Here are the instructions for those who missed it.

For those wondering on how the process works, these steps below detail the porting process from a carrier to Amaysim. An optional $2 sim from the shops can be used to speed up the process.

If you're an existing Amaysim customer and want to take advantage of this, it requires porting out of (and abandoning) Amaysim to another carrier, like Telstra, then back into Amaysim. The purpose of this process is be considered as a new customer, all while retaining your phone number. I recommend porting to Telstra, since their process is fairly quick and painless. Their Sim cards are also free from their website, which I recommending stockpiling a few to keep them handy. If you're not an existing Amaysim customer, skip this step.

Purchase that Groupon code and find a referral code (click on this link for a referral code from a random OzBargainer). This will give both the referrer and referee $10 credit each. Once that link is clicked on, select the relevant plan (1GB, 5GB, etc.) and continue.

Sign up to a new Amaysim account. To be safe, use a new email address. The rest (name, address, payment method) can be the same.

During checkout, select previous provider and phone number, and at the end, apply the Groupon Code in the "Promo Code" box. This will bring the plan to $0, since this was already purchased on Groupon.

Enter a payment method, which is usually a credit card. But don't worry, this can be removed later. Then, submit and complete the order.

Go on Live Chat and request the plan to be activated on a $2 Amaysim sim instead. This is used to speed up the process and avoid the default 5-day mail delivery of a Sim. When prompted, provide them with the Sim card number and make sure the porting occurs with the $2 Sim. I believe there’s a way of also activating via a link in your account, but I haven’t tried this. If you are happy to wait however, skip this step.

While the porting is in progress, which usually takes a few hours, log into the newly-made account and change the payment method to BPay. This is found somewhere in the settings page (location of that differs between devices). With Amaysim's payment system, a valid payment method is required for the plan to auto-renewal every 28-days/month/billing cycle (despite the whole thing costing $0), hence the use of BPay as a placeholder.

Wait for an email to confirm the number has ported over and we're done.

      you are awesome.

    • Since I used my existing Amaysim account (which I opened when I was with Amaysim more than a year back) to buy this plan, my PayPal was already there as a default payment option so it didn't ask me for it.

    • +1

The first point of these instructions should be that if you are an existing amaysim customer make sure you have a new $2 Amaysim sim BEFORE you start the port process. Otherwise you will be up to 5 days without a phone. Telstra send out their free sims quick - Amaysim are slow.

      • Just a little confused as to what existing amaysim customer means here. I was an amaysim customer for a month, half a year ago. Am now with voda, do i need to get a new amaysim sim as well, use a new email, etc.?

        Thanks

        • Just use a different email to be safe.

          • @Miyagi: Thanks! I know them i port in and out of voda, they do know i have had past accounts with them, by looking at the mobile number / matching personal details. This won't be the case with amaysim?

  • +1

    Bought.

  • +1

    thanks bought one

  • How long it takes to leave amaysim and come back to regard as a 'new' customer?

    • +4

Port number out then port back in if you want to use the same number. Use a different email to be a new customer. You can use the same email and add a plus something or a period which counts as a new email. E.g. [email protected] -> [email protected] or [email protected]

      • So I've an account with Amaysim as I used them more than a year back. I can still login using my email id though I am not their current customer, of course. Will I still need to create a new account using a new email address? I assume I shouldn't need to.

        • You can try and sign up with your existing account but the promo code might not be accepted at the payment screen. No harm in trying though and if this does not work then you can always just create a new account with a new email address.

    • +3

There is no waiting period to be a new customer for Amaysim. So you can just port out and then straight back in again with a new email address and you be a new customer. All other details can remain the same.

    Thanks OP.

If I knew Amaysim would mess up the porting of my mobile number I would never have gone with them. Avoid them if you care about your number. It's been 48 hours now that my Optus SIM has been deactivated and my callers are getting the error message that "this line is disconnected". I have called them 3 times now. Every single time they first claim it's normal and it takes 1-3 business days and then they admit my SIM card should work within few minutes of the old SIM card getting deactivated.

    Be warned, stay away.

    • On the line with them right now, again they are saying it takes 1-3 business days "after my previous SIM card deactivates" for them to activate my Amaysim SIM card. So do it if you don't care if your callers get "this number is disconnected" for few days.

I did some Googling on this recently and found the ACCC website which states https://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/mobile-number-portabil…

"Strict time limits have been agreed and set by industry for the completion of a port. The Australian Communications Industry Forum (ACIF) Code on MNP C570 sets out these time limits. In the absence of technical difficulties, porting a single number should take no more than a few hours. This sets a new international best practice standard for porting.

"With the introduction of MNP, the ACCC will be strongly enforcing consumer protection provisions under the Trade Practices Act 1974. The ACCC shall closely monitor any complaints alleging unconscionable conduct, misleading or deceptive conduct and/or false or misleading representations. The ACCC has put all carriers on notice that it will be thoroughly investigating all consumer complaints".

Nice one! I am going to bring it up with them now.

      • +3

I heard that this is Optus' issue when porting to another Optus provider. I have seen this happen to me over the years. I normally try and go from an Optus to Voda/Telstra provider first as this is quicker.

        • +1

This makes porting very difficult and not worth the time.

          • @alx88: Yep. Even the Amaysim website makes mention that Optus to Optus takes 3 business days compared to 1 day for Voda/Telstra to optus.

          • @alx88: Incorrect. It is a very easy process.

You can get a fee sim from the Telstra website here: https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/prepaid-mobiles/2-p…. Then wait 1-2 days for it to arrive. You then port to Telstra (do not recharge your service so pay nothing to Telstra). As soon as you are with Telstra you can then port straight to Amaysim. This has all been detailed above in the first (pinned) comment.

    • I have never had a problem porting in or out of Amaysim and I have done this many many times.

Your service with Optus should not have been disconnected until it was active with Amaysim.

Part of your problem is that you were transferring from Optus to Amaysim and it always takes much longer to transfer between providers on the same network for some unknown reason. It is best to only transfer between providers on different networks. You should have transferred to Telstra first (with a free SIM that you can order from their website) and then to Amaysim. This does not take long to do.

But in saying all that, I have read here on Ozbargain that on rare occasions the porting process between providers (not just Amaysim) can go wrong and people have experienced long delays and even lost their phone numbers. So there is always a risk of it going wrong and this is something you need to be aware of when porting in or out of any provider.

All amaysim plans are powered by Optus 4G Plus network

    Lost me at (Fl)optus.

  • sorry for the dumb question, so this is going to cost me $7.96 for 6months?(discount in checkout)

    also does the data rollover??

    • 1) No, its 6 x 28 days, technically you miss out on 2 or 3 days each month
      2) NO

    • sorry for the dumb question, so this is going to cost me $7.96 for 6months?(discount in checkout)

Yes. $7.96 covers the entire 6 months, which equates to $1.33 per month.

      also does the data rollover??

      Nope, no rollover.

    • Agree with 'sillycow' above. It's 6 x 28 days, which doesn't amount to 6 months. More like 5.5 months. Also definitely no data rollover.

  • How do you port out? with which free service provider and then back in?

    • +1

Port out with Telstra. Their sim cards can be ordered for free online, or can be purchased for $2 at any shop if you're lacking time.

  • Do we need to let them know to not renew after 28 days x 6? As we're not adding any credit card details in the account, I assume they wouldn't be able to renew anyway.

Second question, for how long will the number remain active (to be able to port out to another carrier) once 28 days x 6 period is over?

    • Do we need to let them know to not renew after 28 days x 6?

Nope. Just sign up with the Groupon code and the rest is taken care of.

As we're not adding any credit card details in the account, I assume they wouldn't be able to renew anyway.

A payment method must be added for it to renew every 28 days/ billing cycle. Otherwise, the whole plan can go kaput. It won't charge you anyways, since the plan has been paid via Groupon.

    • +1

You will need to keep track of when the 6 x 28 days service is nearly completed. In the 6th (last) 28 day period you will need to turn off the auto-renew setting in your account or else you will be automatically charged (and have to pay) for the next 28 day period.

      • Gotcha. Can I not stop auto-renew right away as soon as I activate my SIM? Ideally since I've paid for 6x28 days period, it will still work for that time anyway. No?

        • +5

No. You will need to stop the auto-renew in the 6th 28 day period. If you do it as soon as you activate the SIM then you will only get 28 days of service with the deal and you will not get the full 6 x 28 days service deal. This is a way for Amaysim to catch out people and charge them for an ongoing service after the voucher deal ends.

          • +1

@Rodo: Thanks, mate. I will put a note in calendar. :)

            • @virhlpool: This is not entirely true, see the 1st (pinned) comment by silverrat. You can change the payment method to bpay once your account is set up.
This effectively stops any further charges.

Also I can confirm this works as I have set up an account a few months ago.

              • @Arthur Dunger: Great. When you chose BPay as an option, do you give account details as well? If yes, can't they deduct it from the account after 6 x 28 days?

                • +1

@virhlpool: No, there are no details required.

                  • @Arthur Dunger: Awesome. It means I can change payment option to BPay as soon as my SIM is active and then don't have to bother about auto-renewal after 6x28 days. One more question - so that I can port my number into some other carrier, maximum how much gap (# of days) is allowed between when Amaysim 6x28 days are over and I find another carrier?

                    • +1

@virhlpool: I couldn't say exactly, but it's a long time. Best to ask Amaysim if it's a number you care about. I don't want to give you the wrong information.

  • I already have an online account with Amaysim even though last I used Amaysim plan was before more than a year back. I can still use this account to order/ activate new sim without any issues. Right?

  • is this like 6 starter packs or 6 recharge vouchers?

    • 6 recharge vouchers. As long you have a payment method attached by the end of the billing cycle, it will automatically renew with 1GB of data (in this case). There is no need to touch the account at all.

  • How do you get the sim card?

    • Amaysim will mail these out to you. If you want to save time, buy a $2 sim from any shop (that sells sim cards).

      • Didn't ask for address when purchased

        • Not for Groupon, no. When you purchase the plan on Amaysim’s website itself (with the Groupon code), it’ll ask you for your address.

  • these always have short activation dates for some reason.

i'm not ready to port out yet so i'll wait for the next one or the one after.

  • I wonder if this will come down to $5.

  • thanks for the post. got one for myself.

  • I just noticed something really odd in my first Amaysim deal.

    manage plan
Promotion - Free UNLIMITED 1GB. Valid to: 11 Apr 2020

However, since it should reset after a few days, if I only get the sim roughly say 6 days later it will only be able to recharge 5 times.

    Currently it's in line with:
    16 dec
    13 jan
    10 feb
    9 mar
    6 april

Suppose I activate it by calling in 6 days time and it resets, which apparently it is supposed to? (hopefully the sim actually comes to me within 5 days instead.)

    22 dec
    19 jan
    16 feb
    15 mar
    12 april (not eligible)

Thus it seems it might actually be only for 5 months if you activate slowly. I kind of slept on the voucher for a while too because my kogan hasn't expired.

I'm fairly new to this new method of juggling an extra data sim for my dual sim phone.

Does the promotion period change depending on when you activate?

Hmm. I just figured out why it adds an extra 5 days, that's because that is apparently how long it takes for the sim to be delivered. *sigh (sleeping on kogan plan doesn't seem to be an issue I think)

Still uncertain whether the activation reset affects the promo expiry period.

    • If you activate the SIM by the date specified in the Groupon voucher then you will get the full 6 x 28 days of service. This is what is stated in the voucher you bought from Groupon and as long as you abide by the terms and conditions on the voucher then they have to give you 6 x 28 days of service.

      • So, the bar at the top changes then?

        https://i.imgur.com/lcCmjTw.png

I saw in the other thread someone got billed for a month where was supposed to be free. *shrug

They did end up giving them amaysim credit, but that basically only makes it so you pay $5 a month extra and locks you in for an extra month. lol.

        • +1

I am unsure whether the date will change but I assume it should. You should contact Amaysim about this now and also about resetting the activation date. From my understanding, Amaysim only gives you 10 days to re-activate the SIM from the initial activation date (I always recommend that you verify your details only just prior to when you want to use the SIM as this stops the SIM arriving to you pre-activated).

If the SIM is activated by the date mentioned in the Groupon voucher (which I understand is before 9th December for this one) then Amaysim have an obligation to provide you with the service as stated in the voucher. If Amaysim do not, then you should contact the TIO (and not just accept credit as compensation as what the other person received).

  • Perfect thanks.

  • which account do you need for this recharge form the amaysim site
Cant see where you can just get a sim card

  • Well that was not a particularly fun process - I am an existing Amaysim customer on this exact plan for $10 p/m.

Got a free Telstra sim. Ordered yesterday, arrived today. Went online to activate with Telstra. They say they will send an email. Email then says they have an error and to go on live chat to activate. Go on live chat have to give all the details again. Get told will get a txt. Get a text saying there was an error and I have to call.

Call some random who hardly speaks english - explain the issue. They get my name and DOB wrong about 5 times. During the call I start getting texts sent to my old number 😂. Then I get a text saying it has ported. So a good waste of about 30 mins.

Have to get an Amaysim sim so who know how long that will take.

  • code still working. just ordered.
