Apple iPad Pro 10.5" 64GB Wi-Fi $649, 256GB Wi-Fi $799 (+$5.95 Delivery Regional / Free Delivery Metro / Free C&C) @ Officeworks

940

A reasonable price for a reasonable iPad. It is likely to be on clearance, but it is not categorised as such on the website.

I cannot find any stock listed in any stores according to their website, but C&C is still an option, which is especially good if you don't want to pay the $5.95 regional delivery fee.

Available models:

As a side note, I find it bizarre that Officeworks charges $5.95 to deliver an item to Canberra, yet sending it to Hobart is free. Since when was Canberra regional and Hobart not…?

My 10.5” still goes very well, not laggy at all. Looking to upgrade for USB c though myself.

  • +1

Wouldn't the iPad(2019) be a better buy at this point? 10.2 inch screen, but 2 years newer. Both support the Apple Pencil 1st Gen. 32gb model for $529, or 128gb model for $689.

    • +9

      Ipad Pro

120Hz display, better graphics card, 4 speakers, Stablised camera, 4k video recording

      • +2

The 120Hz does intrigue me. Thank you.

    • +7

It's only got A10 vs much quicker A10X in the Pro. On top of that the Pro has nicer display, camera, speakers, etc. Definitely worth it for $649 vs $529

    • +1

I am thinking the same thing. Wonder if this being 2 year older one day will stop receiving updates first compared to the 2019 iPad.

      • +4

That’s not how it works with Apple. Devices only stop getting updates when they don't have the capability to. This being a more recent iteration of the A series processors than the iPad 2019 means at worst they'll both stop receiving updates at the same time (which will be no less than 3 or 4 years from now).

        • Thanks for the info.

So this is definitely better buy than the 2019 iPad?

          • +4

@peuwayaqdq: Well, that depends on your usage. The regular iPad has closed the edge on some of the iPad Pro 2017 features. You're getting a similar sized screen, both Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard compatibilities, and a decent processor, but none of the specs are better. What you get more out of the iPad Pro 2017 is a better screen (fully laminated screen, 120Hz frequency, Wide colour display, true tone and HDR compatibility), thinner device, 4 speakers, more powerful processor and GPU units, and better front and rear cameras.

        • -7

That's not how it works either. Apple could keep updating older iPads if they wanted to, but they choose not to so people rush out and buy a new one. It has nothing to do with capability of the hardware.

          • @cerealJay: Then explain why the iPad Air 2 (a 2014 device) is still receiving updates, and will continue to do so for at least another year?

            • -8

@maburu1: Because the iPad Air 2 was discontinued only 2 years ago, and Apple will sometimes wait around 3 years before ending software support. Like they did with the original iPad Air, which has its support ended just 2 weeks ago. The iPad Air is now a paperweight according to Apple, because Apple denies you both OS ipdates and web browser updates. Apple does say YES to you spending more money on a fresh iPad. They are waiting for you. Go to them.

              Any more questions?

              • +1

@cerealJay: Well, iPad Air support was dropped because it has 1GB of RAM, while iOS 13 requires a minimum 2GB of RAM. The iPad Air enjoyed 6 years of support, which sounds plenty to me. It is also far from a paperweight, as it runs on iOS 12.4.2, which was only released a couple of weeks ago.

                • +1

@maburu1: Yeah hardly a paperweight. Sure you won’t get feature OS updates nor updates for core apps like safari. You might lose support interns of being able to update to latest version of popular apps as developers target newer iOS versions but the old legacy version of the app should function for some time. Eventually apps will lose support, stop working and the browser won’t be compatible with newer modern websites but this won’t happen for years after you lose OS updates. Usually the hardware fails before the device becomes completely unusable. It’s the same for both Android and iOS.

                  • -2

                    @Ronnnie:

Usually the hardware fails before the device becomes completely unusable

Where's your data to support that claim? My data is two iOS device paperweights in my possession. No longer supported by Apple, but still functioning perfectly fine.

but this won’t happen for years

But it happens. And it might happen when you're not ready to buy more iOS e-waste, but would rather keeping using the one you have. I'm not talking about new apps, I'm talking about a web browser that receives security updates and engine updates. Apple coupled the browser to the OS for a reason. They don't want anyone else making browsers, and they don't want anyone using old iOS devices.

                • -2

                  @maburu1:

Well, iPad Air support was dropped because…

I'll stop you right there. iPad Air support was dropped because the "obsolete" alarm clock went off, like it has for ALL previous models.

It's amusing how you're trying to make out like Apple would keep supporting these old devices if they possibly could. When a computer doesn't have enough RAM for an application, it will swap to virtual memory, and your device will run slower. Other mechanisms could be employed to prevent RAM limitations. Some features could be disabled, or not available. But instead, Apple turns their backs on the billions of hardware devices they make and spread around. Still, they will claim to be "e-friendly" and the packaging in your new iPad uses recycled cardboard, whoo hooo!

  • +1

Funny, it's two years old but still seems better than the new iPad and iPad Air (other than A12)

    • +2

Pro version vs standard. Like cars, Apple has the top end and lower end versions.

      • Toyota getting Lexus hand me down engines.

    • +3

Only cpu is lower than new air. Gpu, speaker, ssd speed are all better. Apparently Great value

  • +1

Now the question is leading to Christmas will this get any cheaper?

    • It was cheaper in the past.

      • Thanks. So this is not the cheapest yet?

        • +1

It's depend on how you interpret his statement. The price trending is going up, or there is always a jackpot lurking. 😁

        • +1

It may get cheaper once the next ipad pros get announced later this month.

    https://www.google.com/search?q=ipad+pro+10.5+white+spot&sxs…

But I guess technically this should come with 12 + another 12 months of warranty (due to our laws).

The hardware design is flawed, the connector internally pushes up on the screen and causes the white spot, eventually. Happens more if you put it in a backpack or a travel bag.

  • I'm looking to trade in my 2017 iPad. Does anyone know who does credit for a trade in? EB I know about

    • The only two options I can think of off the top of my head:

      • Apple, but you probably won't get much back for the device.
      • CeX, especially if there's one near you.
    • +1

Best bet is eBay. Despite the risks most buyers are genuine and there is a huge, liquid market for second hand iPads with really good resale values.

I’ve never had a winner with less than 10 feedback but if someone like that won it i would cancel the sale

    • mobilemonster.com.au has been known to give pretty decent pricing for iphones. a base model 64gb 10.5" pro will get $240 which isnt great though.

      • Nah they lower the value too much low, not worth it!

  • +2

This is no ordinary iPad thank you very much.

It's the last model with a home button, I am pretty sure it's the last model with a headphone jack. It's also still ridiculously fast, with 4 speakers, not 2 and a nice screen size.

    It's great.

    • +8

And if you compare the screen quality next to a normal ipad it is VASTLY better.
Don't forget last ipad pro with touchid also.

They really did peak at the ipad pro 10.5 - too many comprimises with the newer models.

    • The 10.2 and Air 10.5 both have HPJ and home buttons.

      • Sure but they ain't pro are they? Pro has some nice features.

  • +1

Apple's Pro of yesterday is better than their entry level of today - makes sense (except for the 9.7' Pro version, ick!)

    • 9.7" pro is older than this 10.5" pro

    • +1

My 9.7” pro goes heaps good still

  • how is this compared to the current pro?

    • +1

      Different story. Price doubled.

  • It seems like this model iPad Pro is the one without USB-C. Although it a better buy than the basic iPad offerings for 2019, not a good buy if you want an iPad "Pro". USB-C is a must if you want to use it for productivity.

    • +5

for productivity you'd get a surface instead

      • +1

Depends what sort of productivity you're doing. For creatives, ipad pro comes out much better. The amount of apps on Apple Store at your disposal is crazy. Windows store apps is useless.

        • Can't surface use any 64 bit program? That makes it super useful

          • @belongsinforums: Yes it can use 64bit programs. However the Surface is nothing more than a laptop with touch screen. I wouldn't use it as a tablet. It's damn heavy and windows apps is long dead. While the iPad offers the advantage of having such a huge app selection at your fingertip.
However, in a work place, the Surface is better choice as it is basically a PC.

  • Is there anyway to get discounted gift cards for office works?

  • Which one of the pros supports the apple pen? My daughter is a mad drawer and wants a pro for learning how to draw digitally. We tried with her mini and a bamboo tip but it's not suited to the task. She tried a pro and pen in store a few months back and loved it. But not sure if the pen is only for current versions?

    • +1

The Apple Pencil works with all iPad Pros, just make sure you get the first generation Apple Pencil if you get the ones with a home button, otherwise get a second generation Apple Pencil if you get one without a home button :)

    • All the generations of iPad Pro support it, however, the newer Apple Pencil 2 is made exclusively for the 2018 iPad, where as the Apple Pencil 1 is made for the iPad Pro 2016/2017. There are no differences in the inking and feel of the two Apple Pencils. The only differences between them two is that Apple Pencil 2 has wireless charging, can be magnetically attached to the iPad itself, and has a touch interface on the surface of the pen.

    • +1

      https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT205236

Apple Pencil (1st generation), you can use it with these iPad models:

      iPad Air (3rd generation)
      iPad mini (5th generation)
      iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st or 2nd generation)
      iPad Pro 10.5-inch
      iPad Pro 9.7-inch
      iPad (6th generation)
      iPad (7th generation)

Apple Pencil (2nd generation), you can use it with these iPad models:

      iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation)
      iPad Pro 11-inch

The deal here supports the 1st gen Apple pencil.

      • Thanks guys. So from a functionality standpoint, would she be any worse off with one of these Pro's thats on sale and the Ipad Pen 1, minus the wireless charging? Is there anything the newwer pro's and pen 2 can do that this and a pen 1 cant do?

  • +2

Tempting, but the 2018 iPad Pro might become cheaper if Apple releases a new one this month at their October event.

    • hence why 2017 stock and the 2018 models are slowly being moved into pre-Black Friday sales, so they can get back shelf space / inventory.

  • These iPad pro has touch screen issues. Get ready to visit apple store after a month or two.

    • Care to elborate?
I've had one and use it quite a lot for over a year and a half now and am yet to see any problems.
Would be nice to know what to look out for I guess?

      • -1

When you use it when charging. The screen is not responsive. I guess you just use it to browse internet, of course that has no issue.

        • Did you have the screen replaced?

  • I ended up getting the 2019 iPad Air 256GB Wifi instead. Just because of the A12 Bionic chip with neural engine.

    Hopefully will get longer support.

  • no buy. google iPad 10.5 pro white spot.

    • +2

Google headache and apparently you may have brain cancer.

    • +3

Two years warranty in Au. Worries free

  • Got 2017 12.9" recently. Amazing tablet, premium screen, speakers, DSP, smooth performance… Well worth as bought refurbished. Not much more expensive than 2019 new iPad.

    • +2

Especially if you play music instruments and want to use tablet for sheet music, 12.9" iPad is the best choice in market. Highly recommended.

  • I tried to purchase one via their website and as I was going through the payment section of the order it came up with an error after picking Paypal as my preferred payment method. Refreshed and tired the whole process a second time and the same thing happened, I checked my bank account and two payments of $824.95 had been taken out. I rang up officeworks and they confirmed that no orders had been placed.

Was anyone else able to purchase one?

  • +1

Come time to resell, it’s so so hard to resell this iPad Pro version as 2nd hand market wants the pro without the button.

  • "Sorry, but we could not add this product into your cart"
    :(

    • Actually, it won't let me add anything to my cart. Maybe a glitch on their site?
edit Seems to be a glitch on my Chrome browser… just successfully used Safari. Might be a Catalina OS issue. Very strange.

      • +1

Google don't want you to buy an iPad.

  • Just recently got the 64 GB iPad Air 3 (2019 version) as it was a good price on a 20% off eBay special from wireless1. Price was about $660 after discount and cashback. I had originally tried to find one of these older pro models as an option, but even refurb models were closer to the $900 mark when I was looking. The one I got also came with the one year free Apple plus streaming service, which is worth about $70 or so to those who might want it. I don't particularly care about taking photos with it or using the inbuilt speakers (I use headphones generally), so the only thing that I might miss is the superior display refresh rate. But in my mind having even a slightly better processor is more important than a faster display for my purposes, so overall I'm happy with what I got.

  • Thanks, bought at JB on price match

    • where did you manage to do that?

    • When?

    • I got JB to price match as well (Booragoon Branch, Perth) even though OW has no stock. I was planning to wait for Black Friday sale but stock appears to be limited everywhere and prices on gumtree are either crazy or not that good plus you dont get the 1 year warranty.

      • 2 year warranty on iPads. ;)

  • Got a used one for $600 with apple pencil, case and other accessories.
really good buy in my opinion compared to the Air model

  • Hi everyone,

Can anyone confirm if this is the same one as what OW is offering here? https://www.catch.com.au/product/apple-10-5-inch-ipad-pro-64…

Sorry I am not familiar with the different generations of Ipads so was hoping someone could confirm. Thank you!

    • +1

Yes, the only difference is the colour.
