Collected Used Car and Immediately Returned with Issue

Hi team, I test drove a used ranger a couple of weeks ago and purchased + collected it from a respectable dealer today. Low milage ranger, 5 years old, ex fleet vehicle with 1 owner. Upon driving out I heard a slight grinding noise. I did a few laps around the block to test it out and found it was happening intermittently during acceleration. I returned it to the dealership and they handled the situation very professionally, assessed and agreed that there is a problem. The ranger is now left with them while they explore the issue which they think is something to do with the turbo.

I am in the position where I can cancel the agreement, is this a sign that I should cancel the contract and start my ute hunt again or be happy for the dealer to fix the issue and hope for the best?

Update: thanks for reminder that there are more fish in the sea. Car is now cancelled and moving onto another

I will be asking them to warrant the work being completed at a minimum. Note car only has a 3m stat warranty

Wait and see if they can correctly identify and rectify the fault. If they can’t do that or say there’s nothing wrong then walk away.

If you have an out, take it.

You can always buy the same exact vehicle if/when you know the vehicle is in good repair.

    Why limit your options?

    • With used cars there is always something that will need repairing in the future. At least this is a part that is being repaired before I buy it?

There isn't a magical limit to how many things can be wrong with a used car. Just because you know about this issue doesn't mean there can't also be other unknown issues.

And a lot of the time, one faulty part can stress other parts prematurely, even if they haven't failed yet.

        • Good call, I'll gain an understanding of what exactly went wrong and gain some 3rd party advice before taking it. I just asked them to confirm that I can walk away from my contract based on this occurring before the car even left the lot and they havent explicitly said that I can. At this stage without creating too much fuss I am waiting on the results of the repair, they have offered to pay for a 3rd party inspection

  • The Ford Ranger is Australian’s best selling Ute. It won’t be difficult to find another one.

    • I can already hear the Hilux boys breathing heavy.
