what's the best value option for an electric bike?
DIY? China? Local?

If your budget is strict, go second-hand. I got a Tirol recently for $275 on Gumtree (though they don't come often at that price).

Less than $900 I’d go second hand quality unit. Be prepared for a new battery.

DIY is OK, but might end up with problems. Cheap Chinese is OK, but any warranty issues will be a pain and the quality is lower, so expect problems.

I have bought a few cheap and cheerful e-bikes and fixed them, but it’s not for the faint hearted. Got one I’m still struggling with. Bought 3 others with flat batteries and replaced the battery off eBay and all good, but, I sold them on so have no idea how the e-bay batteries last.
