My elderly dad has a cheap android phone (can't remember which one) but he is having trouble viewing the crappy screen especially outdoors. I'd like to get him a new phone with a better quality screen but he doesn't need the features that come with a higher end phone such as better CPU, memory, camera etc. Any recommendations?
Cheap phone with decent screen

I picked up the A20 recently. Decent size screen and larger battery. Fits the bill @ $150 mark for your Dad.
$150 where?

expired, but it should come up again if youre patient.
otherwise $180 here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/493678I'll pass this info on my old man as well. Shame it's locked to Telstra/Voda. Will look to compare prices on unlocked versions of this phone. Cheers
@Donatello: Officeworks has the unlocked version for $249
The Galaxy A series are cheap and they have AMOLED displays. I also got the A20 for my old man and found the display pretty good, even though it's not full HD.
Sounds like the A20 is the winner. Can't find an unlocked one for less than $249 though. I've got my dad using Aldimobile
I got mine for $215 from TobyDeals (used to be called eGlobal Digital). Buying locally is actually cheaper — but most of them are locked to Optus, Voda or Telstra. You can apparently unlock the phone yourself for a small cost
You can also buy the Xiaomi Mi a3. Costs roughly $212 shipped and like the Samsung it has an AMOLED display and a big 4000mah battery, and it's also more powerful as well.
The downside is the in-screen fingerprint sensor, which most people would say is lousy.
I checked out the A20 and I didn't realise it was as big as my S10! Screen is beautiful though but I think it will be too big for my dad.
Any recommendations in the 5" or smaller range?
Isn't bigger screen better for old people? A20 isn't even big compare to today standard
It's hard to convince him to take it around with him half the time. A bigger device will be even less likely to be taken.
I understand why Samsung quarterly sales have fallen 8 % the first quarter of this year .
There phone are not user friendly and will sales will continue on that path .
OP whatever you do don't buy that brand .
What part isn't user friendly? I recently bought my uncle the Galaxy A20, he is in his 70's and doesn't have a problem with it. The repeat notification sound is great too if he misses a call or sms.
Also it's ranked 3rd on the Best Budget Smartphone (Under $300) in 2019 poll, which is pretty amazing considering it was only added on 26th June. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/444162
I think the samsung A-series is basically this. Like the A20, A30 etc. They've popped up for $150 recently.
They seem to be the usual basic phones, but samsung threw some nice screens into them. First time I saw one (maybe the A30) I thought it kinda looked like paper, because it was clear without being super bright like the sun.
