Bidding on iPhone 11 w/ Plan - What if Seller Breaks Contract?

Saw a few sealed iPhone 11 auctions on eBay lately. Watched several and they seem to finish with pretty good prices — approx $200 lower than RRP. A few said the phones are on plan but not needed. I know they are most likely unlocked already, but my concern is, if I got the phone and the seller breaks contract without paying out/returning phone (apparently on my hand), what will happen to the phone? Does the ISP have right to block the phone IMEI? I know paypal has buyers protection in place, but it’s only valid for 180days. What if the seller fleece after this?

Sorry if this is silly question as I’ve never been bonded to a phone contract and would love to shop bday present for my significant other wisely.

  • If the plan is stopped and they do not return the phone back to them, then 100% chance they will block the imei.

My bigger concern would be if the seller has bought the phone, buys insurance on the phone, sells the phone and then reports it to insurance as lost or stolen. The phone will get blocked and the buyer will end up with a paperweight. The seller keeps the money from the sale and gets a new phone from insurance.

      This. Quite common

    • Thank you for your advice! Very useful!
Just a quick question, does seller's feedback rating and years of activity affect they will do legit things or not? I have noticed some brand new accounts with ZERO feedbacks also some with 1000+ feedbacks and > 10 years. Do they contribute to the risk factors? (Well I gave up trying bidding, just out of curiosity)

Usually the more positive feedback, the better. But you should also look at the types of items they've been selling. If it's lots of $1 or $2 items and suddenly a $1,500 item, then I'd say that they've used the cheaper items to boost their ratings and now trying to go in for the kill.

Having said that, someone's got to start somewhere so the person with zero feedback could be totally legitimate.

There's no exact science to it. Just use your judgement and make use of any paypal protections.

  • Why take the risk?

    • Because it's apple. And $200 less from super affordable RRP of $1800 is sooo attractive… Can't resist this kind of bargain of the century, can you bro?

Given how much you’re already spending, $200 extra for the RRP, a legitimate product and peace of mind seems very reasonable.

OP is too sexy for android….

    • What are you talking about? This is for my partner and I have been using my Pixel 2 XL for nearly two years and still loving it. If you are kind enough please send me $200 instead of trolling online with sarcastic words. Not funny at all and very mean.

Get JB-HiFi gift cards and buy your iPhone new from them.

You can get it for 5% so that’s 5% off your iPhone.
