What Books Do OzBargainers Read? and Where Do You Get Them?

What books do ozbargainers recommend reading? What are your favourite books of all time? What are new releases are you reading or looking forward to read? I’m mostly interested in fiction but open to other suggestions.

Do you typically buy hard copies new, ebooks, borrow from the library or buy second hand.

Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

Generally buy new. There's something really pleasing about that new book smell and being the first to crease the spine…

    • Thanks, I used to enjoy reading fantasy and dysutopian literature, so I may well enjoy this. I also like the feel of new books, but am not completely opposed to second hand. I’ve never gotten into ebooks though.

      • You can still get the first few series on audiobook in the Humble Bundle deal to see if it's for you (or listen to demo samples for free): https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/495114

I don't mind used for things like travel guides or a random book buy from The Book Grocer or charity shop, but not for a collection.

        • Nice! Thanks, audio books are great, this could be my next thing to get stuck into

  • +1

    Tal vs Botvinnik 1960

The narration by Tal is as exemplary as his tactical genius.

    • Thanks, a title I would never have stumbled upon if I hadn’t asked.

    • Serious chess player?

  • Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief by Jordan Peterson

    https://www.amazon.com/Maps-Meaning-Architecture-Jordan-Pete…

Why would people in different places and times formulate myths and stories with similar symbols and meanings? Are groups of people with different religious or ideological beliefs doomed to eternal conflict? Are the claims of science and religion truly irreconcilable? What might be done to decrease the individual propensity for group-fostered cruelty?

    • Thanks, I think I remember when this book came out. Should be an interesting read.

  • Just finished: To Obama, might not be your cup of tea but I found it profoundly moving
    Currently reading: Sapiens, again non-fiction
Favourite at the time: anna karenina, 1984, Starship troopers, All quiet on the western front
I do mixture of hard copy, kindle and library

    • Thanks for the suggestions!

  • Just got All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness

OzBargain forums, fair amount of it is fictional.

Nah, it's all facts but it's for a friend.

      Council library ebooks

  • There’s this place where you can borrow books, and you need to be quiet. Can’t remember the name though, but its like you can borrow them and return them

    • shhhh! ;)

  • Terry Pratchett. Discworld series, Good Omens, Nation, etc.

    https://wiki.lspace.org/mediawiki/Bibliography

We lost him way to soon to Alzheimer’s. A cruel disease for someone that brilliant.

You can borrow them from the Library.

There are a number of small free book libraries springing up, libraries, op shops, second hand book shops, etc.

    • Thanks, yep I have been meaning to read Terry Prachett I remember my brother was really into his books as a teen. Alzheimer’s is cruel for anyone, but seems awfully sad for someone with a brilliant mind.

      • I would also recommend Jasper FForde. The books are seriously bonkers but great fun. There are the Thursday Next series, the Nursery Crimes ones, Shades of Grey (not 50 shades), etc. Robert Anton Wilson - Shrodinger's cat. If you can get hold of it The Gun Seller by Hugh Laurie is hilarious.

  • I've recently been reading all 41 Discworld books, I really enjoy John Connolly and his Charlie Parker series which I got into when I was around 13, I also read all of the Wheel of Time (14 books, 16,000 pages) a couple of years ago, which actually took me a bit over a year to do. Oh and also read all 15 books in The Dark Tower series by Stephen King. Hoping to get into some of Brandon Sanderson's work soon, I read on my Kobo e-reader which I just love.

    • Thanks! I hadn't heard of the Wheel of Time series. So much reading to do!
