Recommendations: Free MMORPGs that are not pay to win

With the end of HSC coming, I was thinking of getting back into games. But being an essentially broke and will incur $50K + debt from uni, I was wondering if you OzBargainers have any MMORPG games to recommend (kinda want to experience some).

Things that I used to play include the Need For Speed franchise, Dirt Rally, COD Modern Warfare.

Open to new games and genres to try tho.

Currently, the games that have caught my attention are:

-Maplestory 2
-War Thunder

  • Tree of Savior (if you like Ragnarok Online)

    • Hmm. I will have a look at it

    MMORPGs… to win

You can never win. Sorry to break it to you.

    • Damn. That was a quick truth bomb… Hahaha

  • I know you're a broke student, but you're going to sink potentially hundreds of hours into this game. Is it worth putting up with a potentially worse game that constantly thrusts ads in your face just to save $15/month?

    • Hmm. Honestly I really don't know. Mostly the consideration is hardware limitations. I would love to play new Forza Horizon games and Need for Speed but I'm sure that my laptop isn't up to scratch for it. I might probably end up not playing at all and dive back into anime. hahaha

I think you should have more respect for your time. I used to play WoW even as a broke student, and that $15 fee amortised over a month = fractions of cents per hour of entertainment. Not knocking F2P games, but a subscription fee should be bottom of your considerations.

    Strongly recommend Warframe.

Platinum is purely optional and you can easily make it in the market.

    • Hmm. Looks interesting

  • Collect 150 cans from your neighbours bin once a month and get WoW or FFXIV.

  • World of Warcraft. I know it's not free and has a monthly sub on top but the value you get out of that game is phenomenal. Try the free starter pack and see for yourself (warning: it's highly addictive). So much content to explore, lore and storyline are pretty good, collectables to get, great progression, end-game raiding, strong guild communities and frequent content updates. Also runs on almost any machine regardless specs. It's really worth it.

  • I start playing Puzzle Pirates. They make money from aesthetic micro transactions. Fun game.
