Apple TV Coming to Android TV?

So I was going to buy an apple tv 4k as its the only way to watch itunes 4k movies on TV.

However, it looks like the new Apple TV is expanding beyond iOS devices per the below press release.

It looks like Sony Android TV will eventually get the Apple tv app which, I think, means we can watch 4k iTunes content without need for Apple tv 4k.

Could it also come to Xbox one?

  • Could it also come to Xbox one?

I'd love to think "Yes", but that would also mean a huge reduction in the sale of Apple TV units and a potential increase in sale of the Microsoft owned Xbox — which would be a confusing move from Apple.

I would assume that those little Apple TV units are pure profit.

With the rise in smart tv accessibility I'd assume AppleTV sales would be suffering, this might be a way to keep the ecosystem they've built alive and keeping users locked into using their apps

    • +2

I think they make more money out of their subs and sales of content than a player. Makes more sense to increase availability across platforms to be better positioned for people to subscribe to apple+.

True, but they've already been heading in this direction for a while now. e.g. Apple Music has been available on Android for some time now (and now even supports Chromecast etc), and the Apple TV app (and Airplay support) has already been available on Samsung TVs since May, when the article OP linked was first released. An Xbox One app shouldn't be too far away.

  • The link seems to only suggest Airplay2 and Homekit support for Sony TVs. Apple TV availability is for Samsung 2019 sets, and they don't run Android.

  • You sure you dont mean their soon to be launched TV channel? Rather than their whole apple shebang?

  • Well its all about the Wall Street analysts,

according to this link there is a lot of positive vibes from Wall Street if Apple can expand their TV+ subscribers, therefore expanding the platform beyond iOS is seen as big positive.

  • I don't think the Apple TV+ app works the same as an Apple TV box?
At a recent holiday stay they had a Samsung TV with the Apple TV+ app but it doesn't have any extra apps like the Apple TV box and it's just a subscription service app

  • Pretty sure it’s just their streaming service app. Not iTunes stuff. But please correct me if I’m wrong.

Also if you do buy an Apple TV (or any Apple device) you get a years subscription free.

  • Apparently you can get iTunes movies on your Sony TV but only "some" Sony TV's
