Help Identifying and Getting Rid of This Pest

Hi Everyone,

We need some help in finding out what this pest is and how we can get rid of this. Pics of the pests in this album

We're confused between bed bugs and drugstore beetles. We've tried spraying them with bug spray but they still keep coming back. Their size is just a few mms and quite small.

Thanks!

start by getting your house fumigated professionally (~$150-200 ish).

Looks like two different insects. Definitely a bedbug but the other type doesn’t really look like a drugstore beetle to me. Call in the professionals.

1 - First is to reorganise your house. You'll be surprised what you find in all that mess. Do both indoor and outdoor. Sell some things, give away to friends and family, give for free on gumtree/donation centres, and throw others out to the bin.
2 - Second, do an inspection. See where there's damage, and spots of entry for pests.
3 - Third, do a thorough clean of the house. A rule of thumb is that creepy crawlies don't like a de-cluttered and cleaned house. This also means taking out pillows, quilts, fluffy things and washing them if possible, but putting them outside to be treated by the sun's harsh UV rays. Warm water and a good scrub all-round, followed up with Multipurpose cleaners, Ethanol, bleach etc etc. For outdoors, just do a quick pressure wash of the walls and floors.
4 - Fourth would be to buy those off-the-shelf pest cleaners. That means in house bombing, outdoor insect sprays, and nest traps for things like ants.
5 - Fifth, evaluate. See if they've been completely wiped out. Or if they're dying off. And checking spots of entry, and food sources etc etc. You might be surprised to find that there's a big nest from one of your neighbours.

Doing so in that order is usually enough for most pest control issues. And it could be more effective than hiring a pest professional which usually charge around $300 or more (don't trust those $99 ads). And the chemicals they use can sometimes be overboard for your situation, where they might harm other things like plants, the "good bugs" that live outdoors, pets, and allergy. And improper handling of these chemicals could lead to resistance by actual pests, like the Antibiotic Problem. Even better is that, you're essentially saving money, doing your spring cleaning, and learning about your environment (oh I was looking for this eneloop).

Not sure that I’d give away or donate anything that could potentially cause a bedbug infestation in someone else’s home.

    Insect Control Bomb

    Around $15 for a 3 pack.

    • Thanks. might give this a try.

      • follow instructions.

If you can go away for 24 hours it's much better for the kill rate and your health.

Also, if you have access to the roof & underfloor area do them as well.

<$50 will kill 95% of the insects - including the good ones :-(

I don't think they are fleas but I also didn't think we had bed bugs in AU.

You can send photos to the Australian Museum, DPI Entomology department or the CSIRO National Insect Collection and they might / should identify them for you

        • Thanks! Some good ideas there.

One of the rooms affected is a bedroom with a robe full of clothes. If we bomb it, do you reckon we move all the clothes to another location? There are sliding doors on the robe, though.

          • @starbearer: It's been a long time since I let one off in the house. I just do a roof and underfloor every year.

Read the instructions. They will probably give a recommendation.

Personally I'd leave the doors open but all of my partners would insist they were closed and they are usually smarter than me.

Id say the black one looks like a flea to me, do you have pets? Either way lits of info on bedbugs online (never had them so idk how to get rid of) if you got fleas clean then bomb. You will have to bomb 2-3 times a 5 days apart as poison wont kill eggs

As for place to buy bombs i use aldi ones last time when i bought my house. They seem to do very good aerosol killing gas, which is ironi as German company 😂😂😂.

    • No pets. Yes, lots of info online, that's what's causing this confusion, lol.

I shouldn't be laughing at the holocaust reference, but I guess all these insect treatments have left me dead inside.

  • Thanks guys for all the info. Looks like I'll be carpet bombing my carpets. We did buy some insect killing sprays from Bunnings over the weekend. Also got Borax powder, which we're planning to spread overnight and suck up through the vacuum. Hopefully this works, otherwise its the bombing, and then finally the professionals.
