Travel Insurance for Multiple Travellers - Buy Separate or as a Group?

Hi Ozbargainers

Here's a question for all you seasoned travellers out there.

I will be going on a holiday to Vietnam over the Christmas break with two of my friends from work. We are going for the same amount of time (9 days) and purchased our flights together. We will be staying together in the same accommodations. Now what we want to know is whether we should:
1. Each purchase our own individual insurance, or
2. Purchase one insurance policy to cover all of us

We are tossing up between TID ($85pp before discounts) or 1Cover ($71pp). To include 3 adults on the policy comes to $67pp for 1Cover and TID appears to only allow 2 travellers on one policy.

Although a joint policy appears to save duplicated paperwork and is $4 cheaper per person, we are concerned that the joint policy might not be as good as 3 individual policies as if something happens and we need to lodge a claim, the claim would be reviewed together by a single case manager rather than case-by-case.

Does anyone have some insights or experience with this in the past?

Thanks

I suggest you go with one, if you go with multiple there is a good chance each insurance company is going to try and push you to claim with the other company. One of the common clauses I see is "do you have other insurance?"

  • Do you not need to have the same home address for a multi traveler joint policy?

    • no

A single policy for all travelers means the per item limit will apply to the combined travelers. For example if lost luggage limit is $3,000 then that would be the total you could claim. Individual policies means you could claim 3 x $3,000

  • Hypothetical question? for individual policy, if one person need to be in hospital, other two wouldn't be able to stay with that person help them and make a claim. Would it?
