Anyone used a very cheap projector?

I am planning an art project that would benefit from adding a projector.

Resolution doesn't need to be very high, it's not about details, it's about catching people's attention when they walk past and drawing them in to interact with the other parts of the installation.

Brightness doesn't need to be very high either, it will be used outdoors, at night, in a dark place.

It doesn't need longevity, if it works well for a couple of weeks, that's all that is needed.

Main consideration: it has to be cheap - I don't want to start crying if it gets destroyed by the forces of nature or some random act of vandalism.

Has anyone used something as cheap as this $110 model? Could it do the job?

If I was to stretch the budget towards $300, has anyone tried something like this or this or should I instead look for a second hand brand model like BENQ?

    I have this one… which I find pretty good..excelvan bl46

android with Bluetooth and wifi 7000 lumens.

what I like about this one is all the vents are on the side and back so it doesn't get that hot.

I have never used a more expensive projector before but it seems to be quite bright even with lights on.

    • Thanks, looks good. Do you remember where you bought it from? How long have you used it yet?

been using it for a month or so… played movies out doors for the kids, and projected some youtube on to the ceiling to watch on bed.

I baught it for about $165 on ebay

      • Just note that it's 800x480 resolution. Also I'm a little suspicious of that 2000 lumen figure.

      • Yes, thanks for pointing it out for everyone who comes across this thread.

I became aware of this issue as soon as I started looking at models. ANSI lumens vs marketing lumens. Here's a good article on the topic.

Most listings show the the marketing lumens in the title and ANSI lumens somewhere in the small-print. But I wonder whether even the ANSI lumens quoted on Ebay and Amazon can be trusted these days. Even 2000 seems an awful lot for a $165 projector!

The other thing to be aware of is the resolution. Most sellers prominently show the maximum input resolution their product can handle, and only in the small print show the true resolution.

Just bought this pretty good value projector for $135 and it's native 720p @2000 lumens…works well for the money!

    • Are you still happy with your projector? Did you get the standard version or the Android one?

I'm a bit annoyed I missed the 15% cashback yesterday, but I'm sure similar deals will come back. I don't need it for a few more months, but for now the one you linked tops my watchlist.

I bought this one from their Ebay store for $299. I am very happy with the quality of the picture, very bright and 1080p. no issue in vision even when the room lights are on.
