They definitely have awesome sale prices on a regular basis, and normally only for non-current members.
The only time I have an Ultimate subscription is when I can tack on 3 months for a few bucks a month, or when they have 1 month for $1 etc.

Games with Gold isn’t a service in itself but a perk for having Xbox Live Gold, it refers specifically to the four free games subscribers get each month. Xbox Live Gold is subset of Ultimate (combined with GamePass), but it’s still available as it’s own service.

I remember previously (perhaps last year) JB were running similar deals with Xbox live but so were Xbox directly. Hoping they will do the same so I can use some Microsoft credit.

If you disable auto renewal (if you have it enabled) you should get the option to get an extra month for free when redeeming the code.

Basically a subscription service that adds around 100 games including all latest MS releases.
Think of it like Netflix. You get access to that catalog but you don't own it.
Should be able to see what games are on their and if you like any enough to pay for it.
It's good value if you want to play more than like 2 o this list.
As steelau stated Game Pass is more like Netflix with 100 odd titles available. Xbox Live Gold gives you four games a month.
The Xbox Live Gold games you can retain as long as you maintain the subscription, where like Netflix Game Pass titles will come and go for third party releases. MS published games should remain available.
Game Pass can include brand new releases day one, particularly those published by Microsoft. Titles made available with a Gold subscription will usually be a few years old, and half will be Xbox 360 releases.

I don't think it is a good time to invest in Game Pass Ultimate right now. Reason being that for the past 2 years, Microsoft had come up with some special deals for Christmas ($1 Game Pass and 1 $ XB Live Gold). Last year, they started the specials in November. Even a Black Friday or a Cyber Monday deal is likely.
Do you have a lot of time to play some games now? If yes, I guess it is fine to try to find a way to maximise Game Pass Ultimate. I went the cheap way few months ago. Joined preview program and leveled up so I can get the $1 for 3 months Game Pass Ultimate (including converting existing Game Pass and XBox Live Gold to Game Pass Ultimate at 1:1). Then, quickly buy Game Pass Console for $1 for a month, XB Live Gold for a month - $1 and Game Pass PC for $1. Convert right away to get roughly 6 months. Even so, I know I will miss out on the ability to take advantage of potential Christmas deals.
It really depends on how much the XB Live Gold portion means to you. If you are more into the Game Pass portion like I do, I don't see a real need to get long term Game Pass Ultimate because Microsoft had provided cheap $1 or $2 deals pretty much every time a first party exclusive is about to launch.

I’ve already upgraded and want to do the same for the youngsters account - upgrade his Gold to Ultimate. Serves him up an advert on the dashboard to upgrade for $1 but then says ‘hey - you need a parent to do that for this product”. When I go and try and gift it to him it doesn’t offer the $1 deal! Kind of stuck.
If I purchased this deal would it upgrade his remaining Gold months to Ultimate?

Pay once for xbox game pass ultimate and they have access to all the games also, and at the same time so we play co-op games quite a bit.
Spot-on advice, but we have three xbox consoles in the house so game sharing using the home console function is great for Xbox #2 but the third needs its own Gold subscription (and Game Pass if desired).
GamePass Ultimate $1, unable to purchase issue (as your son is under 18). Suggest you have an online chat with Microsoft XBox Support see if they can sort it out for you. The $1 offer cannot be done as a gift (otherwise everyone will create new accounts to exploit it).

Only works if you havent already converted to Ultimate.
They can still be entered in but I think you get like 1 month Ultimate for every 3 months Gold or something similar.

These deals are notorious for that - I always prefer deals where the total amount of time is discounted up front.
Bonus tip: Never ever, ever buy a deal like this directly from Microsoft unless you want to loose seven to eight hours participating in online chat to get it rectified - they'll do anything to get out of giving you the extra months.

The bonus codes seem to activate the bonus month for recurring billing each time. I bought four codes and when I put the first bonus one in got the free month for setting up recurring billing, I then cancelled recurring billing straight away and put the next code in and activated recurring billing. Ended up getting four additional months by repeating this.

For PC, you can just get a Game Pass just for that which is cheaper
