I did, and then checked facebook and gumtree for the models i liked. I got a casio CTK3500 https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/casio-ctk3500-keyboard that sits in the corner but it did what i wanted.
$300 will get your uncle something awesome. I know there are even ones that light up the keys when your learning songs.

Keyboard or digital piano? I've got a Yamaha Piaggero NP-12 which is their cheapest electric piano (only 61 non-weighted keys) but sounds good. Costs around $250 new.
