Need help with a PayPal transaction

Hi fellow ozbargainers.
I would like to purchase some games I found on gumtree but the guy lives in another state(NSW). He says he is happy to “express post with no extra cost”. He is also ok with me paying using PayPal.

I’m a bit newbie about using PayPal, would it cover me invade of a scam?

Thanks in advance for your wisdom :)

would it cover me invade of a scam?

    Nope.

PayPal Buyer Protection does not apply to payments made through Gumtree.

Every private seller isn't necessarily a scammer.

Common sense can be used to assess if a person is genuine or not.

So what is your common sense telling you about this one?

        • +3

I'm not doing the transaction or dealing with the seller.

It is up to OP to use their own common sense.

For example, I bought a rare 1970's book from a private seller for $20. It was common sense that if the seller was a scammer then they would have listed an item that is more likely to be in heavy demand (so they would attract potential marks more quickly). The seller seemed genuine from their email communications. And finally, even if I didn't get the book, then was OK with the potential risk of losing $20 versus the potential gain from getting my desired rare item.

  • Cash and local collection for Gumtree. You pay paypal and you wont see your games or your money again.

I've bought from a number of sellers online before with gumtree through paypal, haven't had any problems at all, usually when they do free express shippings its because they get free labels from work or something and just use that.

But its up to you, I usually check how long they've had an account on gumtree for, if they're selling any other items, if they talk nicely, if I can reverse image search the pictures to see if its taken from online and I weigh up the risk if I lost all my money and got no games whether I'd be okay or not.

As others said paypal won't cover you at all, and theres definitely scammers on gumtree, or people who see an opportunity like this and realise they could just dash, so you have to assess your own risk.

I have bought and sold lots of stuff on gumtree and paid/been paid with PayPal and haven't had an issue.

You need to suss it out, check the users profile (it has length of time being a member and prior sales and maybe reviews). You can call the person and confirm and again suss them out.

If you are asking to pay with PayPal and have it shipped where the sellers ad says pick up then your usually not dealing with a scammer. If they demand PayPal and are selling something way less that everywhere else AVOID !

I believe if you pay with paypal and not use the family and friends option you can always dispute with the credit card company if paypal don't help you if something should go wrong.

  • You can use paypal but pay using a credit card, credit card charge backs are substantially more likely to work

  • PayPal won't cover you if it is a scam or if the package doesn't arrive.

But since you're in another state, how else do you propose to pay for the items? Bank deposit, cash in the mail, credit card over the phone, cash on delivery? You want the items, the seller is offering a way to pay for them. So if you want them pay for them in the manner he has requested. If he scams you, too bad - you should have bought the items from a retail store or in person.

  • Unless you want to read the T&Cs of PayPal and do your own research (not just waiting for answers but actually googling) , walk away.

  • There is s reason it's call scamtree. Imho cash on pickup is the only 'safe' option to buy anything on scamtree. It is preferable to avoid scamtree completely.

  • Thanks guys.
I thought PayPal was always on the buyer side but I seems it’s only on eBay?
I’ve decided to don’t do it

    Thanks again
