Very Late Arrival at Haneda Airport

We arrive at Haneda at 00.30, and the train stops at midnight. I have looked at airport hotels and well over the $200 mark. Taxi to where we are staying is roughly $170 plus if you add an extra hotel night its a big expense. We are on the pension love to travel but live as cheaply as we can to be able to do this. So any Oz Bargainers out there with some ideas or even experience I welcome your input. I know there is a capsule type place at the airport but it seems to be booked out on our date.

Thank you so much, I should have checked the arrival time but was to busy checking the layover before we arrived . Also getting the tickets booked before my husband changed his mind.

Perhaps they didn't know that the trains stopped at 12? I found out the hard way

You'd think in all the talk from people who have been to Japan and how amazing and on time their train system is, that someone would mention it closes at 12. Alas, they did not, nor did it come up in any research.
Op will be fine with a bus so it's not like they're stranded

  • Where do you have to go to?

  • Spend the night in a sofa.

I’m going to suggest something a bit more creative. Sleep on the plane. Arrive, clear customs etc. sees you at the night bus stop at 1:30am. Bus to you lodgings to drop off your bags, but don’t check in yet. Head down to the tuna auction and see all the excitement as dawn approaches.
    Get a leisurely breakfast.
Then head back to your hotel for check in and a hour or two nap before heading out for the rest of the day.

  • Thanks, mskeggs depending on how well we hold sounds like a nice idea.

Make sure you inform the hotel that you are arriving late. Otherwise they may put you down as a no-show and cancel the reservation.

      Where about is your hotel?

      • Thank you we are in Shin OKUBU city hotel, if we can get airport night bus we will try and book a day earlier.

        • Okay looks like the closest stop to Shinokubo for those late night buses is Shinjuku Station. From there it is only about 1.4km to your hotel, so either walk it or grab a taxi from Shinjuku station.

          • @AdosHouse: AdosHouse thank you, do you know how difficult it will be to get a taxi at that early hour?.

            • @lesleigh: It will be easy, Shinjuku is a decent size station, and it serves the local Red Light District, which is a all-night area. So transport will be easy.

Just print this and give it to the driver if they don't speak English. It is literally the next suburb to Shinjuku so the driver should easily be able to get there.

              • @AdosHouse: Thank you AdosHouse your fantastic I am inclined to overthink but as I am the one who has to do all the booking and planning you have been such a help.

@lesleigh: LOL,you just described me. I am the one that books and plans everything for holidays. I am heading to Japan on Sunday, and I have got daily plans for each day I'm there, what I am seeing, and how to get between each place. I have every single aspect of my holiday over-planned, that's just what I do.

                  • @AdosHouse: Well, I hope you enjoy every planned minute of it, and also the lovely surprises as well.

                    • @lesleigh: Thanks mate, I hope yours goes stress free and you enjoy your time there too.

          • @AdosHouse: There will be taxis available. But be sure to take a print out of the directions with you showing the address in Japanese. Japanese taxi drivers expect you to know where you are going. and direct them. The level of English in Japan is generally very good amongst the younger generation, but not so good on the over 50's. Typically the driver will be over 50 and will be very courteous, but not necessarily a good English speaker.

            • @Lanceswift: Thank you Lanceswift we usually do this when traveling where we don't speak the language.

    • I have looked at their site but it seems to be fully booked, or I am reading it wrong. which is highly possible.

  • Hi, try the JAL Hotel at Haneda. Rates are around $160. We used it as a break for an odd arrival time also. There are many hotels where you can't check-in to Tokyo till about 3pm anyways. Good Luck.

    • Thank you but Ithink if possible we will take the late-night bus.

  • Look at the Relief Premium Haneda Hotel, its about $90/night. It does have a free airport shuttle but I dont think it runs 24hrs, there is a train station 500M from the hotel on the Keikyu Airport line or its bout 5km in a taxi.
Another affordable option, a little closer to the airport, is Theatel Haneda, again its a 5 min walk from the station but buses go past the front door of this place.

  • Thank you but hopefully, we can catch the late bus and then from Shinjuku catch a taxi, provided there are any around at that hour.

    • Would be interested in your feedback on the bus. Have a great time.

  • I will let you all know how this works and if it was a joyful experience or not.

  • We arrived in Tokyo at a similar time last year and we (family of 5) stayed at an airport hotel upon arrival for the first time ever. It turned out to be a great recommendation from the travel agent who is a Japan specialist because you get to sleep earlier than the drive to the CBD & checking in, etc. That way, the next morning wake up is bearable and you make your way to wherever you need to go to next day in daylight and breakfast/coffee is available. You have to pay for a night's accommodation anyway so you get more value this way

There's a website that specializes in sleeping at airports sleeping at haneda

    • I'm probably going to Japan next year, this might prove useful. Thanks!

  • I have looked at airport hotels and well over the $200 mark.

It might sound like a lot but you are saving $100 or more likely $50. You got to know when to spend money to just have a more comfortable trip.

You can easily make that money back by eating cheaper and not going to so many events when you travel.

    • mokr, I travel to experience the food and the country. I use hotels to sleep and shower . The less I spend on that the more I can spend on what I really enjoy, as well as the fact I do not have a lot of money. we all, have different priorities
