Boost Vs ALDImobile Vs Telstra in Terms of Coverage

Hey!
I noticed that both Boost Mobile and Aldi Mobile are using Telstra's network.
on both sites there is a difference in language.
Boost
"With Boost you’ll get 3G and 4G coverage on the Telstra Mobile Network."
Aldi
"ALDImobile uses part of Telstra’s 4G and 3G mobile network"

Is there a practical difference in terms of coverage if one uses Boost or Aldi instead of buying a plan directly from Telstra?

I understand that Boost has an identical coverage as Telstra. Aldi is slightly less, mainly in regional areas.

Unless you travel alot to the regional areas, you prob can't tell a difference.

That may not be 100% true, but don't know where I read it, and don't know if it was or is still true.

Some remote mining sites have Telstra coverage and you MUST be connected direct with Telstra to get coverage in those locations.
(obviously this is going to have minimal impact to the vast majority of people)

Otherwise, Boost has full Telstra Coverage, wheras ALDI and other Telstra Wholesale resellers have coverage that is intended to be similar to Optus/Vodafone.

Have been with boost for years. Working at remote mining site. Have had full coverage and always have had on Boost.

Had ALDI years ago and didn't have coverage in Maningrida but then went with a Boost simcard and had full coverage

        • Can't beat real world experience!
It may have been a misinterpretation by whoever said it back in the day.

        • Yes agreed. Spent a night at Mount Surprise with zero coverage with Aldi.
Now on boost and have coverage.

  • I live on the Gold Coast and was on the Optus network for years….. coverage got worse and worse. Switched to Aldi over a year ago and have had no issues and great coverage……no problems noticed when driving to Melbourne either.

  • I've been with Aldi and now Boost. I live metro so can't tell the difference. When I did travel in country NSW - Tamworth, Gloucester etc I didn't notice the difference either.

One difference I've discovered recently between Boost and Telstra is that Telstra supports VoLTE/VoWiFi better then Boost. I tried to get Boost customer support to activate VoLTE/VoWiFi on my handset (moto G6+) but was told they do not have the same access as Telstra. I was basically told to move to Telstra

I'm currently on Boost and can confirm I have VoLTE and VoWiFi. I didn't do anything special, it was activated by default. iPhone 7 Plus.

      • Ditto.

      • OK it seems the Boost customer service person didn't know what they were talking about.

    • Telstra supports VoLTE/VoWiFi better then Boost

define "better"? works in more places (?)

    • I can confirm VoLTE is working on my S10 HK variant (SM-G9730) with Boost. APN are also telstra ones.

    • just out of interest, why would you want to use VoLTE?
i understand why a network provider wants you to use it, just confused why end users want to use it.

Boost has same coverage as Telstra. Aldi has less coverage.

    https://whatphone.com.au/compare/boost-mobile-vs-aldi-mobile

They use the different networks :
Boost Mobile uses the full Telstra Mobile Network. If you choose a SIM from Boost, you’ll get access to what’s called the ‘Telstra Retail’ network. That’s telco insider talk for the fact that Boose Mobile are the only phone company, other than Telstra themselves, who have access to the full Telstra network – all 2.4m square Kilometers of it. ALDImobile use the Telstra Mobile Network. It sounds like the same thing, but it’s not. The Telstra Mobile Network coverage footprint is not as broad as the full Telstra ‘Retail’ network. Boost is fully owned by Telstra which explains the different treatment. ALDImobile get a subset of the full Telstra (retail) national footprint. Specifically, ALDImobile get population coverage 98.50%
. Compare the network ALDImobile have then with their number 1 rival and the number of people and square kilometers which are covered are very similar.

  • You answered your own question…..

"With Boost you’ll get 3G and 4G coverage on ALL the Telstra Mobile Network."

"ALDImobile uses part of Telstra’s 4G and 3G mobile network"

    • As i understand some rural areas ALDI don't cover (eg Normanton), not just mining communities, and ALDI don’t get the higher speeds of 4GX.

As I spend a lot of time in these communities I can tell you it’s Telstra or nothing. I am taking Mrs Entropy on a gulf trip next year so we will find out the diff as she is on ALDI.

      • As i understand some rural areas ALDI don't cover

Thats correct, thats why they claim PART of telstra network, not ALL of Telstra network. Look at the wholesale maps and you'll see massive gaps in the country for the wholesale network.

ALDI don’t get the higher speeds of 4GX.

        Correct

As I spend a lot of time in these communities I can tell you it’s Telstra or nothing

yes/no, Boost or Telstra, Boost uses ALL of Telstra network (aka not the wholesale network), so basically has Telstra coverage at 1/4 of the costs. You even get VoLTE and wifi calling on boost.

  • I was talking with someone about this the other day. This site has a coverage map with a slider that shows the difference between Telstra's retail coverage (Telstra and Boost) and their wholesale coverage (Woolowrths, Aldi, AussieBroadband etc). Coverage seems very similar close to the coast, but in regional areas it's quite different. The only limitation that Boost has is that they don't get access to full 4GX speeds that telstra customers get.

    https://www.whistleout.com.au/MobilePhones/Guides/Telstra-ne…

    • if your phone doesn't support band 28, 4GX doesn't really matters.

    • You don't even have to look at the coverage maps, just the claimed percentage population.
Telstra Wholesale Population coverage is around the same as Optus' claim… That's not a coincidence. It's a product designed to compete with Optus (and Voda) without chewing into Telstra's Premium profits too much.

      Telstra 99.4%
      Telstra Wholesale 98.8%
      Optus 98.5%
      Vodafone 96%

Optus and Voda percentages also courtesy Whistleout
      https://www.whistleout.com.au/MobilePhones/Guides/Telstra-mo…

      • Well a lot of people would need to look at the maps. Many people look to move to telstra wholesale carriers from their full telstra accounts to save money. If they're in a regional area it's quite possible they'll have full telstra retail coverage, but zero telstra wholesale coverage unless they go with boost. So for a lot of potential customers the map comparison is very important.

  • How does Belong coverage compare ?

    • +1

Belong sell Telstra Wholesale, just like ALDI

  • +1

I work on a remote minesite and have noticed absolutely no issues with boost. I also drive between sites and don't seem to have any difference in reception as my work phone which is on Telstra

  • Why would you ask about 3 providers but not include all options in the poll? Weren't you really asking whether boost has better coverage than aldi?

    • Indeed, Telstra has better coverage than Aldi, but the same coverage as Boost (given that Boost is a plain label Telstra prepaid service).

      See clauses 2.5 and 3.6(a) in https://www.telstra.com.au/content/dam/tcom/personal/consume…

    • Assumed that telstra has best coverage

      • yeah so poll you'd expect would result in 100% Telstra. But if poll was "which is close? Aldi, Boost, Both or Neither", it could possibly have been useful.
