The company is planning to officially launch its new 100/20Mbps tier in May 2020

Yeah, I don't think anyone is coming back to this thread in 6 months just to update you…

To deliver more immediate benefits to customers, NBN Co will launch a ‘Hot 100’ campaign on 1 January 2020, making the $58 effective charge for the 100/20 bundle discount available to RSPs for the 100/40 discount bundle, instead of the current $65 effective charge for that bundle, as an interim measure until the new 100/20 product is launched in May 2020,” NBN Co said in a statement.

So if they pass on in full, you'll see a $7 price difference between 100/40 and 100/20… yay?

"Only in AU" would I expect TEMPORARY Discounts

Look the 100/20 speed is LESS VALUE,
      and you Won't be getting

      • NBN is a major failure by objective metrics (time, speeds, cost).
Just compare us to Canada, similar population size and land mass… but while they're averaging about 30Mbps we're barely hitting 15Mbps. Half that, despite starting at similar speeds and making the upgrade to fibre optics. Or even worse when compared to Finland, Norway, or Sweden.

I think if we get proper Gigabit Internet (1,000Mbps) on 5G in the next couple years, people can ditch their Home Connections, and get something that's both faster and cheaper. At least that seems to be plausible, and something that could help us catch up with the International Standards.

        • We can already get gigabit off the current fibre network. I have it running in several states already 😉

Restricted to RSPs mostly and some of the private high tier Telstra plans will out perform some RSPs due to better infrastructure.

          • @Clear: Not true.
NBN has many issues at the node, I remember reading a report about it earlier this year, so they can't provide Gigabit (or greater) connection in its current state to certain FTTP. They would need to make hardware updates apparently. Which is why it's very limited, and those people that have access to it, are paying through the roof. And then the elephant in the room which is FTTC and FTTN.

All I know is that sometime in 2009 they promised to rollout NBN as FTTP with minimum 100Mbps connection, and it was supposed to be finished in about 5 years, and cost us less than $30 Billion. We're basically in 2020 now, about 10 years later, its costing more than $60 Billion, with most NBN users getting roughly 40Mbps. Not to mention that ADSL infrastructure rollout was still happening in 2018 as part of the new "mixed strategy".

…I belive the initial estimates were based on the metrics seen in North America/Europe rollout of fibre connection. Our metrics have us with double the cost, half the speed, and double the rollout time. We're basically x8 worse than those other nations racing to step into the digital era. So something really has gone wrong.

            • @Kangal: Not true? So NBN, several RSPs, ACCC and Speedtest are all lying when they say our gigabit plans on FTTP are not actually gigabit?

              • @Clear: Not true, as in, Gigabit through NBN (as it is currently) only works for a minority of people. It's just like how we had 4G back in 2011, it was there in very limited access… but mainstream didn't come until 2013, most people didn't shift until 2015. Dunno, I just want the OzDeals to roll in faster ; )

PS: Wtf is up with IVI, isn't he a long-time user and mod… why are they spamming like that? Hacked?

                • @Kangal: Pretty much anyone with FTTP has that capability. The only state that would have that is Tasmania, while the rest is patches around WA, Sydney etc.

IVI is an odd one. We haven't worked him out yet.

            • @Kangal: MyRepublic claim ACCC
              show them as highest-
              speed, albeit by very
              small margins, unlike
              ~2 years ago, when
              100/40 cost ~$ 60/mon
              [1st 12-mon contract]

            • -1

              @Kangal: I'd bet most
              get 40Mb/Sec
              due to CO$T,
              Not limited
              FTTN reality

              We enjoy the
              fact, that
              few share an
              FTTN-box w/
              us.

              OTOH, we now
              pay ~$60/mon
              for HALF the
              earlier speed
              for "NBN50"

              We can incr.
              our Speed any
              month we like
              (of course,
              paying more,
              for that mon)

              & we can slip
              back to $60pm
              for NBN50 the
              next month,
              with No Pivot-
              fee(s).

Nah I reckon some of the characters got lost cause of OP's slow internet. He should be able to edit this post when he changes to a better plan.

  • NBN should be selling this to consumers and avoiding the pointless RSP.

The private sector in Australia charged some of the highest prices in the world. Despite this they refused to upgrade their infrastructure. Well, now they should piss off and go out of business instead of being pointless middlemen jacking up the prices.

    • In some cities NBN are quietly ripping out the FTTN and putting in FTTP 😉

    • +2

NBN should be selling this to consumers

NBN doesn’t want to deal directly with PITA customers. They’re happy to have the RSP do that.

    • +1

Rsp can do hidden cost savings with budget routing, over subscription of nbn for customers etc to maximize profit, easy clap

Essentially legal scams as they don't have to disclose how they are saving money while telling you the problem is with your equipment l0l.

      You gotta wonder:

      Why do OTHER PLACES
      enjoy Abundance [as
      Govt policy..?],

      while an artificial
      Energy Market leave
      us paying "TOO MUCH"
      for our power..?

      I think Quebec or
      maybe Montreal also
      enjoy Cheap Power

      Why not AU?

      Burning toxic Coal
      only spoils our Land
      (as does Fracking),
      as Nuclear is BANNED

      Why "only" in AU?

      • Because Canada has cheap oil from fracking. While Quebec doesn’t have much oil and bans fracking, it still benefits from the royalties nationwide, and cheap electricity from gas fired generation.

Likewise they access nuclear (19 power stations)

Just like many other countries that moved from coal.

While Canada doesn’t have anywhere near the solar power generation as we do, it does also generate 60% from hydro, guess all that melting snow has some benefits

  • NBN are going in the wrong direction. They should introduce 100/80 plans for $7 extra. If the uptake for 100/40 is too low, it's most likely because it is the most expensive option and many people are averse to paying for the top tier product. By introducing a more expensive premium product, the 100/40 price point becomes more palatable. This would also move the state of the Australian Internet forward, rather than backward as the slower plans are doing.

  • I'm paying $75pm home phone

          • @R3XNebular: It's unlimited fam

            • @capslock janitor: Excellent, trying my luck now. Bit concerned about the 24 month contract but I suppose if the NBN is that bad TIO or Optus Complaints could probably break contract. Wish me luck…

              • @R3XNebular: Good luck haha howdy. You've been Optus 10+ years what makes you think you'll leave them now? Yeah good ways to crack the contract! Try a few salespeople

                • @capslock janitor: Tried 3 no luck, trying again. Maybe on the 10th go I might get it LOL
