Just paid my budget car insurance and got an email thanking me for being part of the small shop. Nice surprise!

    • Budget direct? I might see if I can prepay mine for next year in lots of $20 haha

      • +1

        Yep budget direct.

        • Sweet thanks for confirming. Although I can't see it listed in the online shops or on the map search, will give one $20 a go and see if I get it too.

    • how did you get to pay for insurance?

I thouhght it was small shop local only?

no insurance companies on the online section either

      • +1

Have no clue. I wouldn’t have thought it was included so was surprised when I got the email. Will let you know when the credit comes through.

        • +3

Can confirm I just received the credit. Came up as Budget Direct - Toowong

  • +1

Paul's Warehouse no longer on shop small list lol

  • Anyone know if Culture Kings online qualifies? Their B&M stores are on the list.

    • If anyone else is interested the answer to this is a big fat NO.

  • When does the $10 go into your account after you've spent the $20 at a Small Shop?

    • -4

      Your next statement usually.

      • +1

Not really, it should be at the same time when the transaction change from pending to posted.

        • Sorry you're right. I misread the question and made up my own.

      • +2

Its usuallly 2 to 3 busienss days

Be sure to ask the retailer if they take AMEX before you do your shopping. Last time, I walked in and even saw the AMEX logo on their terminal, but spent half an hour finding stuff to buy only to in the end be told they don't take AMEX anymore. And they were on AMEX's map too.

    • +2

This happened to me one year. I payed another way, kept the receipt and contacted AMEX. They credited $10 to my AMEX account even though I did not pay with AMEX.

      • +1

It happened to me as well last year but they didn't credit my account when I called them. I guess I was unlucky..

    • +2

I hate those kind of shops. If you don't want to accept AMEX then don't sign up for AMEX. Also, my understanding is AMEX lowered their merchant fees from ~2% to 1.5% which is lower than premium or international VISA & MC fees.
Same goes to shops which have a minimum spending for card transactions…

  • +3

Could not see any links/comments for confirmed go card transactions for Brisbane, so I am posting my experience here.

So far I've done 3 go card related transactions on 2 amex cards each in Brisbane CBD.

    • [4/112019 10am] Perry House News Elizabeth St cnr Albert St

Go card top up for $20. No surcharge. Got confirmation email immediately.

Somehow could not find the shop in the shop small map now, but definitely it was there before Monday.

    • [4/11/2019 12pm] Myer News and Gifts (shows as Nextra Mayer centre in transaction)

Bought 2 go cards together with top up for my friend. Spent $100 on each card. No surcharge. Got confirmation email immediately.
Guess go card top up only would also work.

    • [5/11/2019 5pm] Newsextra Casino News 131 George St.

Go card top up for $20. 3% surcharge. Paid $20.6.
Got confirmation email after half an hour.

Somehow could not find the shop in the shop small map now, but definitely it was there before Monday.

Champion, I am on the train on the way in about to try these 3 locations. You have just confirmed them all. I just hope they don't get upset with 7 cards.

I confirmed all these are on the shop small map last night around 10pm

      • +1

Just went into casino news and they only allowing one top up and no split. Claimed they lose money and pay Amex 1.5%. I told her no worries add it to the charge, oh no the 1.5% wouldn't cover it all. Ummm ok so why did you say it?

        • +1

Yeah that cranky old lady gave me a hard time last year as well. I would avoid that place at all costs.

          • +7

@VlVh: Well I want to make a point of it so I'll be going back 7 individual times to follow her rules and have one $20 top-up each time. So instead of me paying for the surcharge she can.

            • +2

@knobbs: haha I think I might do the same

            • @knobbs: Today marks my completion of my 7 visits to casino news. I hope they have enjoyed my companionship.

        • let me guess the asian woman?

        • +2

Take a subtle approach. The amex "surcharge" needs to be manually added by the operator. Therefore if they don't know, they won't add the surcharge.

        • +1

I'm going to the casino news now; bracing for some heated argument :)

    • 2 top ups at Myer News and Gifts but no email received to confirm Shop Small and no credit applied. The business is clearly listed on the map so this looks like a case of following up with Amex chat.

Another myki top up (unsure how to update list)
    Black Rock Newsagent and lotto

City Mart 614 George St Sydney top up opal no surcharge email received instantly for shop small purchase credit

    • Good find. Tried searching for City Mart on the Shop Small map and didn’t see it … pleasantly surprised to hear you got the e-mail

    • +1

I think if you have multiple cards the shop owner will say machine broken.

      • the old gentleman is quite nice if you are polite but if many cards may have to go on multiple occasions

        • +1

          +1

No problems doing multiple transactions. Got the old gentleman the first time, and his young assistant the second. Neither gave me any grief, very friendly service.

          • @McCynix: How come City Mart 614 George St is not shown on Opal retailer map nor Amex shopsmall map? could someone shop there confirm a $10 credit did actually come thru after the shop

            • +2

@shortgum: That's been puzzling me too. After henestto said it was part of Shop Small, I specifically searched for it but couldn't find it. Definitely qualifies, though - I've received the $10 credit. Normally, a no-surcharge store in the city would get smashed, but its absence from the map means they aren't sick of doing $20 Opal recharges yet. Guess we just changed that, lol

    • Thanks

    • Which shop are u guys referring to? Only one I can see in that area is an Allied Mart, opposite the cinemas?

      • Yup, that's the one. Signage says Allied Mart, Amex statement says City Mart 614

    • Just went there, however the Allied mart shop is in the building 614 George Street (couldn't find 614).
Unfortunately the guy in the shop once he noticed that I prepared my Amex credit card to pay told me immediately that Amex is not accepted.

      • +3

same experience today, however the other allied mart across the road(525 George st) accepted Amex with no surcharge and emails came through immediately.

        • Same experience with Allied mart on the 525 George Street - no surcharge and immediate confirmation email.

          • @vasya: I went to both 614 and 525 George St (Allied Marts) today - no surcharges and just tapped card.

      • went to both 614 and 525 George street, no surcharges or issues however I use apple pay to hide card type.

  • Nextra Top Ryde doesn’t appear to be participating this year, but Newspower Top Ryde is (it’s upstairs, near Coles). 80c surcharge, didn’t object to multiple cards, but tap and go didn’t work - physical card required. E-mail received immediately

    • +1

Gifts N News on the very bottom level of Top Ryde is definitely participating too, with no surcharge! I actually got charged two surcharges by Newspower ($1.01 all up)

      • Gifts N News only allows one Opal recharge per customer now. Still no surcharge

  • +1

Rhodes News top up opal no surcharge email received instantly for shop small purchase credit

    • No hassles doing multiple transactions, very pleasant and efficient

  • Is anyone getting instant alert to confirm the $10 credit after they spend?

    • Yes, via an e-mail last time I used it on Saturday

    • One of mine didn’t come through

    • One was received instantly. The other received 12 hours later. Both by email.

    • I didn't get notification emails for two purchases I made yesterday afternoon. I have been to the store already during this Shop Small period (using different Amex cards) and received shop small notification emails soon after, so I know they are a participating outlet. I will just keep a lookout on my Amex account for the credits. I have received notification emails for all other Shop Small purchases.

      • Their e-mail system seems a bit flaky. Did five transactions at one shop at the same time (I haven't used my cards there previously). Received only three e-mails, even though I've received e-mails for all five cards before.

        • I finally got my two expected notifications this morning, about 36 hours after transactions.

          • @tanoshiiki: Hmm I can see I saved the shop small in my app… and I see the small shops in their map. But haven't seen any $10 credited back yet… hmmm

          • +1

@tanoshiiki: Same here. It's not just the e-mails that are delayed - seems like if the e-mails are delayed, the credits are also delayed

          • @tanoshiiki: when i tap i get instant emails while it will be a few days if inserting and PIN

  • Opal top up at Darlinghurst, Fire Station News agency 179 Darlinghurst Rd Darlinghurst, 50 cents or 60 cents surcharge depends on who serving.

    • +1

Oxford Street news agency 50 cents

  • Weird.
One of my cards none of the notifications are coming through,

Ive triple checked and the offer is saved.

  • The Lucky Charm Galeries claim their PayPass isn't working this afternoon (40 cents surcharge and 50 cents surcharge over at the QVB outlet)

    • +1

Galeries ask for signature. Pavillion also not accept paypass

      • Galeries didn’t ask for signature, just PIN (it was a lady who served me)

        • +1

She didn't ask but the machine did not ask for pin and signature required

          • @SnoozeAndLose: Guess they need to replace their EFTPOS machine …

            • +1

@kerfuffle: It is the same as QVB and pavillion. Don't know why QVB one can pay pass and the rest need pin

    • Which one is galleries again? is that the one outside of townhall station at QVB side? Do they qualify for shop small? I am asking as last year i think they were not part of shop small as i did not credit back for them but worked fine for other 3 lucky charms so i just assumed that this branch did more than a small shop worth of business

      • +1

Galeries is the one near JB Hi-Fi …

        • sorry, I meant to ask which 1 is QVB 1? I have used Westfield, JB HI-FI and 580 George st one but I avoid the one next to townhall as I thought it is not part of shop small. Did you get an email/credit for QVB one?

          • +1

@FiDad: The one in Town Hall IS QVB and yes I got the e-mail.

            • +1

@kerfuffle: Perfect. You are a legend, will give them a try tomorrow morning.

    • 50c surcharge at Galeries yesterday, had to insert/pin card.

    • Used the Lucky charm on Friday with supp card surcharge 40c
Used this morning on my main card, although I apple paid and surcharge was 20c

  • No email received for opal with 40c charge at Lucky Charm in Pavilion in 580 George st HSBC building near W Cosmetics

    • I didn't get email from there either. But the $10 credit came through ok.

    • Just tried Lucky Charm Pavilion and they asked for ID so I couldn’t use my husbands card. Lucky Charm Galeries asked for signature and checked against card. lucky Charm QVB was an easy tap.

  • I spent about $15 at a participating retailer today for lunch. In hindsight I should have told em to charge me $20 and we'd both win. I'm gunna struggle to hit 5 uses on my 1 card this year.

    • Opal top-ups? I used some of mine at the following places today:
      - Ippudo
      - The Daily Edited
      - the Japanese beauty shop near Woolies Town Hall
      - and two lots of Opal top-ups from The Lucky Charm

Went to bottle shop today, saw a bottle for $42 at a small bottle shop, thought "perfect for two cards"

Take to register, the old guy says, oh this is on sale for $40!
"Sweet!, do you mind splitting into two, like $20 each?"
    "Yeah sure"
    First card $20 entered
Second card, "ok and $20 on the second card, swipe away"

    I check and he's put $19.99

"No no no can you please put 20?"
"So you want to tip me 20c?"
    "Yeah that will do"
"Im sorrry i cant add tips"
"Ok can you just cancel and put $20.00 exactly"
    "Ok sure!"
    The guys put $19.99 again!
"Can you please just put $20"
"Ive already put $20, have a look"

    Screen says 19.99

"Fine, let me buy something else"
I grab the mars bar on display right next to me
"Oh btw these expired last month, thats why theyre cheap at $1"
    "Yeah ill take one!"
"Its ok, you can have it for free!"
    "Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo"

So i grab 2 and he charges me an extra dollar for it!

I walk out like ive won a battle!:)

    • shop attendant obviously has no idea what u trying to achieve

      • +2

Yeah he wasnt trying to be difficult.
        He just had no idea.
I kind of dont tell them what im doing because i feel bad if they assume that i just come once a year during nov (which is true)

    • +11

haha maybe he did know and wanted to tease you

      • +1

that would be hilarious, he managed to keep a straight face the whole time

    • Got my cashback for this one too!!

Im pretty impressed, all cash backs receiced even though not all emails received

  • Just went to the emporium gift card concierge. They're having trouble with amex payments atm and said should be fixed in the next two days.

    • +2

I've bought a gift card at the Emporium concierge on 1/11 but didn't get the credit(or email). I've got credits for other shopsmall transactions.
They mentioned they've changed the system and their gift card is now an eftpos card. The transaction on my Amex account is showing as 'GIVV EMPORIUM MELB MELBOURNE' whereas the last year one was 'EMPORIUM MELBOURNE GIFT CARDS'. My guess is they've changed the card terminal provider and maybe that's why I didn't get the credit.

      • same here mate. i think you're right. maybe contact amex and see if they will credit anyway? let me know if you succeed

      • +1

Could you keep us in the loop whether AMEX agreed to credit you because of this terminal change.

        • I don't think I can contact Amex since the t&C says it excludes gift card purchases?

          • +1

@tyvod: What else does Emporium Gift Cards sell though?

        • Did anyone get the credit from Amex by purchasing gift cards from Emporium Gift Cards?

  • spent some dough at ippudo (WA) yesterday, I tend to get email notifications instantly, none came through so far. Getting concerned!
