Curious about the 46L cos going to Africa for three weeks and always done checked baggage but don't want to do that this time
I mean, i talk a big game, longest overseas trip ive done with it is a week in thailand. i think it'd be a struggle to do a 3 week overseas trip with just the porter 46, especially with the arcane carry-on liquid restrictions on international flights. however id love to know how you go!
I've done 4 weeks with Farpoint 40. Need to be clever but it was not hard.
Well I don't mind cos I always pack light and the checked baggage was more for bringing souvenirs home. So yeah not phased. Still tossing it up a bit but since this trip is off the beaten path, I think it's more suitable to have something like the Osprey.
What was the appeal may I ask though of the Osprey, was it that it was much more lightweight so could fit more into it up til the 7.5kg baggage limitz
@adrianhughes1998: its super light (less than 1kg), but still has enough "structure" that it forms a regular rectangle shape
it has a big top zip flap (unlike ruck sacks which you need to fill from the top like a garbage bag) so really easy to fill and use on a daily basis without having to empty and refill it
it has really good cinch-straps to compress it down to carry on size when its full
you can use it as a backpack or as a satchel bag
i have the osprey 46 and the caribee sky master 40. i actually use the sky master more often, but only because it has more separate compartments (the osprey only has the big main compartment and a very small top compartment). the osprey is a much, much better quality bag than the sky master.
@xyron: Thanks for the suggestions all helps :). Would you say either is quite secure travelling, or is it just better to wear it in the front of me
Sorry for noob questions
@adrianhughes1998: Well like any backpack im sure someone could slash the straps and snatch it from you with a sharp enough knife/machete.
I have the same one. perfect carry on size. Plenty of storage. Can be compressed and made to look smaller.
The 30L a great travel bag if you ALSO have checked in luggage, and then use it for day trips during your travels, which the 46L would be too big for.
Fair enough, plenty of other much cheaper and more supportive backpacks for that purpose though. The porter 46 is already pretty average for back comfort so I can't see how the 30 would be any better. I certainly wouldn't want to be wearing a backpack without decent support for a day of touristing.
30L backpack is pretty standard now a days for ultralight overnight and short hiking . I have a different brand 30L backpack which i use for 1-3 night hikes . I can fit in my tent , sleeping bag and mat , stove and pot and food and clothes in that . I know a lot of people have done the 240 mile john muir trail in usa with 30L inlcuding carrying 7 days worth of food in bear containers (ive seen a few use 20L bags ) . this brand is not as light as some of the new type ultralight backpacks but it is known as one of the most comfy ones
Great brand backpacks. My Osprey Farpoint has been awesome for quite a few years now and served me well avoiding the need for check-in luggage.
I love osprey but their quality has gone downhill, still have lifetime warranty though, so meh
My comet 28l also okay. Not too big not too small.
Could you sneak in the 65l as carry on or does it just stick out as too bulky?
the main dimensional difference is length - 64cm long vs 56cm. while 8cm doesnt sound like much i can definitely see the more pernickety jetstar/tiger bag weighers getting narky about it. i think if you rocked the 65l but didnt have it packed full, you would be ok. the more likely issue you will run into is weight. most airlines only let you carry on 7kg nowadays and the budget carriers are really cracking down on enforcing it. if you filled the 65l version you'd almost certainly be over 7kg unless all you had was thin cotton undies in there…
Thanks OP, bought the porter 65L.
My partner has had the 65L for almost 2 years now and has done us wonders travelling. We paid more than $200 - Absolute steal at $115 with free shipping.I have the 13L daypack, great for cycling. It's just a touch small. Thinking about getting the 20L, don't exactly love the colour and not sure if it's worth it for 7L?
Not sure what the point of the 30l bag is. I've got the 46l (Max carry on size) and I reckon I've saved hundreds of dollars on checked bags with it. But 30l is just a regular backpack size.
