Scrap value of heat pump hot water system

I have Rheem heat pump hot water system and I have it scheduled to be replaced within a week.

My question is, can I sell it to scrap metal company?
Has anyone in Western Sydney sold their hot water system to scrap metal company?

Any suggestions of company name would help.
Thanks

What did the scrap metal companies tell you when you contacted them?

I tried tw in blacktown who said that they can take but minimum weight needs to be 3tonne !

Oi. You are not supposed to show that much initiative before posting a question. Instead, you must await the incoming 'They told me to post on Ozbargain'.

Let us have our cheap giggles.

      • why dont you sell it to someone who collects scrap waste to sell on once they reach 3 tonne, or just become that guy that collects 3 tonne of scrap waste

As a scrapper, it isn't worth buying.

I've never scrapped out a heat pump but if it's like a normal HWS there's not a lot of value in it. Even the copper tank storage HWS only have 2kg (at most) of thin #2 copper in them.

    7c per kilo

Not worth anyones time to pick that up off you, there is minimal copper scrap in the unit! you would be lucky to get $20 for it………..Hence I couldn't see anyone going out of their way to pick it up. If the system was a Saxon, it would contain a lot of copper and scrap value would be between $60-$110 depending on the size of the system.

    • Lol have you scrapped them before? My neighbour does it. The big HW 250-300l tank ones are about $5 scrap value after you take the brass off…

  • Unless you break up the unit into its metal groups etc, its worth $20-80/tonne (aka 1000kgs) at best as mixed metal.

But as you have found out, most places are not interested in your 50kg hot water service.

Put it out on the nature strip, someone might pick it up.

  • You'd have to break it down in copper and aluminium and even if you value your time at $10/hour not worth it.

Could try putting it on the lawn as others have suggested and if no takers, take it to the local resource centre which takes metal (usually it is a free drop off).

  • Put it on gumtree, someone could probably fix it.

  • Place I use doesn't give anything for hot water systems.

If you spend the time to tear it apart you would get something for any brass or copper recovered. Last time I checked (about a month ago) it was $2/kg for low grade copper and $4/kg for brass.

Go to Sims Metal in Milperra or ST. Marys (I use Alexandria so i'm not sure what they are like).

As a whole unit it is Light Iron (shred steel) and you'll get 9c/kg +-1c/kg (prices change daily). So probably $1.50 - $2

If you micro-scrap it you'll get $7.30 for clean copper; less (can't remember the price - around $6) for any copper with solder on it; $2.35/kg for any bare insulated copper wire; 90c/kg if you leave the brass terminals on it; $4/kg for brass fittings. So probably $5-$6.

Scrapping one item is rarely worth it. The money comes from scrapping daily (like I do), knowing what to microscrap and stockpiling until you have several kg of material.

My scrap run last week was $238. That was a good one.

    • What about air-conditioning unit?

        Indoor unit is
        $1-2 as-is

        or
        50c copper wire
$1.50 electric motors (usually sealed in resin so you can't micro-scrap).
        20c of brass
$4.00 copper/ally radiator. You can scrap them down further but it takes a while.
        A wheely bin of plastic

        Outdoor Unit
        $5 as-is

        50c copper wire
        30c brass
        10c alloy
$1.50 electric motor but you can microscrap it to $3
$10.00 copper/ally radiator (you have to cut the end loops and the steel reinforcement off)
        $7 in clean copper tube
        $2 in #2 copper
        20c of steel
I'm not sure if the compressor is 7c shred or 67c electric motors. I've scrapped 2 or 3 units for the copper and it's a filthy job as they are full of oil. I have 2 in the workshop at the moment and I keep finding better things to do. One weighs 40kg

        • Thank you for detailed information. Looks like I will let the plumber to take away whole unit.

          • @SydBoy: I collect it to stop me getting bored on the walk home from the train station. I scrap because I enjoy it I don't like it going into landfill. A lot of my processing I do while "watching" TV.

            It's all about quantity.

            My last scrap run was
5kg each of bare bright cu wire, burnt cu wire and clean cu tube
27kg of low grade insulated wire
            19kg aluminium extrusion
            39kg of lead acid batteries
75kg heavy melt steel (it was 50% shred steel but I've given them a lot of heavy melt at shred prices previously)

  • Thank you everyone. I let plumber to take away whole unit.

What surprise me that system costed me $3000 is worth nothing in scrape value even though all parts and components are still there.

    • It must be big if it was $3k. My 2.5hp Daikin was $1650.

I was told that a $40k car has about $2k in raw materials in it. The rest is value ad in terms of technology, engineering, assembly labour, robots, etc. I'm not sure how accurate that is but you/me are at the bottom of the totem pole when it comes to scrap value.

    • Some of us here in Adelaide get them for free.

    • Hi Sydboy

I have Rheem heat pump hot water system and I have it scheduled to be replaced within a week.

Are you replacing it cos it's old or because heat-pumps are no good?
I was thinking of changing to a heat pump set-up from a standard electric h/w tank, do you know what the labour portion is for installation of your tank?

      PM if you prefer.

      • My current heat pump is working but it is 10 years old. Last break down was 6 month ago so decided to buy one when eBay 10% sale came through.

I have load 2 electricity so my hot water bill is around $150 per year between 3-5 people using hot water all year around. I am not sure whether it is load 2 electricity or heat pump technology responsible for lower bill but heat pump is worth if you can afford it.

Cost of heat pump depends upon company you use but mine is Rheem. Installation between $500 to $700 depending upon how many new valve you need for system.

  • Ive heard of people cutting them to make home made smokers. Might be able to get a couple of bucks off Gumtree?
