    I don't mind really.

Things cost what they cost. Auspost’s hands are tied because of the CSO.

    • That's interesting. If, as the article claims, China has to pay $1 to Australia Post per item, I wonder how eBay sellers still manage to sell $1.10 items. There must be some other loophole that brings it down a lot further.

I can’t recall where I read it but I read that the Chinese Government subsidies postage cost.

    Not happy Jan.

I also think you are not happy.

  • Talk about not getting it.

They need to reduce prices and increase service quality if they are to stand a chance. That applies to letters AND parcels. And make sure that stamps are a thing of the past.

When was the last time you posted a letter?

    • Today (ebay sale)

In broad terms "Letters" refers to any mail item less than 20mm in thickness, not just written correspondence.
On a daily basis we send 20-30 "letter" items which contain small craft items.

      • It used to be defined that way, but earlier this year I was told "letter" only applies to printed stuff, anything other goods have to be sent as a parcel.

It seems to be an international change of definition, in the past it was very cheap for example to send small items from Germany to Australia, by classifying them as letters. Not possible any more. :-(

I know, many eBay sellers still use prepaid envelopes to send small items through the letter system, but it appears Australia Post is clamping down on that, one of those items wasn't delivered and instead carded that I had to pay extra to get it…

        • As stated, we use the "letter" service for all of our items under 20mm in thickness. Never heard of the "letter" only applying to printed matter and indeed, we lodge our items at our local PO with no issues

          • @Ocker: Maybe the lady I dealt with at my post office made that up on the fly, I can't actually find it in writing anywhere. Shame on her! But good to know it is still possible :-)

      • To be considered a letter, your item must:
        weigh less than 500g
contain flexible items only (if being sent within Australia)
        have a rectangular shape
        be no larger than a B4 envelope (260mm x 360mm x 20mm)
        be no thicker than 20mm

        However, results can vary.

If sending something solid, I enclose it with brochures. Also within a Post Office I (now) know who is a stickler and who isn't.

There is big jump from a couple of dollars for post and small parcel delivery.

  • I'm going to stick my neck out and say that people who respond to this either A) Wont care as it doesnt directly affect them or B) Say they arent happy.
Not sure the point of the question though as you're not going to get any happy people from this, (unless they are at the top of the Auspost chain)…

  • CEO has to eat you know

    • Postie need to eat too, they used to deliver bills, now they on emails.

We keep hearing how much they are losing on the letter service, but we dont hear how much they are robbing us blind with their overpriced parcel business and their non existent express post and tracking service, and yet they can still afford to pay ceos millions.

If you haven’t see the movie “The Postman” it is about a nameless drifter dons a postman's uniform and bag of mail as he begins a quest to inspire hope to the survivors living in post-apocalyptic…

    Who knew?

  • An increase of 10% (remembering the last increase in 2016 was a 42.8% increase) while delivery times for letters outside of one's own city have generelly lengthened. Prices up, service down - not happy here either.

    • Sounds like exactly what they did with banking services. Raise prices to "encourage" customers to use electronic banking/ATM's rather than counter service. Then they shut down the counter service because they say that people are not using the service as much any more.

  • I post a lot of things (selling things on ebay - not a business as such though).

It's 10 cents… I honestly wouldn't even notice the difference. If 10c per item is going to ruin you/make things worse then I feel like you have bigger issues to worry about.

  • Anyone know if $1 stamps can still be used immediately after 2/1/20 to send small letters? Will auspost chase up the shortfall?

I ordered a fairly expensive item from Amazon. I rang & told them in NO WAY do I want the AU Post to touch that package. They sent it by courier.

Order handled by courier: placed order at 3pm on a Tuesday, got it at 2pm on the following day— from east coast to WA.

Order handled by AU Post: ordered an item from a shop in Perth, 80kms from me. See notation that AU Post has scanned the item.

    It arrives 5 days later!

This is one example of many. Literally ANYTHING they touch goes into a black hole and then suddenly shows up, days later.

  • I think inflation is starting to take hold. This is just one sign of many

  • i still have 70c stamps

  • I thought they were more than that so you should be happy they haven't risen earlier. Mind you I haven't sent snail mail for years though so not the best judge.

  • probably going to take forever to get my Weetbix cricket bat and woollies Google nest mini and chromecast…
