How important is HDMI to picture quality v the standard red/yellow/white cables when running a DVD?

Extremely. it's 4 times the fidelity.

As above, you're better off getting a streaming device (million times more convenient, probably more cost effective too)
or a 4K UHD Bluray player so you can play back all of the modern formats of "DVDs".

If you want an actual DVD player, (those things from 20+ years ago) you can probably get one for free since people throw them out.
Free or $20 or less. No one wants them anymore. Blu-ray has been out since 2006.

    people still use dvd players?

My 80+ year old parents do as they have a fairly large DVD collection though the player is actually a streaming 4k unit so they also use Netflix and Prime on it also but I think DVDs are still the primary for some reason.

I don't think I've watched anything on a DVD for about 10 years,

ahhh I still have laserdisc machine in the garage we bought about 25 years ago… and back then we paid like 2 and half thousand dollars crazy when I think back.

Pre-owned Xbox 360 from Eb games?

Or you could softmod a Wii to play DVD's

      • To be frank, even an old PS2 would suffice, but a PS3 would be much better.
There's some Slim Models on gumtree for $50 with some controllers and games. Plus it can go online for free. Not to mention it can play things off CD, DVD, BluRay, Hard drive, USB, or some online streaming.

The Xbox One S would probably be even better overall with its 4K-HDR10 support, and better looking games (bonus), otherwise you can use a Nvidia Shield TV or an old Dell Optiplex SFF… but all of those are definitely outside the budget!
