Too good to be true computer bargains on eBay

Dear OzBargain, long time lurker first time poster.

So I bought this dude's computer on an auction that ended at 4am for like half the price it's worth, and he came back saying it was already sold…but that he has another computer (2019 model) he's selling for a third of the brand new price - only he "misplaced" the charger.

I like cheap shit as much as the next ozb, but will ebay cover me if it is a scam? Or, like, if the computer runs a little warm would I be in the wrong for buying it?

  • Stolen computer without the charger in your possession is going to feel as comfortable that time you had a shower with the trick soap incident.

"This dude's computer" would make an excellent eBay name.

"Hey, nice computer. Where do you get it?"
    "This dude's computer."
"No. Your computer. Where's it from?"
    "This dude's computer."
    "Oh, FFS."

If you only ever buy on ebay, I would neg him for wasting your time.

i know that the 20TB sd card i ordered for $30 is real.

  • Also a third of the retail value is about standard pawn shop pricing, so might be about right for the lower end of ebay. Also if it's not a macbook then you can't expect it to hold its value even if it was as new.

  • Obviously trying to scam you.

  • Just leave the seller negative feedback and report them to eBay.

eBay made excuses for him for backing out of the auction that he obviously wasn't happy with the price of. They also made excuses for him marking as "sent" despite not having my address.

  • I canned the sale of a bulk record lot recently before auction was ended, I thought auctions were somewhat binding but obviously not. But I don't recommended buying a second hand computer because the likelihood of it having something wrong with it is high.

  • Don't do it

  • Thanks guys, I'll wait until OzBargain pops up with a more legit deal
