Help with accounting video interview question

O.P.
The question is, "what type of accounting stream would you like to pursue in your career? E.g. Banking, professional firms or industry?".

Honest answer is I'd ideally like to work in the public sector for a few years to get the experience then move into a private company.

The company I'm applying for is an industry company though, so would they be looking for candidates that only want to work in industry?

I'm not sure what they're looking for here (if anything). This interview is for an internship while I study.

  • why public sector?

    • What do you mean?

      • Why do you want experience in the public sector? Why couldn't you get the same experience in the private sector?

        • Experience in the private sector would be rather limited. I’d be exposed to one company only.

          A professional firm/the public sector would expose me to a whole range of companies/businesses

    Is Public Sector a 'stream'?

    Auditing is a stream.

    As is taxation, company accounting and forensic accounting.

    • I thought it was oddly worded too but that’s what the question says- banking, private or public.

  • I think by “public sector” OP meant public accounting firms, as in professional firms which are actually in the private sector.

    • Public = professional accounting firms like the Big 4

      Private = individual companies

        You shouldn't describe professional accounting services as public sector. Public sector refers to government. Big 4 is public practise or professional accounting firm. Within Big 4, audit is probably the most "broad" and will lead to the most job opportunities, because you can get jobs in Financial Accounting, Management Accounting, Reporting, Treasury, Project Accounting, and some cross over into Corp Finance. But most people in even Tax, Corp Finance, or even Advisory these days are very desirable in industry because of your Big 4 background.
