What Would Be The Most OzBargain Car Aka Absolutely Best Fuel Economy and Cost to Maintain over 15 Years

Thinking about getting a car soon since work would benefit greatly from it even though for a long time I told myself if I can't walk there I can't have it which was a good willpower discipline for when you want to go buy stuff but for work it is the opposite mindset in that I need to get to it every time or that is money down the drain and time wasted also energy wasted having to find a new job etc.

So I am looking for an ozbargain certified car.

I am not a car expert at all less of an expert say than in tech.

But what I do know is most of the cost is in fuel, maintenance and replacing parts and maybe extras like proximity sensors and reverse camera.

I am aiming for under 5L/100km fuel economy or better.

Under $4000 or what you guys recommend because I honestly am lost when it comes to car prices.

If possible suggestions on adding proximity sensors and cameras either third-party aftermarket or otherwise.

Don't need dash cam yet honestly I would only do it for hilarity to post road rage to YouTube.

I am pretty good at other stuff but I may get a dash cam down the road but having ridden in cars with proximity sensors and reverse and forward parking cameras they seem really good but no idea on the cost but have seen some around here in deals on ozbargain.

I guess I will be mainly using it for work which could range from 20km to 35km one way depending on the site location so double that for return trip home daily.

Don't want anything big or hard to maneuver but would like something with a bit of boot space for simple groceries and maybe transporting some cleaning/gardening/working equipment but honestly that is not so important as any standard hatch, coupe or small sedan should have enough for my need as remember I am upgrading from basically no car so this will all be a major life changing upgrade for me honestly can't wait I am so excited :)

Budget is honestly something that will last me 10 to 15 years so not something that might break down in 2 to 3 years aka a $300 on its last legs dirtbox but also not something that would cost me more than I can imagine a luxury holiday for 20 people might cost.

I wouldn't realistically consider anything more than $12,000 looking at half of that as my ball park area have been offered a few cars in the $2,500 area but have not been able to inspect them I think it was a c180 Mercedes Benz so yeah that doesn't sound like good fuel economy and he is probably trying to sell me a lemon.

So with all that in mind

Under $4000 or what you guys recommend because I honestly am lost when it comes to car prices.

For under $4k to last 15 years and be fuel efficient, I recommend a mirage. Not a Mitsubishi Mirage but an actual mirage of a car.

    • -1

Is that like a fake marriage or day dreaming about your crush kind of thing.

      • +2

Day dreaming about a $4k car that would last 15 years makes day dreaming about requited love sound like gainful employment.

        • -3

Ok now you are throwing too many big words here I am not understanding so I am going to take that as disrespect now are you my ozbargainer be my ozbargainer

          • +1

@AlienC: A mirage is an illusion typically referring to one made out of water vapours evaporating from dessert sand.

My reference to a mirage implies the object, in this case a car, to be imaginary.

Requited love is the one where it is reciprocated.

Gainful employment is one where everyone benefits from said employment.

PS. Kerfuffle mentioned unicorn. That is a mythical creature typically based of the image of a horse and a spiralling horn emerging from the forehead. Mythical means it is not real.

            • -1

@[Deactivated]: So I should be aiming for the opposite of gainful employment aka nobody benefits from said employment alright got it duly noted for next time.

              eye roll

              • +1

                @AlienC: Or…

You could spend a bit more for a car and expect a bit less hence bringing expectation and possibility closer to parity.

                • @[Deactivated]: Okay tshow it is ok you don't have to keep participate you have helped enough obviously not up to the challenge.

In future just say not sure instead of giving up so the next person can try.

                  • +1

@AlienC: I am sure. So are all the other comments below. They're unanimous.

  • +1

    I agree with the tsho.
Under 5L/100km would have to be a hybrid or a diesel car, which is already more expensive than petrol cars, and you definitely ain't getting one that will last a long fifteen year for under 4k.

    • Well the correct answer would be then something along those lines if it really is not available or the next best option which is standard in hardware recommendations not complete stonewalling.

  • Hahahaha good luck. You're looking for a unicorn here …

Also, wall of text again …

    • -6

Thanks as always great input not even reading between the lines but that is typical kerfuffle answer good to know you can't be relied upon ever.

  • Whatever car the company gives you.

    • That is one option.

  • You need to lower your expectations or spend significantly more. How much do you earn a year?

    • I am on casual for now so not a fixed amount yet.

But potential for a permanent position in a few months then yeah I would be able to give you a rough estimate a rough idea.

  • A Suzuki Mighty Boy πŸ€”

Wow these answers are great I knew this would go well.

    • +2

      You're getting valuable advise. Singular.

Your budget and expectation are outside the realms of realistic.

      • Yeah the alternative advise on what I should aim for instead is really great in this thread so far I have been told to go for.. oh wait nothing.

      • Then provide some good options what part of the entire thread are you not getting.

Just saying sorry no can do isn't really helpful.

Well then what is can do?

Or am I missing something here or do i need to post the question again.

I feel like I am speaking another language here.

  • -5

Looks like I will have to rewrite this under a new name to get the responses I needed because this failed.

Was hoping you guys would have better answers but the helpful smarter ozbargainer's aren't online atm it seems which sucks because I need this question answered.

  • +1

A Tesla plugged into neighbours electricity

  • +2

I wouldn't realistically consider anything more than $12,000 looking at half of that as my ball park area

    Why?

If you want a POS which will cost money to maintain, spend $4-6k. If you want a decent car which could last a while, spend $12k.

Hell a new Swift or similar runabout will set you back maybe $17k and have zero issues, just service it. Or a 3yo Corolla for around $15k.

  • Get a hybrid.

Better yet, don’t get a car and either buy a good pair of shoes or a Xiaomi electric scooter.

    • Looking at all of my options.

Got some new shoes but definitely need a vehicle.

Might go for a scooter if it is able to do grocery runs in and is a lot cheaper than a car because a car means I can transport multiple people.

  • -2

First somewhat on topic answer so far albeit a bit heated.

    Keep the ball rolling.

So aiming for under $10k is not a good idea?

    • +2

      under $10k

Pick a number, pick a budget.

      First $4k, then half of $12k ($6k), then $10k.

This from the person who wanted to work out how much each toilet flush cost…

Begs the question as to what your actual cash budget is

      • +1

Don't think he's budgeted for insurance either …

        • I'm just doing this step by step.

Like I said nfi about cars here but yeah thanks for making this whole process easy on me thanks.

      • -4

I JUST WANT A CAR TO GET TO WOR AND MAYBE TRANSPORT PEOPLE.

I DONT WANT TO OVERSPEND AND BUY THE 85" OLED TV EQUIVALENT.

THERE ARE SO MANY CARS THAT I FEEL LIKE PEOPLE DON'T ACTUALLY KNOW HOW TO PICK THE BEST VALUE CAR.

I AM NOT INTERESTED OR TIED TO ANY BRAND MODEL OR AESTHETIC JUST FUNCTIONALITY.

THERE IS NO REAL "BUDGET" JUST CHEAP AND WILL LAST ME THE LONGEST TIME.

I SWEAR OZBARGAIN STILL DOES REALLY BAD AT THESE QUESTIONS LIKE MAYBE WHIRLPOOL OR REDDIT IS BETTER WHICH IS KIND OF SAD AND DEPRESSING REALLY.

Someone asks what pc they need to play fortnite on the go at 1080p settings medium to high settings do you then ask their budget or recommend them the cheapest or decent laptop in a decent price range.

Anyways it is a rhetorical question I already know you guys are useless.. Was just hoping there was another user worth their salt on this website now guess not.

Feel kind of bad because I expected more from everyone who posted in here but I guess no atm can step up to the plate.

No scrimshaws or mskeggs to be found anywhere here just the bottom of the barrel comment trolls and rubbish feeders.

        • +2

Someone asks what pc they need to play fortnite on the go at 1080p settings medium to high settings do you then ask their budget

Yes, yes we do, to work out what we're really suggesting.

If you have $15k to spend, I'll recommend you the best car for $15k. If you only have $4k, well it aint gonna last 15 years unless you're very lucky.

What can you really afford? Or don't you really know? Haven't you worked that out yet? Surely you know if you can afford $4k, or $12k… I mean, that's a big difference in cash!

An expensive car could be $10k to someone, $30k to someone else, $80k to another, and $500k to another. It's subjective. Which is why we need to know your actual, cash budget.

But hey, feel free to go onto WP or Reddit and go "recommend me a car!" with no other details, and see how your responses go. I'd suggest about the same as here.

          • -1

@spackbace: WHAT IS THE CHEAPEST CAR TO GET TO WORK RELIABLY FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME.

            BEST PRICE TO PERFORMANCE RATIO.

DONT NEED TO PAY FOR IT TO LOOK FANCY I JUST WANT TO GET TO WORK AND MAYBE CARRY GROCERIES.

FIT INTO TIGHT PARKING SPACES AS BEST AS POSSIBLE WHICH MEANS NO LONG SEDANS.

I DO NOT KNOW MUCH ABOUT CARS.

JUST GIVE ME ANYA RECOMMENDATIONS TO DO THE ABOVE.

WHAT WOULD I BE PAYING FOR IN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A 6K CAR AND A 15K CAR THAT IS WHAT I WANT TO KNOW.

I WANT A CAR FOR A DECENT AMOUNT OF YEARS NOW TAKE THE TOTAL COST OF OPERATING AND RUNNING THE CAR NOW ADD THE INITIAL COST AND DIVIDE BY EXPECTED AMOUNT OF USABLE YEARS NOW WHICH CAR IS THE LOWEST.. RECOMMEND ME THAT CAR BECAUSE I DO NOT KNOW.

IF YOU CANNOT ANSWER THIS IT IS OK WE ALL HAVE OUR GAPS AND ARE NOT ALL EXPERTS IN EVERY FIELD SO EITHER THROW IN THE TOWEL OR QUIETLY BACK OUT.

Yep, the fact I'm a car salesman makes me really unable to assist you.

WHAT IS THE CHEAPEST CAR TO GET TO WORK RELIABLY FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME.

A brand new Swift, around $17k, will last a very long period of time. As will a new Corolla, $28k ($30k for hybrid), very long time.

DONT NEED TO PAY FOR IT TO LOOK FANCY I JUST WANT TO GET TO WORK AND MAYBE CARRY GROCERIES.

FIT INTO TIGHT PARKING SPACES AS BEST AS POSSIBLE WHICH MEANS NO LONG SEDANS.

Have you considered getting a donkey?

WHAT WOULD I BE PAYING FOR IN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A 6K CAR AND A 15K CAR THAT IS WHAT I WANT TO KNOW.

              Exactly $9k, that's the difference

                • @AlienC:

Maybe start out with that you know in case my crystal ball isn't working

I don't really need to state it every time, by asking a simple "what's your budget" I'd expect an actual answer to the question, not someone going on the attack and having a mental breakdown just because I asked a simple question.

So you reckon $17k is the lowest I should be aiming for there really isn't anything cheaper I am open to used cars given that it is a smart avenue.

If you can't afford it, we can suggest something which might be suitable. But again, no point trying to help you if you can't actually afford it. It's not rocket science. If it offends you well tough, it's a question that needs to be asked.

  • A bike!

    I've got nfi about cars.

  • Actually, despite what everyone says there is a solution. If you get a car with LPG fitted, it will run on less than the cost equivalent of 5L/100km. LPG is 60c a litre atm due to world oversupply.

You can find many Commodore and Fords that have them fitted, can be had for $3000, and they can be cheap to run BUT only if you know how to do a few things. If you have to pay a mechanic to swap the water pump, fix the radiator etc the money starts adding up, and that will happen as things need replacing fairly regularly.

    • Realistically I will probably not be able to do much of my own repairs and maintenance on the car.

It honestly depends on a few factors but that is why I am trying to aim for the most foolproof solution as possible until I get used to owning and maintaining a car.

If you are a huge car expert then any recommendations on what route I should take for this use case would be helpful otherwise thanks for the help and advice so far I appreciate it.

      • Hmmm I'm afraid I'm not a huge car expert. I only know a few things. But I remember how it was to look at a car engine and seeing nothing but a confusing mess of components. And then, slowly, by tackling problems one at a time, I managed to build up a working knowledgebase, and now I look at a car and see the individual parts. Just like a computer is made up of components: cpu, ram, motherboard, hard drive.
Once you looked at the inside of a computer and saw nothing but a confusing mess too, but then you learned. Bit by bit. That's how it happens, and there are many resources available if you want to learn.

Now, part of the problem your facing comes from how your approaching the task. You've got your heart set on extreme fuel efficiency.
Can I ask why thats important to you?

  • Here you go no idea on the reliability of any of these cars but they meet 2 of your requirement fuel and initial cost.carsales

  • Holden Barina TK 2008 model $3000.00 to 2011 model $7000.00. Have not got a clue about reliability.

    • Good prices really good definitely below above recommendation of $17000.00

Ok adding them to a list.

    • Have not got a clue about reliability.

I could chime in, as could some of the more mechanical proficient people on here, but I think OP has dug himself too deep of a hole.

      • I know but honestly it is hard to find something cheap an reliable. Manual or auto OP?

        • Automatic for now.

I am just checking my options for now before I am forced spend more.

As I have regretted some purchase decisions before when I realised later that there was better options out there.

For example I see many people spending too on pc builds and laptops when if I was able to suggest a good alternative they could have maybe saved loads of money and gotten even better specs.

Some users can do that and have that ability while some like (best not to name) don't know how to provide good answers and even mislead other users for whatever cause or reason.

          • @AlienC: Ok have a look at older Toyota vehicles, maybe corolla and Camry on carsales.com.au. That might be a start. Also older Suzuki swifts on carsales. Both Toyota and Suzuki are cheaper on parts etc and if you find one that hasn't been flogged may give you several years driving. Steer clear of euro cars.
