It blows my mind that people can write a three page review of an unmanaged switch.

What's to review? You plug it in and it goes.

If it was a managed switch that did vlans and trunking and all that well then sure… but geez, Tom's Hardware isnt what it used to be.

    • Summary of review: works the same as other similar switches & looks nice.

      • Review does emphasize the size. Sometimes big isn't a good thing. It also gives you an idea of throughput.

    • +3
      • Speeds can be awful.
      • It can be glitchy or unreliable - drop connections, refuse to connect without constant restarts. My D-Link and Soniq routers seem to require reboots every few weeks.
      • Some don't maintain speed.
      • Some overheat and/or draw more power than you'd expect.
      • How much space it takes up and how heavy it is becomes important if space is limited or you want to wall mount it.
      • Features like telling you whether it has a solid gigabit connection without having to dig it up using commands or GUI in software.
      • Cheaper gear can have a tendency to die.

To give you an idea I bought the Tenda one that was posted here the other day and this one. This one is about twice as big and three times as heavy. I also bought the 5 port version of the Tenda that is tiny.

You might as well say the same thing about a car. "What's to know. You get behind the wheel, put it in drive and press the foot pedal and steer".

      • This is an unmanaged switch. It's pretty much a glue and go Realtek gigabit ethernet based chipset switch. Nothing to get excited about.

The review is pretty brief as well. No mentioning of backplane bandwidth. Jumbo frame not tested. You don't gain much info from the review. If you get a managed switch, then obviously there is more to think about. Unmanaged switches - essentially dumb switches, nothing to hype up about. It has Linksys label, but deep down, it is a Realtek switch. How good can it be?

        • +3

You seem to both want a more detailed review (Backplane bandwidth and jumbo frame testing…sorry I haven't found one) and no review at all (because it's too simple to need one). I can't give you both. My only suggestion is that you ignore the review if you don't find it useful. I'm hoping other people will.

For me the review on cheap gear is usually about flagging whether there are any problems. If ratings or reviews are low I tend to avoid so I don't end up wasting my money on something that's going to drive me crazy and/or not work reliably for my purposes.

I don't get excited about switches - managed or unmanaged - any more than I would about cutlery, but I do get excited about getting it for a good price.

          • @syousef: I prefer a detailed review. The backplane info lets us know whether any additional corner has been cut (i.e. whether it is basically 5 port bandwidth with 3 extra ports whacked in, or proper 8 port). Jumbo frame info is also useful.

You already bought the Tenda one (for ~$10). We also had another Linksys 5 port gigabit switch for $10 early this year. I understand some people need 8 port gigabit switch(es). If you are happy with the price, then sure, get it. Just don't over-hype it. Comparing it to a router isn't really a good comparison. Most of the time, a router has issues due to inability to handle too many connections, WiFi compatibility glitches and/or subpar firmware. I wouldn't classify a router as a dumb/unmanaged network device.

Maintain speed isn't really a strong point of this switch (based on the review). Also, do bear in mind that the review was written in 2016. Network device makers do release new hardware revisions and with different chipsets.

@netsurfer: See this is exactly why I don't usually bother posting deals. It's not worth dealing with this kind of nonsense. Please show me where I "over-hyped" anything! In fact I pointed out the weak points - that it is large and heavy - right up front. Quit attacking me and the deal I posted just because you don't like the product or prefer a different supplier or don't have Ebay Plus. It meets all the criteria on OzBargain for a deal.

Also as I have already said I have had plenty of trouble with routers and switches back in the day and I still own switches that regularly need power cycling.

And if you're so damn intent on a detailed review, write one yourself. I posted the best review I could find and others have confirmed they found it useful (and you're still arguing with them!). You will find very few in depth reviews such as you are requesting for cheap unmanaged switches. You are being quite unreasonable!

I posted a deal. The price is good for that model. And the model is good based on the information I have. Is it the cheapest switch available? No. Is it the best available? I don't see any evidence for that. Is it a good mix of recognized brand, not many reported faults and price for performance. I think so.

That's it. Take it or leave it. If you have better deals to post by all means you're welcome to do so.

I don't understand why you would get the idea about I think these switches need no review at all? tonyjzx might feel that way.

Please don't get upset so quickly on everyone's comment. I was commenting on the review you posted isn't that great (which I believe I am entitled to). Mate, look at the +ve votes tonyjzx get.

Please don't take it personally. My main gripe was that review. It might be a Tomshardware review. However, it is somewhat disappointing. SmallNetBuilder used to be part of the Tomshardware group I think so I expected more.

Also, with the issues you are facing, the review clearly does not cover the key ones. Most reviews don't. Hardly any review do device sociability / compatibility testing. Also, when it comes with Gigabit ethernet, the device, cable and the router/switch all matter. I have devices which are fussy on cable (lousy cable simply won't hit gigabit consistently). You need to check forums and do your research. That review also didn't try to blast heaps of connections on the swtich (again, most reviews don't do that for unmanaged switches). Deep down, with most of these unmanaged switch reviews aren't very useful. D-Link and Soniq… well I am sure by now you know… they clearly cut corners everywhere. They are cheap because they cut corners.

Besides, if your concern is compatibility and reliability, what makes Realtek attractive?

    • +1

Actually, I read it and thought the content is quite solid.

      • +1

So did I. I particularly liked the brief teardown and the PCB photos, and the benchmarks. You can see the switch worked well with 2 endpoints but started to slow with more.

    • +1

The review is fairly average to be honest. It does indicate the chipset used - Realtek. That's useful.
No backplane information, no jumbo frame testing done. It's just a very basic review. Unmanaged switch so the expectation is fairly low anyway. The review can be better though.

Agree that without Ebay Plus, shipping kills it, but note no free shipping AFAIK at Mwave either.

I actually bought both sg105 and sg108 from the previous deal. If you're after a smaller switch the 105 is tiny and the 108 is about half the size of this one. I thought they were comparable and bought a mix but this Linksys switch is going to take too much room for some of my uses so I'm very glad I didn't just buy it and forego the Tenda.

Buying 2 sg105 instead of 1 sg108 is a bad idea as you'll need twice as many power sockets and an extra network cable to get the same functionality out of the 2 sg105 as 1 sg108. Also running 2 power bricks makes it more expensive to use.

      • also, I purchased linksys 5 port unmanned switch from umart online, only cost $9 and pick up in sydney hurstville. its much cheaper than this deal.

        • It sure is if you only need 5 ports. The sg105 cost half of what the sg108 cost as you noted above. Not everyone lives close to cheaper computer retailers. I still think what I've posted is a good deal. I can't find this model cheaper anywhere else for those who have Ebay Plus (and plenty here got it for a year for a dollar), and it use to retail for USD80 when new.

But if you find a deal that's better for you on something different go for it. That's what this place is all about. I'm not affiliated with any of these retailers or manufacturers.

Goes well with my Linksys Router

  • Poster of this deal on the same product did not cop anywhere near as much grief 15 months ago when it was $29.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/397433

That deal states it was down from $99. And it looks like orders were not fulfilled. OP still didn't cop grief or get told he'd "over-hyped" the deal.

    • More upvotes = more trolls?

This post gets more positive votes right?

OP, the issue most people have is that TomsHardware review.

The other deal's OP just posted the deal and did not give a damn.

Once you posted a link to a review, obviously some people will look at it. The review did point out it has a smaller buffer size than the competition. So, Linksys did cut the corner a little bit on this. Honestly, that is something we don't want to see on a 8 port switch. The latency result isn't surprising (it is Realtek after all). Really wished more efforts were put into the review. Anyone who is serious about switch performance obviously wouldn't get this, but this deal is mainly about price, right?

Sorry, but performance issues need to be pointed out first. The LED features are less important (they are nice to have, but they don't make the switch runs faster). Just because the switch indicates a port is operating in gigabit Ethernet mode, it doesn't mean you will get max speed out of it. At the end of the day, you still need to do performance testing. Sometimes it is lousy NAS not pumping data fast enough, sometimes it is compatibility issue.

There was nothing freaking wrong with the review. There are thousands of reviews with less detail. Asking for more detail on a review of a cheap router is absoluetely ridiculous and OTHER OZBARGAINERS STATED THAT THEY FOUND IT USEFUL.

What freaking performance issues. There is no indication this switch has any performance issues whatsoever. Insisting that only perfect, detailed, highly technical reviews that tick every box are attached to deal posts is BEYOND RIDICULOUS. Show me where I can find such reviews for the Tenda products that recently got listed, or the D-Link devices mentioned on this thread.

If you don't like the review, don't bother with it. If you don't want to take up the deal, no worries, move on.

        Goddamn you people are whingers!!!
