Xbox GamePass for Those Who Has It or Don't but Already Tried It: Why Not and Why Yes?

Hello Xbox fellas, it might sounds a stupid question but I will shout it anyways. Please, feel free to be black and white :)

I am an "offline player" I don't play online, must of the titles I play you can have a lot of fun playing alone such as Gears, Tom Raider, Call of Duty, etc.
So far these are the information I have. I can be wrong!

HOW I DO:

  • I buy the game, and sell it once I finished playing. Sometimes I have a great deal back, sometimes not that much like Gears 5 coz it was on GamePass.
  • If I wanna keep the game such as Tomb Raider collection, Forza, Sonic Team Racer which is fun to play splitting screen, etc, then I buy the digital edition at cdkeys.com where usual is cheaper than anywhere else.

GAME PASS

POSITIVE:

  • Every month you have 30 days to play some games for "free" —- not really free but I won't discuss that.
  • Exclusives you can play for free "on second 1" of the release day.
  • Currently the GamePass comes with Gold which gives you some deals on games
  • You can play with people around the globe

NEGATIVE:

  • You only have 30 days to play those games so if you are a busy person, relationship life, or parents life, you will end buy playing one or two
  • Gold gives you some deals but they are digital edition so you cannot sell them and many times the same game is cheaper elsewhere.

So the question, Why Not and Why Yes?

Feel free to say what you think, no discussions, more like sharing experience :)

Thanks guys

$10/5 a month to play 200+ games on xbox / 100+ on pc vs $60-$70 for one AAA game that's probably bad. Answers itself.

Not sure what you mean by only 30 days to play a given game - is that thinking that you're only paying one month at a time?

I'm an Xbox fan, and Game Pass Ultimate has cemented that for me. Half the games I had on my Steam wishlist (smaller indie games mostly) have actully been released on Game Pass in the last few months - so purely by retail value Game Pass is a huge win. It's even better when considering I was ALREADY paying for Xbox Live, and the XGP Ultimate upgrade was/is a huge bonus on top. Great games like Wandersong, Outer Wilds, Felix the Reaper (that released this week) that I was willing to pay for, I've now got for zero out of pocket.

Second benefit for me is PC access - when you're contesting a lounge & TV time with many children (playing LEGO Star Wars!) then retreating to my PC to play is much easier now I've got almost all of my existing library available to play.

I DON'T subscribe to any video streaming services, so it not yet another subscription cost in my budget - it's the only one. I would conjecture that it has better value than a Netflix subscription in terms of hours of entertainment per $ spent.

Trying new games is also great - I don't ever pay retail, so I don't ever get brand new games. Gears 5 (then also playing Gears 4) was a quite pleasant suprise I never would have bought outright otherwise, but now I've enjoyed it I'll certainly be willing to give the other games a play too.

    • I like the way how you described it. I really feel like "give it a try". Thanks for that

I saw that you can join this Game Pass for $1 showing on my Home Screen, then 10/15 monthly. Does it include playing online? Am I mixing things?
Sorry for the silly questions. Just an offline player asking why he is out while everyone is in hahaha

      Thanks again.

      • It's a bit confusing if you've not used it, yeah!

First is Xbox Live Gold - this was the original subscription for online access for the Xbox. Think it's $10 per month.

Then the new group is Game Pass - either Xbox ($10) or PC ($5), which gives you the access to games on your device.

Finally, at the best value is Game pass Ultimate which combines all three subscriptions into one at $15 per month.

Of course, there are your different $1 trials etc to use, but the best deal is to buy a year or two of Xbox Live Gold (about $60 per year) and then use the Ultimate upgrade 'hack' to convert it into Game Pass Ultimate - so you get 2yrs of Ultimate without it costing you more!

EDIT: I'm actually not sure if the upgrade hack still works, might have to double-check that

        • The hack still works.

I am giving it a try for 1y and see if I will take advantages of it.

I paid the same amount as a new release game that I would have paid anyways, so far so good.

Thank you for "drawing" how it works lol

  • Yes if you're interested in the games available in the pass.
No if you're not interested. Simples

Game Pass is awesome. Definitely take advantage of a $1 upgrade deal if you can. By preloading Gold I currently have Game Pass until March 2022 and only for $1. :)

    • Would you mind sharing how to do this? I signed up to a $1 deal on Friday (ultimate) to see if I like it. It's brilliant! :)

      • You cant do it now that you've already signed up to ultimate.

        • Thanks mate :)

      • I don't think it's an option anymore. It was a special sale a few months back but hopefully it comes around again for those that missed it.

To take advantage of it you pretty much had to buy 3 years of Gold then do the Ultimate upgrade deal for $1. So you end up with 3 years of Ultimate instead. :)

        • Yeah, it's a bummer that I only heard about the Gold conversion "hack" once I had already accepted the $1 ultimate trial offer.

When my 1 month ultimate expires I'll go back to regular games pass and keep a lookout for the gold/ultimate deal to hopefully make a return.

Thanks again mate, I appreciate it.

  • According to Microsoft users of the service buy more games when they use the service.

So it doesn't seem attractive to me: I lose $5 a month on the sub and then I lose even more money than I am spending on games now - if I am a typical user. Net loss.

The music business was decimated by streaming as the cost of music was reduced to the cost of nerds distributing it. I wonder if the same fate awaits the gaming sector in the future.

    • I lose even more money than I am spending on games now

…because Microsoft told you to buy their games?? What absurd thinking. You make zero consideration for the fact you probably already buy games independently, just to justify disliking Game Pass?

Game Pass is good value, but if you have slow internet, it will probably be not too great.

It's a subscription service. If you're not interested in owning games and renting, it's great provided you make full use of it.

I like to have a collection of games and displaying them is something I have a bit of pride in (lol). The thought of paying $150 a year and having nothing to show for it doesn't sit right with me.

paying $150 a year and having nothing to show for it

The same logic applies to my digital games collection on Steam though… All I can 'show off' is a list of icons.

I'd rather the experience and enjoyment of a game (in the same line of thought as the tourism industry - paying for an experience) than I would having a physical item to be scratched or lost. But that make me the most optimal Game Pass customer, and if you enjoy a collection (of, well, anything really) then any kind of subscription service simply won't give you that enjoyment of a physical collection.

      • I'd rather the experience and enjoyment of a game

        You said everything.
As I said in the other comment, the game needs to have history, great play experience, great graphics. I don't like playing just "to play"
Gears I could see how crazy the game changed since 3 I guess for Xbox One
Tomb Raider will always be Tomb Raider <3
COD is the best shooting game, followed by Battlefield in my opinion of course. The game's history, game experience, is so sick. WW2 and the last one is just no comments.

Going back to the subject, COD: Modern Warfare I ended buying it coz I don't wanna to wait for months to be available on Game Pass. I guess this is why I won't renew the Game Pass, for me it is useless.

I used to like having the physical discs but:

        • takes space from time to time
        • you will never be able to have that money back if you try to sell them at some point. If you have those special steel box edition is another history.
        • damage as you mentioned

What I am doing now, I buy the game for example Shadows of Tomb Raider, play it, sell it, have a very little loss, and wait for it to be cheap at cdkeys or xbox store. I bought the Tomb Raider collection for 40 or so at cdkeys, all the games.

Sonic Team Racing, I have a lot of fun playing with my gf. You can play up to 4 friends splitting the screen, so much fun. I got rid of the disc and have its digital edition now

  • Thanks for all the reply guys. I am testing 1y as mentioned and so far:

    • Gold is some kind of Game Pass: You can play some specific games for free. You can buy games cheaper but if you don't renew your subscription you cannot play them. So you pay twice as much, first for the game and second the subscription to play the game you already paid for. Makes no sense to spend money there. I prefer to spend more at cdkeys.com knowing that it is once in life.

    • Games Pass: Some weird games, the good ones such as Gears 5 (I already bought it, finished within 16h and sold it), and Forza 4 (bought the digital edition at cdkeys.com). The good thing here is that if there is any game that is my style, I can download it and play it without paying anything extra. But not necessary that include latest releases such as the new COD for example as far as I checked. So or you wait few weeks (months?) to release in the Game Pass or you end buying it even having Game Pass.

It seems like, these services are great for those who plays anything or have the problem to share TV.
For players like me who plays very specific games, you will have to wait to play on Games Pass which is not my thing.

This is the conclusion I had after spending a night exploring these services.

Yeah if you're one of those people who just play CoD/Fortnite/FIFA etc. 24/7 rather than a variety of games then it's definitely not worth it for you.

      • Yep, my list is pretty small. The game needs to have history, great play experience, great graphics. I don't like playing just "to play" :

        • COD - played all the games. I don't miss one
        • Battlefield - few, 5 is so damn sick
        • Gears - 3, 4 and 5. The evolution of the game. MOG
        • Tomb Raider - all the games
        • Wolfenstein - missing the last one
        • Need for Speed - a bunch but it is not the same as it used to be. Underground 2 and Most Wanted were the best.
        • Forza - 4 only, and wow.

As you might know, I am trying 1y and what I have been enjoying so far is:

        • COD: Play online, man, that is pretty cool. Okay, it depends of the team you are playing against, you die more than kill hahahaha I played campaign my whole life and I kinda enjoyed the experience.
        • Forza 4: It was fun to play some street racer with "real people"

I might end buy having Gold only which allow me to play online somewhat.
