Not quite as cheap as a couple of weeks back (59.20@Futu) but still an alright price if you are needing a 480GB 2.5" SSD
Comparable to the Crucial BX500 & WD Green SSD's

No, likely to have Toshiba NAND chips. It's also DRAMless and might be using Phison based SSD controller chip.
This is a DRAMless SSD. That's why the price is comparable to BX500 (also DRAMless).
Should I get this or MX500 for use as boot (OS) drive for 3 year old laptop?
I would get something faster IMO however saying that if you're coming from a 500gb hdd even 7200rpm, then yeah why not?
I would rather go with a Samsung 860 etc. and screw the cost.
Sorry forgot to say I have 250GB ssd in it.
Depends on your usage pattern and whether you intend to move the SSD to another laptop or PC later on. MX500 has 5 year warranty.
3 years old laptop so Kaby Lake based processor? Well, it is probably not worth overspending on upgrading a Kaby Lake based system. Intel only started offering more decent CPUs with Coffee Lake / 8th gen CPUs.
Thanks
3 year old laptop should already have NVMe port, which 'll be similar priced but faster perf
Is this just a Samsung rebranded and packaged as Gigabyte?
