Pihole - Block YouTube Ads

The ad discussion thread reminded me about this. Does anyone know how to block YouTube ads on pihole? I tried the way described on a Reddit thread and it didn't work.

    Try blocking "googleads.g.doubleclick.net"
Haven't used PiHole in ages but blocking that at router level works for me

    • This is blocked on my pihole and it doesn’t stop YouTube ads. It may stop the overlay clickable ads, but not the between video or in the middle of the video ads.

  • I can't get them to be blocked either.

Ack when I first setup my pihole, it worked. There was no ads at all. Even Spotify didn’t have ads. Now both have ads. So, the must have rerouted the ads to be tagged in from their main video URL and blocking that would block the videos you wanted to watch.

And I think something similar has happened with iOS in the last update. Every one of my “free to play” games and aps on my iPad were ad free. Now, even with the pihole running, every one of them has the annoying ads back. I keep seeing references to Apples own DNS servers. So I think they are using a method to bypass your pihole to allow developers to insert ads regardless of your DNS settings…

You can't block youtube ads as they serve ads from the youtube.com domain. Companies are smartening up to these tricks. So you either block all the ads and the content or try to block some some will filter through. The recommended method is to use Ublock Origin alongside PiHole to give you the best chance at no youtube ads.

If you use an Android device try 'Youtube Vanced' it is a youtube app that blocks ads as well.

    • I think this is the part I don't understand. I have unlock and adblockpro on the PC and get no YouTube ads. But I can't seem to accomplish the same thing with pihole? Just want the YouTube ads gone from tv apps

PiHole doesn't have the functionality of doing what those can do. It is just a domain blocker. Those apps would have a bit more smarts about them and be able to block the containers that would load on the page. You need to use both in conjunction for the best user experience.

I have the same problem when casting to my TV. I seem to get ad's on my tv as well. I am not sure if there is a way around it. You can look into Regex blocking that may work in some cases but I think it will always be a case of always chasing your tail and keeping blocklists and regex filters updated as I don't think it will be a set & forget scenario.

      • This is both a bit of a guide and overview, and they managed to get it block Youtube ads on their smart TV https://youtu.be/KBXTnrD_Zs4
Any rules in this video you don't have?
