Competitions normally give people extra entries when someone else uses their referral code.
So, before clicking on the main link to the competition, check to see if people are doing referral links in the comments.
By telling other people which referral link has been used, then offering your own referral link, it's a fair system to ensure everyone gets extra entries into competitions :)
