New Laptop (16 GB) suggestions for daily usage

I am looking for a new Windows laptop (not a big fan of Apple) for a daily usage of browsing, watching movies etc. I am not a very heavy games user. Specifications I am looking at is something like below so that it can work for me for next 4-5 years without issue.

— 16 GB RAM
— Better battery life
— Intel i7 processor
— 15.6 inch screen
— SSD + HD combination

Although, I am not looking for a gaming laptop, the moment I put a filter of 16 GB RAM, it goes into gaming range. As better battery life and performance is more important for me, I just don't want to overkill it with gaming laptop and not using the high power features while compromising on battery.

I want to complete my research and be ready before Black Friday / Christmas deals so that I can take advantage of them during deals days.

Any suggestions under 1200 ?

  • Any suggestions ?

    Yes, telling us your budget

    • under 1200 ?

      • What type of graphics performance?

        • Not very high. Rarely I will use a video editing software. If I am not going to use it that much, would it be advisable to have a dedicated graphic card or built in ? If I understand it correctly, dedicated card would impact battery performance.

          • @ChessLover51: Video editing is possible with the Intel Iris iGPU (integrated), but it is a lesson in patience.

A decent upgrade is the AMD integrated solution, like the Vega-12 APU's. And these sound like what you require.

However, if neither options are available, it might be wise to get one with a dGPU. Something like an RX560 or GTX 1050 which won't use much power but should provide a decent graphics boost. However, there is a price difference between laptops that have a dGPU compared to iGPU laptops.

    • Did not know about this site previously. Thanks for pointing. Any prior experience with this site / reviews ? Any other such central site for refurbished devices ?

      • I don't look at anything which has condition rating below excellent. I bought 2 laptops from this site already.
Dell Factory Outlet is pretty good too.

  • I would have a look on Gumtree, in particular the Dell Latitude series.

    • 👍 Dell Latitudes are pretty reliable, and I've worked with a number of laptop brands.

  • if you are looking for a general usage laptop then why are you looking for 16GB RAM? 8GB would suffice.

  • Does it need to be new? I can imagine these lower end laptops being sold much cheaper secondhand.
You might save money by buying one with a lower amount of RAM and just upgrading it yourself.
Upgrading RAM depends on the model of laptop, but it can be as simple as basically changing a AAA battery.

  • Many 15.6" laptop deals on this site involve laptops with only a single 8GB stick of RAM. You can easily purchase 8GB RAM sticks for cheap (less than $45) to bring these laptops up to the 16GB you are looking for.

Even the most non-tech-savvy person should be able to easily add a ram stick to a computer if they watch a video on how to do it, so maybe keep an eye out for 8GB RAM laptop deals as well (all you need to do is to confirm they have upgradable RAM).

  • Thanks everyone for suggestions. Seems like going with 8 GB RAM and later upgrade myself is preferred way to grab a better deal. Also, refurbished one should not be ignored. Should I go for individual brand's sites to look for refurbished or there are any reliable sites which do it for all the brands?

  • Go and have a look over at Dell’s outlet. I had a quick look and found this which is a Dell latitude with i7, 16gb ram, 500gb ssd and 3 year warranty for $1200. Only downside is no graphics card
I have bought a Dell refurb machine (Latitude) in the past and was impressed.
