Sponsorship for a Charity Event

Hi

My company is pulling together a day where about > 100 people will be riding for Qhubeka. Qhubeka is a South African non profit charity which provides bicycle for people to use as a form of transportation.
We’re planning a bbq to give to the riders to have after they have completed their riding course. Riding course includes 60km & 100km.
Anyone know what’s a good approach to get some meat or drinks sponsored for these kind of event ?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

    Ask local merchants in person.

Recently tried to organise some meat/fruit for my kids kindergarten open day

        Oh no :(
I had another idea of getting Cadbury fundraising box and put it around the office.

Not a bad idea, could net you the $100 or so pretty quickly

Our manager did this and out of 60 bars, 45 had been taken and only $1 left in the box…

I hate that: putting the hard sell of friends, family and colleagues to pay extra for chocolate to support you in your good cause.

Cadbury should be providing the chocolates at cost at a maximum - preferably below cost to actually be contributing to these causes.

Cadbury maximising profits via charity events seems like the most unethical thing I can think of.
I would never use this for fundraising, but now that I've thought about it, I'm going to refuse to support in future, even when it's by boss putting the hard sell on employees… in fact I think I'll actively campaign against them.

    • Thanks. Was thinking of emailing some local butchers and see if they were willing to sponsor some sausages.

Is your company that tight it can't spare a couple of hundred dollars on drinks and sausages?

    24 pack of Coke @ Coles - $14
    Sausages $1 each

    • Haha.. funny that you mentioned that. They are expecting the support crew to fork out the cost of bbq for the riders… (chip in $20-50each or something)
Will try talking to some people in the company to sponsor us..

      • If the support crew pay for the drinks and sausages, will they also get naming rights as the charity sponsor?

If the company, as you say, is putting together the venture then why shouldn't they spring the cost of the BBQ. What sort of a lousy company is it?

    • My thoughts exactly… will try speaking to them again and see if they can do anything

  • Local charities/organisations/clubs etc can often get some support from the local Coles/Woolworths for doing a fundraiser, but being an actual company as opposed to an organisation it might be a bit more difficult.

    • Thanks for letting me know!

Does Sydney really need more bicycles? The streets are littered with share bicycles.

    • It’s not for Sydney. It’s a fundraiser, raising money for Qhubeka to purchase bicycles for people in South Africa to use as a mode of transport. Currently some part of South Africa, the only mode of transportation available is by walking.

Retailers you approach are going to ask themselves, "What's in it for them?"
Try local butchers and offer their name/logo on advertising… We get asked almost every couple of weeks for a donation… And we'll generally steer towards charities that we know have supporters that support us in turn…
We recently received a blanket email looking for sponsorship for a kindergarten that I thought was spam… Apparently not, it came from someone two hours away… Aside from not being a demographic we actively pursue (kindergarten kids aren't big wine drinkers), they were two hours away, with an entire wine region between us and them, donating to them made no sense.

Stick to local retailers that you frequent (ie: your favourite butcher or IGA/Drake's) where you know the proprietor and pitch to them.

    • Try asking the local car dealerships.

    • Thanks for tip!

  • Ask amazon for the drinks. Worst they can say is no.

    • Worth a try! Will consider this. Thanks
