  • Had many a good night on the piss at Daimyo, Fukuoka with ippudo at the end.

  • There’s a store that’s just out of walking distance from my office, always wanted to try. How is it compared to other typical “authentic” Japanese Ramen?

    • +3

All of the Ippudos I've been to here really cannot compare to the ones in Japan. The taste is alright, but honestly I'd only ever go when they have the anniversary specials.

  • The ramen there is pretty good.

But what is the base of this Anniversary Ramen?

    • Going by the Facebook photo, I think it's this

  • +4

From what I recall, the anniversary Ramen (which is not on the menu) is smaller than store specific $10 store birthday ramen (Akimaru and Shinmaru).

    Happy to be wrong

  • Ippudo doesn't consider ramen to be food? Their opening hours have different last order times for food and ramen… so ramen isn't food.

    • Ramen is made in bulk quantities, hence the later last order time

      • +1

        It comes out v. quickly.

  • -1

    Their ramen isn't great

    • -5

Ditto, it's just a mediocre franchise likely using powdered soup.

    • What's a good one then?

      • +1

Ryo's, Yasaka in the city (the Bondi Junction one uses different noodles), Ramen Zundo to name three

      • Kikuma @ Canley Vale is awesome. Try their Okonomiyaki also :)

        • They changed owners at least last year so I'm not sure if they hold up anymore. I like their katsu a lot because its crispy and has a salad with a citris dressing. Their ramen though… I thought their $16 dollar normal ramen wasn't that flavourful, it was more of a $13 ramen bowl. I prefer Ippudo though if I'm paying similar price for sure.

          • @sofasty: Didn't know they changed owners! haven't been there in a year since moving out of Merrylands area. I'm going there this Thursday though!

          • +1

@sofasty: I found their new shop about 2 months back, now Kosuke Ramen @ Newington.

Probably some of the greatest Ramen in Sydney, even better than when they were at Canley Vale.

  • What's the full price tho?

    • +4

Cheapest bowl starts from $15. This only gets sold during anniversary time so not sure what the standard price is

  • I tried going during their last special and there was a queue of about 60 people waiting…. I just kept walking on. I hardly ever get to have ramen as they arent that common but i was shocked at how busy it was.

    • Aren't that common? Where do you live? There's heaps in Sydney city (Melbourne too)

      • +1

I went during work hours so mac centre. Live in strathfield. Yeah I have been told the good proper authentic/ real japanese restaurants are usually found in the eastern suburbs or city as most of the other suburbs arent really run by japanese so not as authentic. I dont really go to the City or eastern suburbs much. There was Zenya in eastwood but that shut down. I believe there was another decent japanese restaurant in West Ryde but i hear their ramen isnt that great.

Come to the city/north shore (Ryo's in Crows Nest) to try some authentic ones; I listed a few in an earlier comment :). There's also Gumshara.

RaRa in Redfern seems to be the current trendy ramen place to go to going by the wait on a Thursday evening a few weeks ago when it was only 5:50 p.m. (Worth checking out)

Trying it in QV Melbourne, no queues at 2:20pm. Waiting for Ramen!

    • There was a queue of about a dozen people at 1:20 at Central Park. I only have 30 minutes on my break 😭

      • Well. The $10 Ramen contains following: 1× Pork char siu, some spring onions, some bean sprouts, 1 serve of noodle. That's it…

Feels like it's a reduced price for reduced portion.

        • Are you able to upload a photo for us please? :)

            • @BruceJack: Thanks! I guess you're not like me and take photos before you start eating ahaha

Did it taste good at least?

              • +1

@kerfuffle: Haha I always forget to do that. The taste is fair. I personally like Hakata Gensuke more. Ended up with extra noodle.

                • @BruceJack: I've only tried Hakata Gensuke once, but I was heaps sick when I tried it so not the best way; must try it again next time I'm in town (or Perth next month; apparently there's one there)

                  • +1

@kerfuffle: Yep, and they are with Liven gives you 10% off (in Mel), check if they have it in Perth.

          • +1

@kerfuffle: Added some chilli oil, found black fungus at the bottom of the bowl

            • @BruceJack: Yeah, I get a plain tonkotsu and spike it with lots of chilli oil as their spicy one isn't spicy enough for my liking

    • Lies there is a queue now ;)

  • Did anyone find the broth with more fat than normal? Is this a different (cheaper to make) broth?

  • +2

There's about 30-40 person queue @ mq centre. Probably 30+ minute wait. I'm out!
