Which JB Hi-Fi sale had half price DVDs recently?

Hey guys,

Sometime during the last year a mate went to a jb HiFi sale and got around half price off DVDs and CDs.

He can't remember which sale day it was. Would it have been black Friday sales? :)

Cheers

People still buy DVD's? Essentially the blurry lowest quality setting on youtube? I imagine it happens quite regularly for DVD's, and there's always bargain bins around 2 for 10 etc. Just wait for Black Friday and see I guess.

    • 144p?

    • A typical DVD is 480p, while the lowest YouTube quality setting is 144p.
There's a fair bit of difference.

      • +1

Mostly stream but I have my Apple TV set to display 720p, and then rent iTunes movies in SD (480p) because the prices are cheaper, looks sharp enough to my eyes on a forty-something-inch HD TV.
(People have called me out on this method before, along with the obligatory “are we in 2019?” comments)

When watching the occasional DVD though, I use an old Panasonic DVD recorder-combo player, which up-scales DVD resolution (which is 576p for PAL in Australia) to HD and sends it to the TV via HDMI.
And it looks great, as far as I know up-scaling is a variant of interpolation and the image looks sharp and detailed, I have yet to ever think it is either blurry or pixelated.

So I am satisfied with saving my money by either renting & streaming in 480p or playing the occasional DVD and watching it up-scaled to HD.

Note: when renting iTunes movies in SD, it is a $1 saving on every rental. You may think it is very little, but it applies to all purchases, and I always rent the discounted movies ($3.99 / $2.99 / $1.99 rentals).
        So in the end it’s a 20% / 30% / 50% saving every time I rent.
So a $1.99 rental down to $0.99 is a big saving, and I rent the 99c movies the most.

DVDs and CDs? same isle as 8track?

    • Yep, the mainland.

  • Nah, they have BOGOF DVDs and Blu Rays once or twice a year. I think one is closer to EOFY.
