Group Buy website

Hi, am working on a group buy website that does 2 things

  1. List products customers love for a nice bargain - each product is listed for short duration (1 or 2 weeks) and need minimum number of buys to get that price. Once we have the min needed customers, we ship the item within a day.
  2. Also have a polling section where customers can add products they would love and if enough people like those product, then we negotiate with the manufacturer and then list that product to be sold.

Does a site like this help you? Am happy to hear your suggestion/feedback.

yep but starting with oz market,

    • will u be interested to use it?

  • There was a group buy site in Aust several years back. It's where I got my first LCD monitor (Dell 24") and my Aeron chair. Can't recall what it was called, might've simply been groupbuy.

I'd give a new one a look at least.

    • thanks Apsilon. Since you have already used a similar one can you help me in passing comments and suggestions on improving the site am building. I already have the basic site in and loading testing currently. If you are interested pls let me know.

      • I could but this other one was probably near 15 years ago now so I don't remember much about it. It had a forum where people could suggest things, express their interest etc. TBH there wasn't much to it and after a few big successes it seemed to disappear from what I recall.

        • thanks. If your interested you can ping me privately

  • I think www.dtvforum.info had one…

Would Any People Be Interested in Group Buy Sites Where The Items Are Driven by Consumers Instead of The Seller?

I doubt you'd be able to ship next day when getting any decent discount…

This is the type of thing that works better within a specific community (i.e. motorbikes, car club, etc) as people are generally not happy to wait, change their mind, pull out etc. You'd have to be making enough to cope with consumer nonsense - and then it's not likely to be cheap enough to be worthwhile.

Look up the story of RoboGuy on here - he tried to be an importer, and got himself into a right mess!

    • thanks for the comment .i wanted to have a group buy site where we source it directly from manufacturers to the customers.

      • Then you'd be responsible for individual distribution, handling warranty claims, handling postage issues (including lost and "lost" items) - and you'd be asking for a significant discount on a product to make it better than buying it from a retailer, especially when you have to consider the money you'd need to take to cover the above.

Then you have to think if the manufacturer would even want to give you a discount… what motivation do they have to undercut retail chains, who will be buying much bigger volumes over a longer period of time?

I suspect you'll find it's one of those "good in theory, not in practice" type ideas.

        • sure valid ones. I spoke with few manufacturers and for a volume of 20 items i was getting around 30-50% discount. Yes we would be responsible for distribution but the warranty would be handled by the manufacturer

@[Deactivated]: ACL says you can't palm off warranty claims back to the manufacturer if the purchaser wants to deal with you.

            • @Daabido: oh k sure. thanks for that info.

  • Didn't someone run a website like this importing stuff from the US?

    • i tried finding something like that but couldnt find anything. There are sites that imports things from US but i wanted to have a group buy site where we source it directly from manufacturers to the customers.

  • the warranty would be handled by the manufacturer.

So the buyer sends the item back to you as the distributor/supplier and you will send the faulty item back to the manufacturer?

    • no directly to the manufacturer

  • I suggest you read up on Australian Consumer Law which states that the business/seller (which will be you) must offer either a refund or replacement if requested by the buyer.

It's not up to the buyer to have to send the faulty item back to the manufacturer.

    • sure will do. Thanks for that info. In that case yes, as a business will be handling the refund or replacement or warranty issues

  • Yeah, can't see this ending badly or anything…

    • thanks

If you don't know the basic principles of business, and the rules around warranty and returns, then you shouldn't even look to start a business, plain and simple.

If you're looking for some "get rich quick, work from home" setup, then this site is not for you. Buyers here are far more savvy to that and will eat you alive.

Today alone you've posted 3 totally different business ideas, which really reflect on you having nfi as to what you even want to do.

        Play to your own strengths.

        • sure. thanks for your advice. Am new to all these and learning things. Really appreciate for all the feedback i received. Will learn more into the ACL.

        • Hi, thanks for all your feedback today. Is there anyway you can help me out with the site am building for group buy? If your interested we can talk more on it. Really appreciate all your suggestions.

I’ve been in e-commerce for over a decade and involved in many companies both my own and others. Stop putting time into this until you learn basic business fundamentals and customer service.
