Telstra will be Turning Off 3G in 2024

I know this is ages away, however..

Telstra will be switching off 3G in 2024.
Although in 2024, who would still be using it.. and any current tech would be getting old by then anyway..

Site Blurb..
After switch off, you will not be able to access the Telstra Mobile Network to make or receive voice calls,

While this is still a while away, we’re making the announcement now so our customers have plenty of time to change to newer devices if they have a 3G only device, or a 4G device that doesn’t have 4G voice calling (HD Calling) capability.

We launched 3G in 2005 and it was cutting edge technology at the time. We now offer our customers extensive 4G coverage which provides vastly better data speeds and improved customer experience for streaming sport and entertainment and using graphics and video rich social media platforms. We have now also launched the next generation of mobile technology 5G which will bring advancements in mobile gaming, virtual reality experiences, HD video conferencing and other applications not yet even contemplated.

As customers increasingly move from 3G to take up the benefits of newer technology we will be repurposing the 850MHz spectrum, currently used to provide 3G coverage, to support our 5G rollout. This will let us grow and improve our delivery of next generation 5G technology.

and any current tech would be getting old by then anyway..

Not really, there was large fleets of 2G devices still on the network when they had been shutdown. All low data/low usage things had been on 2G, everything from car GPS trackers to lift emergency phones, to water meters, to gate openers, to monitoring devices and some smart meters to name a few. Plus a million candy bar/flip phones still in use.

So while the general public might not have been using 2G heavily, the 2G network was used. The 3G network is going to be no different, as most of that above was just upgraded to 3G, some was upgraded to 3G/4G devices.

Its funny as most of the world still has 2G running for these devices, But Australia is dead set on killing it all off.

Australia isn't dead set on killing 2G. We are dead set on refarming spectrum to the most efficient use. And 4G makes much more efficient use of the spectrum than the earlier technologies. It is annoying that low usage devices get left behind. But unfortunately the spectrum they occupy is difficult to justify with the increasing demand for data.

      • Australia isn't dead set on killing 2G. We are dead set on refarming spectrum

Strange that much larger overseas population cities have enough spectrum to run 2G/3G/4G and shortly 5G, but little old empty OZ can't run more than 2 of them at once it seems?

Telstra turned off 2G to save money in power and maintenance costs more than anything (remember 2G coverage was everywhere so a big saving), they also sold the turn off as part of the reuse of the spectrum. But now they need to turn 3G off for 5G? Smells like more cost savings.

Maybe they could just buy some more spectrum space ;)

Most countries have either already switched off 2g or have plans to switch off their 2g network soon. source: https://www.emnify.com/blog/global-2g-phase-out

@richadam: Lot of them turned off now appear to be CDMA (ours went decades ago too), and most of the 2G networks that are scheduled to be turned off when our 3G is being turned off aka mid 2020's.

Unfortunately spectrum space is like waterfront real estate - its all being used! You have to take it from someone.
Who would you buy it from? The trains? The planes? The military?

  • Yes, totally agree,
my initial thought was, 'what about all those 2 sim 4g/3g phones', or watches. I didnt even think about half the stuff you mentioned.

  • Oh wow I was about to buy a 3G-only GPS tracker for my car. Lucky I saw this haha.

Yeah I'd hate to only get 5 years out of a piece of tech haha

wtf? i mean they just switched down the 2g network!

    • they just switched down the 2g network!

That was in 2016 there switching off 3G in 2024 they also didn’t “just” switch off 2G they did it almost 4 years ago.

My understanding is for 3G to close all 4G phones must be running VOLTE.
I would be surprised if that could be put in place by 2024.
I would think the current number of 4G phones running VOLTE is a small
    percentage.

  • Most manufacturers are already moving their products to be at least 4G capable of VOLTE (at least for mobiles).
The popular manufacturers from the popular China brands (ZTE, Huawei, Oppo, etc) to the more premium (Samsung, Apple, Google) have various international markets that they serve.

I see no issue with mobiles made within the last two years (most have 4G, some like Samsung had VOLTE support since 2017).
Having seen 5G in action in the USA the amount of repeaters needed to provide adequate coverage is straight up bonkers. Due to the spectrum limitation it can't penetrate buildings and without clear line of sight you tend to flick between 4G and 5G consistently.
