The Good Guys eBay Store Not Allowing Someone Else to Pick up

I just had a bad experience with a Good Guys store that won't allow me to nominate someone else to pick up an order I made through their ebay store. For whatever reason their terms and conditions with ebay don't allow for this, even though ebay itself has no issue with it (I called them). I have a disability and it's difficult for me to travel (yes I told them; no it didn't move them). But even if that wasn't an issue, it's ridiculous that they don't have a more flexible policy. Has anyone else had this experience and found some way to resolve it? Any advice?

They have asked for photo ID for pickups for many years, and even photocopy it. Wasn't very happy with that part.

    • Photocopying may or may not be a breach of the Privacy Act, though I know that Mobile phone companies, finance companies, Car yards etc do it, to protect their product etc. They are most likely exempt.

      • With those examples, I would expect it’s to do with running credit checks. Good guys just need to sight it to confirm it’s you, so it’s ridiculous they copy it (or even write down the number).

        • They need to have it on file to prove they've checked, in case of people saying they didn't pick it up in person.

          • @HighAndDry: How many other stores have this policy? Everywhere else is satisfied with sighting your ID.

  • If you aren't able to make it into the store to pick it up can you not request that they deliver the item to you?

were you just discussing it to an employee or a manger at TGG?

I can, but didn't want to pay for delivery. I'm an ozbargainer after all.

I spoke to a manager as well.

I think I've sorted it out though. Called their feedback line.

      • I think if you provide a letter with your contact details, Copy of ID, to TGG authorising Joe Bloggs to pick up on your behalf, should suffice. I assume the invoice has your phone number on there?
They are just protecting the original purchaser, which I assume is yourself.

Next step, tel them you are cancelling and buying from some whinging old bloke for the same price (who depending on the store, may also ask for ID).

        • I tried all that, save the cancelling. They have the ebay 20% discount at the moment.

  • That's odd considering TGG allow “Friend pick-up” when purchasing via their website.

The way I get around this is to change my name on my ebay account to the person picking up the item.

  • For whatever reason their terms and conditions with ebay don't allow for this…

Since you already know they've got a rule against this, why do you still buy from them and then whinge when they refuse to bend the rules for you?

TGG doesn’t your friend to collect the item and later have you file an INR. Do the right thing and collect in person or cancel the order.

    • Exactly, you can bet that they only have this policy in place because they have been burnt before.

eBay doesn't have that policy because it doesn't effect them and sides with the buyer in the majority of instances.

      • More often that not, this type of crap is proactive, not reactive.

There are plenty of paranoid people out there, who happen to be dumb as bricks. A thought pops into their head that says 'Oh no! Someone could hurt us!' and this shakes them to the core, so they come up with some over the top method to protect themselves, that is onerous and time consuming. Then they call it a day, giving themselves a good pat on the back for saving the business.

Never mind that security measures should be as unobtrusive as possible and weighted against the possible damages. That sort of thinking is outside their grasp.

  • Ha! After presenting my WA driver's license to identify myself, Good Guys insisted to see my Paypal transaction to 'proof' that I paid for it even though I am the buyer and it was purchased under my name. Had to show the Paypal transaction to them from my phone.

    • I read out another PayPal transaction number from another purchase and they never notice! I argued that this was stupid at the earlier pickups but decided to read out another transaction number in the future. They are so far behind the times….

      • I told the person serving me that it was stupid too since I was the buyer and I’m there in person but she insisted. She didn’t just want the transaction number but she wanted to see the actual PayPal transaction either from my Paypal account or the email sent by PayPal.

        • The store I pickup from writes down the number in a book that you sign. I can't understand why when they don't check the number?!?!

          • @Maverick-au: Lady at GG said viewing the PayPal transaction is to confirm I paid for it and not a fraudulent purchase.

            • @trex: It would be so easy to fake the email and my store wants me to read out the transaction number and doesn't even want to see it! The worst part is they make you do the same crap for a $5 battery pack or a $1500 fridge.. oh wait the fridge was delivered and they didn't ask for ID or PayPal details!

              • @Maverick-au: Lol… I know! I told the lady that she already had already ID-ed me and I am the listed buyer too. This actually happened twice at GG.

  • GG very annoying about ID when it comes to collections. I often avoid buying from them online because of this.

  • Long story short, I have an issue with them today as well. The lady at the service desk insists me to show the PayPal transaction. Dumb me didn't login the PayPal at the checkout and paid by gift card when I placed the order, thus no transaction recorded in PayPal.The lady told me she can't proceed the order for me as the name wasn't matching the order after I provided my driver license. She also refused to see order confirmation and pick up ready emails from my phone. After a bit of argument, she told me she has to photocopy my driver license for fraudulent concern. I got my order eventually, but I feel discomfort with the collection procedure honestly. Mostly because GG photocopied my driver license. Should I worry about my privacy at this stage?

  • Unfortunately the good guys is very inconvenient for store pickup, you usually get grumpy looks and takes a bit of time for them to find the item that is marked as ready for pickup. Additionally they don't seem to understand the Pivacy Act Law, and how they really are shot allowed to write down/record ID, in their case silly citing it is sufficient. I have argued this with the manager in one of the stores in detail and had to get their head office involved to get them remove my ID from the form (funnily enough form states it is optional to record ID).
Best part was the head office does not seem to understand simply stating we have a take your privacy seriously and your ID is only used for identification is not enough, they need to provide information on how the ID is stored securely and how they destroy it after certain time…
But at the end of the day I really don't get why on earth they need to write down ID for a $5 USB cable… If I had more time I would pursue this further and get them to stop recoding ID as it is illegal (they simply cannot justify it).
For now I've stopped buying from them in the form of pickup, their loss.

  • These sorts of rules are up to the discretion of the cashier just as often as not. Studies have shown that people tend to be more open to persuasion from attractive people.

So.. have to tried getting more attractive friends?

  • So I had this exact same issue right now, and I googled it thinking I may not be the only person to have this issue…and I'm correct.

I got an email from Good Guys saying my Dyson order is ready to pick up but that it had to be the buyer or a person they nominate.

This was confirmed by Seu from Good Guys online, but said we had to nominate the picker upper in advance by emailing Moore Park GG.

I did so, and Krish from Moore Park GG said they would refuse to give the order to anyone except the listed buyer. So they contradict both GG's own automated email AND their online team member.

Pretty bad. I'm not sure how this pickup is going to happen.
