Where can I get decent fishing equipment from for a reasonable price? I very rarely go fishing maybe one or twice a year and I am an amateur. I am going to Mildura and hiring a houseboat, so I thought I could go fishing there,any advice for cheap and good fishing gear.

Go to K-mart, BUT don't buy any Jarvis Bay gear, all crap.
Get a shimano rod for 30$ (Saw one in K-mart this weekend) and a real from Shimano (around 30$) should do the trick.
If there is already line on the reel, ok, otherwise go into a fishing shop and get Platyl-100. Expensive (15$) but worth it.
And If you are really serious about catching something, get an adequate Fluoro-Carbon leader (around 8$).
If you see a combo from shimano, you could go for that.
To see if a rod is good, make a flick/whip movement. if the tip wobbles for a while, dont buy it, and try another.
As for the bait, get some small hooks (size 10 or 12) and put some bread on it. This should get you yellowtails or Mullets.
Filet or cut in stripes, and they make excellent bait. With a bit of luck you might even get Slimy mackerel. Best bait.
