Freakonomics brought a lot of data
voices & Science together in their
Podcast No. 398, aired 2019-Nov-20:
The show's been a reliable source
of info on a wide range of impor-
tant issues, often Science- &/or
economics-based (w/ Data-related),
& All Podcasts are available Free,
online; eg, NPR has 'em Free; some
require registration, maybe free?
So, to distinguish this post from
apparently the Less Science based:
"What do you Think/How do you Feel
about Vaping?" kinds of posts,
I've opened a New forum topic, &
I'd like it to Remain Separate, so
folks can choose between:
Evidence-/Science-based commenting &
Less data-/evidence-based debating
Why is "the Vaping Crisis" big in USA,
but "almost unheard-of" in UK?
(Hint: A particular oil seems to be
causing injuries + deaths, I think)
Why did "so many" people use JULL-
liquids [in USA], & Why do "very few"
even both to vape in the UK?
(Hint: JUUL has a special formulation AND
includes LARGER quantities of it [to make
addiction more likely, & UK's gov't limits
the amount of, eg, Nicotine, etc. permitted
in such liquids; fewer get addicted there):
Also, JUUL devices are Non-Refillable,
so, it costs more to be a JUUL-addict.
- :
- SIEGEL: And that is that the
- UK has regulated these products.
: - And most importantly, there is
- a limit on the amount of nicotine
- that’s allowable.
-
You can only have up to 20 milligrams
- per milliliter of nicotine in your eLiquids.
-
In the US, there’s no limit at all.
: - So Juul comes along, they put 54 milligrams
- per milliliter in their product, and
: - it’s no surprise that kids are getting addicted.
: - People may not realize this, but there is
- Juul in the UK, but they Don’t have a youth
- Juuling problem.
: - And the reason for that is you Don’t
- have Juul at 54 milligrams per milliliter,
- you have Juul at 17.
: - In this country, these products have
- Not been embraced for harm reduction,
: - but they’ve actually embraced eCig
- as a harm reduction strategy.
: - And as a result, the health care costs
- in the UK are going down.
Why do smaller %'s of folks in UK even
bother to vape at all? (It could be due to
UK Gov't EMBRACING Vaping as "Harm Reduction"
for Tobacco smokers, ie, rather than trying
to "regulate" Vaping or some "flavors" or the
amounts of some ingredients, etc.)?
(Tell someone Not to do something (or, that
it's illegal) & you can expect some to want
to do it, all the more.)
Anyway, if you're a "vape shop" or gov't
regulator of such businesses or products,
you might find it interesting
If you've got kids vaping, you'll want
to hear this ~45 min. program in the
Freakonomics series.
Finally, after playing the above podcast,
I enjoyed the docu:
- "Merchants of Doubt" (2014)
FWIW, I recommend it.

It was a long 15 days between posts there!
Do we get a TL;DR? Somewhere in there is a question, I'm sure of it!
