Aftermarket Oil Filter (KNN or Aeroflow) or Ryco Similiar or OEM Toyota Oil Filters

Am gonna start to do servicing for my car since manufacturer warranty no longer applies.

Looking through sparesbox, SCA, repco etc, the following oil filters seem to be on their inventory list. Which one and why? Thanks

  • Ryco or similar oil filters
  • Toyota branded oil filters
  • Performance oil filters like Aeroflow and KN&N

Ryco or Toyota genuine only. The quality on others can range to ok to crap and it is not worth the few $ saved.

  • Sakura been using them for years never had a problem. Must be a hell of a markup on this stuff variations in prices from vendor to vendor can be 3x more.
With newer cars sometimes it's cheaper to buy original from the dealer than supercheap autobarn etc.

Sakura are cheap rubbish. Used to be able to get them for free, payed for a decent filter instead.

      • Wow where could you used to get them for free?

At my workplace. Free was too expensive.

      • What brand filters would you recommend?

This is a pretty good Oz comparison:

    • After watching that I might switch to Mann

    • “Ok”… “right”… doesn’t get more Aussie than that bloke.

Ryco is completely fine. Usually cheaper than OEM and "meets or exceeds OEM expectations."

  • Check the price that the dealers around you sell the OEM one for. They are often quite competitive, so for my last couple cars I just buy the OEM filters.

That said, previously I have used K&Ns exclusively on a new car, changing the oil and filter at half the manufacturer's specified intervals. Car was frequently pushed to its limits once warmed up and it drove as good as new when I got rid of it after 115,000kms. I also use K&N filters for my motorcycles as the nut on them is very handy to get the filters off given they are often in awkward positions. So no complaints from me regarding K&N filters.

  • Toyota OEM (with Toyota branded box) range from $130-210 per qty of 10 depending on whether source is from gumtree to eBay to dealers. Saw reports of fake one's going around, am worried. Buy too expensive, the aftermarket ones seems like a better choice, hence my question here.

    RYCO is around $15-16.

    • Have you looked at Ryde Toyota on eBay? That's where I get my genuine parts for my Corolla from. Had to buy a water pump and it was $50 cheaper than what my dealer quoted me

  • Check out Ryco Syntec oil filters if you want to pay 'premium' quality. Far better than Toyota OEM. I would only buy Toyota OEM filters from Toyota dealers. Too many Genuine Fakes around.

  • If you're a Toyota owner Amazon US is your friend. I buy genuine Toyota air filters for half the price of dealer delivered.
Also air cabin filters and other spare parts can be cheaper but you do need to compare prices with the dealer.

As for oil filters only use genuine Toyota oil filters. You can buy them from West Ryde Toyota cheap on eBay when you buy multiple.

  • Do you have a race car or some fancy exotic car? If not it probably doesn’t make a much difference. There are millions of car running around that are under serviced. Sure, they might wear a little early, but probably still last long enough that you’ll be thinking about an electric car before it dies.

  • Genuine Toyota (try Ebay in quantity)
    Denso (Toyota OEM manufacturer
    Mann
    Mahle
    Ryco

I have to admit that since the Honda got 2 lots of hail damage I just put the cheapest i can find on it and make sure the oil is changed regularly.

  • They are all a much of a muchness, all reputable brands.
