Buy new iPad or fix screen?

Dropped my iPad Air 2 today like an idiot. Went to a few screen repair shops, got quoted $270 at the minimum. Issue now is whether that's worth fixing, or whether I should get a new one. What are your thoughts? I use my iPad a lot, at least 2 hours a day. It's around 5 years old but still works fine and I could probably keep it for another 5 years. If I were to buy a new one I'd definitely have to upgrade to a larger screen (otherwise I'd just fix it) which would be at least $450 for an iPad Pro 12.9in 1st gen. Worth the upgrade or should I fix?

  • Have a look on YouTube few videos how to replace the screen.

It shouldn't be too difficult and the part costs ~$140.

I've heard the Air 2 is particularly difficult (and expensive) to repair.
      Better to just upgrade.

      • Well that sucks. I have never had to open or repair iPads, I've only done iPhone repairs myself and was hoping it might be similar…

  • Did you break just the glass or the LCD as well?

If it's just the glass, might cost as little as $15 with some DIY.

The Air 2's screen is laminated (LCD is glued to the digitiser glass), so it'd be almost impossible to replace just the glass without any specialised equipment.

Sell on eBay for spare parts. There is absolutely no point in spending $270 when used Air 2s go for that price

  • I broke mine, looked at the guide and thought "Screw it. I'll have a go, if it goes wrong I'll just buy a new iPad." Turns out the replacement part is already ~$150.

  • Sounds like a good excuse for an upgrade.

A third party repair might make the iPad not worth much when the time comes that you do want to sell it. At the very least, it might make it harder to sell.

I know that Apple charge more than everyone else for their repairs, but they obviously use original parts. Or they might say that they will sell you a new iPad for however much. I don’t know what the prices are.

My suggestion is that you go to either an Apple store or an Authorised Reseller which also does repairs*. Ask them what options they have for you.

    • I might have some names wrong, but I hope that you get the idea of what I’m talking about.
