PBLEE20

Yes, it's yet another Bing Lee laptop deal. This time we have one of the cheapest 8th Gen i5 laptops I've seen. The 14" FHD touch display, 2-in-1 form factor, 256GB SSD & manufacturer claims of a battery life up to 12 hours aren't too bad to have either :) Only 4GB of RAM and also no backlit keyboard though, but I guess something had to give at this price.

Intel Core i5-8265U 1.6GHz
4GB DDR4 Memory
256GB SSD
14" FHD Multi-Touch Display
Windows 10 Home
Intel HD Graphics

Delivery Excludes: Adelaide Metro, Northern Territory, NSW Regional, Perth Metro, QLD Far North, QLD Regional, QLD South East, SA Regional, Tasmania, VIC Regional, WA Regional, WA Remote, PO Box

$838 @ Harvey Norman - Gerry also provides dimensions of 335 x 230 x 208 mm & weight of 1.7kg for those wondering

I think the RAM might be soldiered on

        • Oh nooooooooo

        • Just unsoldier it? Can’t be that hard

          • +1

            @MuddyClear: and lose your warranty..

            anymore bright ideas?

            • -1

@pinkybrain: Well if you don’t know if you can do it then you probably shouldn’t.

              • +2

@MuddyClear: can or can't do it is not the problem..

when you desolder the ram you are voiding the warranty.

        • +1

          no extra slot ?

          • @dcep: Great post OP. Many laptops with soldered on ram still have a spare empty up gradable

ram slot, but not all. Can someone confirm ( not going to say open it up because even

if you say please you can still get negged for asking lol ).

Codral should be able to help with that…

  • Do you know the model number ie a114. You can look up the specs on crucial.com

  • Can the ram be upgraded or added?

At least it's not soldered in

Translation from the video: "The 2GB RAM memory was replaced with an 8GB RAM memory, adding to the soldered-on memory of 4GB. This achieved the maximum supported RAM of 12GB."

On this Bing Lee model it's not clear to me whether the starting 4GB is soldered-on, or is a replaceable module, or is 2GB of each. But the video does imply that it can be upgraded to a total of at least 8GB.

This seems like a pretty good deal yet it doesn't have anywhere near the attraction that the i3 model does, what gives? i5 + touch + less bulky

    • This WAS a great deal ( now all 9 sold out ).

For a little more than the Aspire 5 you get an i5/touch/256gb HHD/definite IPS screen and alloy construction, but miss out on Backlit Keyboard.

The difference in screen size and hence bulk could be a Pro or a Con depending on your needs. They should both be fairly slim and light for their size, but the build on this Spin should be a little better as well as longer battery life too.

For people who missed out consider this one, less battery life and little lower performance, but does have backlight Keyboard for less $$$.

    FYI:
-ram is soldered, no spare slot for upgrade
-kingston ssd, which should be slower than average
-no usb 3.1, but a sd card reader
-feel very plastic and weak build.

    • Cheers for info. Did you buy one, opened it up and viewed ram set-up?

Not too surprised as I have been caught out like that myself years ago and got stuck with 2GB not up-gradable, and had an Acer also with 4GB soldered on and no slot, at least that was dirt cheap.

Still a decent deal considering entry Surface tablets only have 4GB and sells for close to this without keyboard. Good enough for basics or travel laptop/ultrabook.

So no usb 3.1 ( you mean the type C ? ). Specs list both usb 3.1 type C as well as usb 3 ( technically also 3.1 but this should be the type A ) on Bing Lee specs as well as Acer's specs ( could be a copy mistake here ).

Is it Full Plastic Build with Zero Aluminium, that would be a shame, as well as no backlit keyboard ( listed as No in specs ).

      • Would like to know as well.

Sorry for late as I was on strip .
Yes I bought and opened the back cover.
Yes I mean type c USB.
Yes it’s plastic with a mental sheet on top. I used credit card to open the cover but left cutting signs on the sheet.

I bought it for my school boy but changed my mind. I plan to use it at home only. It’s still better than a chrome book I reckon.
