Replacement for Hyundai Tucson tail light plastic cover

I noticed my car's plastic cover on the taillight is broken (cracked). I contacted the dealer for fixing it and they say I have to replace the whole taillight and it will cost ~$1200.

Is there any cheaper alternative?

It might be better if I can just buy the cover, else cheaper/used taillight assembly will also work. Any auto repair center/store contact info will be super helpful.

  • Has it been damaged or is it a stress defect? If a defect and still under warranty, ask for warranty replacement.

If not warranty, you can't just buy the cover, they are an assembly. Price one up from the parts department at the dealership and fit yourself, this might avoid some of the service department's massive markup. Otherwise, source from a wrecker.

    • Damaged :). I think either I hit something while turning or someone hit my lights while backing (Not a scratch anywhere on the vehicle, so hard to know). Since I am new here, do you have any suggestion for wreckers in Sydney?

  • Replacing the taillight assembly should be a 10min job. $1200? They’re having a laugh.

Without knowing what model and only a 30sec search , google shopping results show between $90 and $160 for a tail light.

    • Tucson Highlander 2019. I tried a googling but did not find ones for my model. The price is not for labour but sourcing a genuine TailLight from Hyundai.

  • Is it smashed or just cracked? Imo just seal it off with silicon if you can, then look into one from a wrecker.

    • 2 cracks from top to bottom. I was thinking of using "Tape" until I find the replacement. Thanks for the suggestion. Did you mean silicon sealant or glue?

Sealant just to keep the water out.

  • Very hard to know without a year model

    • Tucson 2019 Highlander (Petrol)

Ah, probably going to be very expensive as I'm pretty sure it's a completely sealed led unit. You won't be able to buy the lens. A wrecker would be your best bet, if they don't have it they can often find who would.

Wrecker and see if you can buy a second hand one. Then get on YouTube and see if there is a video showing how to replace it. They are usually not that hard to replace.

And the dealer will have quoted supply and fitting costs. Full bore retail prices are always a bit steep.

    • I am new here in Sydney and owning the vehicle :). Do you have suggestions on where I can buy the second hand ones? I should be able to figure out how to install it myself. My vehicle is Tucson Highlander 2019 (Petrol).

Just jump on Google and type in "Hyundai Wrecker *your_suburb*" and it will come up.

Also get on eBay and search for anyone selling parts for a 2019 Tucson. If they are parting one out, you can send them a message and ask if they have a tail light for sale.

And is it a "2019MY" Tucson, or a "2018MY", as I know there was a body/facelift change around this time.

Also, If you got a quote to repair it, did they give you the Hyundai Part number? That may also help your searches online.

Edit: Here are some part numbers I pulled up, but without your VIN, they could be the wrong model. But at least you can search Google and see if they look the same. (Or at least compare them to the part numbers you got from Hyundai.)

        92403D7100 - LH Tailgate
        92404D7100 - RH Tailgate

        92401D7100 - LH Outside
        92402D7100 - RH Outside

And here is a guy on eBay (priced at around $200) breaking down a Tuscon that might be the same as yours. Worth giving them a message to find out.

        • Thanks @peagxs. The model and year on ebay is different but I will try to contact him if he has the parts for my vehicle.

I will also try to go through the wreckers and see if they have any.
