Saw this at Ausdroid's Wednesday Deals, Google NEXUS ONE (made by HTC) is on special for $299. MobiCity has standard $15.95 Australian delivery.

Pretty old phone (released Jan 2010), but a pretty nice phone (since I have one :) OTA upgrade to stock Android 2.3.4, noise cancelling mic, 800x480 AMOLED (although a later revision has LCD), 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, 512MB memory, etc. See the Wikipedia page for details.

    850MHz or 900?

    EDIT: it's the 900MHz 3G variant… ie not NextG

    • -3

Doubt tht matters, besides you wouldn't want a NX1 with Telstra and their 3G rates ! Awesome Bargain had the NX1 1-2yrs ago Brillian phone ! Only issue I had with it were the Capacitive keys comming in the way… :(

      • +2

Do you have any idea what you're talking about?

They have the best 3g service and you can get cheap data rates, if you go prepaid spend $50 a month go a weekend pack (Free text/talk all weekends), buy a 3GB data pack for $49 (Already have 2GB included in the recharge, so totals 5GB) and it includes $350 calls/texts for weekdays.

Also; it has a usage bloody network, unlike anything else we have available to us in Australia. Thus making a non 850Mhz smart phone almost a must if you actually want to use it anywhere besides a city.

      • also NX1 only was only announced in January 2010, the most recent you would have gotten it would have been 2nd July 2010(voda release) unless you ordered from O/S

use PROMOTION CODE "TYV20" TO $20 off

    • Apparently there's a $10 cashback at MoneyBackCo too.

  • it's from MobiCity (not MobyCity)

    • Ta. Fixed,

  • +4

It's a great phone. Mines still going strong, will do me nicely untill nexus 3 is out.

    Sent from my Nexus One.

    • Ditto, shame they just dropped in value 50% on the second hand market thanks to this :p

"800x480 AMOLED (although a later revision has LCD)"

So what does this one have? AMOLED or LCD?

  • ahhhh just bought a Huawei X5 for $265, worth spending an extra 50-60 bucks for this? I got the X5 from dickies so no problems getting a refund

    • I have clients with HTC handsets. It seems both the HTC-branded handsets, and the Google Nexus-branded ones that are made by HTC, all have a problem with low audio output and low ringer output. This problem has persisted for a couple of years' production and HTC seem uninterested in fixing it. If you Google for this you will see heaps of complaints and no proper solutions.

So if you expect to be able to hear the HTC-manufacturer phone ringing in noisy environments, such as on a street, you may be disappointed.

I don't use an Android handset myself, but in configuring the HTC Andoid handset for clients I am disappointed with the HTC bloatware that is apparently part of the "HTC Sense" user interface. You get HTC's weather app, HTC's stockmarket app, and other stuff, and HTC have decided that you can not uninstall them and you can not prevent them from refreshing and consuming data. I find this offensive and, if I were buying, would go for a generic Android without the bloatware, which I believe the Huaweis tend to be.

From my experience with HTC, you are better off with the Huawei, but more exerpienced users may have different suggestions.

      • thanks lepenseur, really appreciate the the indepth response.

However, the X5 did come with quite a bit of bloatware :P which same as you I absolutely detest; first thing I do when I buy a branded pc is reformat it to a stock windows. This was also the first thing I did with the huawei, flashed it with some bare ROMs.

I was just curious about peoples opinions for the switch because even though its full of bloatware its easily reflashable to something more stock. However, I'll take your word on the hardware problems, even though huawei has some of its own such as some battery problems but there seems to be a very active dev community for this device.

      • +3

It's true they're lower quality speakers, although this is somewhat rectified with a custom ROM which has better sound settings.

HTC sense will never be found any on variants of the Nexus branding, as they are and always will be vanilla Android.

      • My HTC Desire is using MIUI and it is second to none. I am thinking of getting another Desire down the track to root it for MIUI. I prefer the Desire over Nexus because they have physical buttons.

        • Yeah its a close call, we have both N1 and Desire in the family and it comes down to personal preference. I like the desires hard buttons, but I love the N1s illuminated trackball.

        • Nearly ALL new Android handsets have a perfectly working MIUI rom available these days.

      • +3

Just to clarify, although this is a HTC made phone, it will NOT have the HTC sense bloatware. The software is vanilla direct from Google.

        • was just about to add the same comment

        • And I said it almost an hour ago. :P

    • yeah i would like to know this too. which is better, this or the x5?

      • I'd say the Nexus One is marginally better.
Faster Processor - 1GHz vs 800MHz and I would assume the build quality is better.
Finally, software support is direct from Google as opposed to waiting for Hacker communities to release new versions of software cause the manufacturers/carriers delay updates.

        • other differences to consider:

FM Radio: X5 no, Nexus One yes
Video recording: 720p@30fps X5 vs 480p@20fps Nexus One
Wireless: X5 11n support, Nexus One no 11n support

Does anybody know if there is a hack for recording 720p for the Nexus one?

        • Nexus One has 11n support. The key selling point for N1 is that it's a "google phone" and has pretty good build quality. I haven't played around a Huawei X5 though.

        • was it given 11n support over a firmware update or something? either that or gsmarena's specs are wrong :S

          have u tried this 720p hack? :) http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/09/nexus-one-steps-up-to-720…

        • @CVonV
          If you root and install Cyanogenmod;
          RM Radio - Yes
          Video 720p recording - Yes
          11n support - Yes

Rooting/unlocking the nexus one is a lot easier than most other phones - because it is essentially a developer phone.

        • +1

Nexus 11n came with the 2.2 official update.

        • yeah I read the FM radio is unlocked via rooting

i've been watching 720p videos on youtube of it.. it looks like it's just upscaled from 480p to be quite honest.. sound quality is substandard too

        • CVonV

          N1 has 720p recording and 802.11n

    • The N1 is still an awesome phone and one of the great things is you get the latest Android straight away over the air.

    • tomo88,

How do you get a refund when you have already started using the phone?

      Just curious.

  • +2

the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play for $399 looks like a damn good buy too. fairly new phone for a relatively low price…

    • I have been disapointed with SonyE's firmware updates or lack thereof. And locks on parts system not allowing the modders to produce updates for community.

    • I've been so tempted to sell off my Inspire 4G and pick one of these up, if only for a quick test and a few games.. It's such a cool idea. (Even if I feel like I'm getting a bit too old to play portable game consoles.;)

    • +1

That's a bargain for outright, considering most of the plans the Xperia Play is offered on.

      • Indeed it is, I would be all over it if it was Next G.. Next G version is like $200+ more BAH!

  • +1

Nothing against you Scotty, but I've had numerous run ins with Mobicity recently when ordering stock which is listed as "In Stock" then going straight to back ordered after it says it was ready to ship, then waiting for weeks with no contact and being forced to cancel orders due to this. I have reported them to ACCC for this. I wouldn't trust these guys any longer, false advertising and a completely non-existent stock system.

    • +2

No problem. I have never purchased anything from Mobicity before and just happened to spot the offer when I saw it coming in my RSS feed. If you have previous problem with Mobicity yes then it would be a good idea to voice out so people are aware of it.

      • I forgot to add the most important part, the items remain listed as "In Stock" during this time. Totally frustrating.

  • +1

A feature of the Nexus One that most aren't aware of is its noise cancelling function on calls. It has a second microphone which picks up ambient noise so it can be cancelled and the person you're speaking to can hear you even in noisy environments.

I'm not aware of any other phone with this feature. If I was in the market for a new Android based phone I'd grab this in a heartbeat.

EDIT: I see this is actually mentioned in the description - nice work Scotty.

    • And a trackball with a multi-coloured light inside it for different notifications!

My Inspire has noise cancellation too btw.

    • iphone 4 has this feature, not a fanboy but I thought of informing you just in case :D

    • Correct me if I am wrong, I think Nexus One was the first mass produced phones to have Noise Cancelling tech with dual mic, the iPhone 4 later implemented this. Saying that, the noise cancelling works amazingly on the iphone 4.

    • I believe AT&T variety of Samsung Galaxy S (Samsung Captivate) also has the noise cancelling chip built in.

      • Shows how up to date I am with phone specs …

I guess it's grounds for HTC to counter-sue Apple.

        • The Galaxy S2 also has this as well =]

  • +1

Seeing as nexus s can be had for $100 more, what am i missing here? Is there not a major difference between the two?

    • +1

nexus s = slightly faster proccessor, major boost in gpu, nfc added, bigger and brighter screen.

lots of cons too but I'm sure you'll find out :)

sadly, Nexus S should have been made by HTC with the same metal finish with bigger screen and faster processor. The change in manufacturer could be due to HTC wanting to move on to a locked bootloader during that period and Samsung came out guns ablazing with the SGS and download mode on their phones.

I am sure Peter Chou regretted that moment till this day.

      • Seeing how NFC chips and samoled display aren't in australian models, do you think this is a far better choice.

        • +1

Also there is no microSD card on the NS, thats a deal breaker right there for many people.

        • I hate it when they separate the sales page from their usual ones, its quite deceiving if new buyers didn't know about this sale that supercedes their current sale,

          http://www.mobicity.com.au/google-nexus-one.html

anyway, the ones from mobicity are imported nexus s, you can see the super amoled tag.

        • +1

The 19020t has slcd, the 19023t has samoled, and they sell the samoled for $599

        • i couldnt find that page you're on, all i could see is i9020t samoled,

          http://www.mobicity.com.au/samsung-google-nexus-s.html

        • oops sorry mixed the models up, but yeah as you can see the samoled is $599, you can get it for <$500 from UK though.

        • ahh thats what i thought, i think the i9023 should still come with NFC? pretty sure mobicity import their phones too and not aussie models

(frankly for any non-telco retailer using the loophole, not worth buying aussie stock, been there done that :)

        • IIRC the 19023t doesn't have NFC either.

Hard choice for me, I need a new phone and I was planning on the nexus S but this definitely throws a spanner in the works.

I much prefer the design of the nexus s though.

        • are you absolutely sure the i9023t does not have NFC? every other online store I went to list it down as having it, perhaps you should email them to confirm again.

  • My biggest/only gripe with the Desire is the severe lack of internal memory which mean you are constantly uninstalling apps to make way for others (even after moving them to SD card).

The Nexus One looks to have the same issue …
    http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/android/thread?tid=0b6…

  • the link isnt working anymore… just re-directs to their home page. offer expired?

  • OTA upgrade to stock Android 2.3.4 < what does this mean? OTA?

    • Over The Air.

It means you don't have to dick around with downloading on a PC and installing over USB or suchwhat.

  • HTC makes great phones… but i have only 2 issues with pretty much almost all of their phones.

Pathetic battery and epicly lousy speakers/ringer.

If only they fixed these 2 issues… sigh

    • don't forget poor internal memory and sub-par lcd screens. Samsung and iphone still dominate these areas.

      • The LCD issue doesn't really relate to this phone though because its using a Samsung manufactured AMOLED.

        The newer HTC's use a Sony-Samsung manufactured S-LCD…

        • yep I know, I used to own one of the first HTC Desire's with the same AMOLED screen. There was nothing majorly wrong with it but it wasn't that great, no wow factor. Point was their screens are ordinary (even when they had AMOLED) but even more so now that they are using SLCD…

    • dang you're right, OP please update.

  • Can mobicity op please comment? Really wanted to grab this special for 299. Cheers.

  • Looks like the offer has expired or sold out. I am marking it as expired now.
