  • Up to 50% off?

    • +2

No, it is 50% off (max $10)

  • +17

    Barefoot investor cheaper here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/488416

  • +10

Barefoot Investor is $9.50 @ Big W for the "Digi Deals" sale, https://www.bigw.com.au/product/the-barefoot-investor/p/5294…

Can only be bought online but can be picked up in store for free. Cheaper using Wish cards as payment and you also get a "Free Book for Kids", https://www.bigw.com.au/medias/sys_master/images/images/h10/…

  • +3

Barefoot Investor is $9.50 at BigW (less with discount wishcards) without any cash back delays/missed tracking
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/488416

    I’m sure there’s better examples ;-)

    This would be $11.22

  • Bought my sons school books from them last week, with the 12% shopback got more than $10 back.. Unfortunately I got hit with a foreign transaction fee. Probly should have used paypal not CC. Just a warning for those that didn't know.

    • +6

I got hit with a foreign transaction fee. Probly should have used paypal

Except paypal by default has it’s own terrible forex rate by default. You need to manually change it for each transaction.

And why are you on OzB and don’t have a 28degrees card???? You could be your OzB license revoked for that!

      • +2

        True. The shame is real..

      • I was too slow :D

      • How do you manually change it??

      • or just pay with PayPal via any Amex

      • Ignorant scrub here, thanks for opening my eyes to 28degrees.
Easy to apply or do I need a bunch of government docs and ID etc?

        • +1

I assume so, along with credit score checks. Usual stuff when applying for a CC

        • +2

28degrees card isn't that good since they axed the bonus insurances. If you're just after a card with no foreign transaction fees, there are plenty of debit options. Macquarie and Up are two off the top of my head.

    • Paypal doesn't have foreign transaction fees but their exchange rates are not the best. Better to use 28 degrees card or something similar.

      • +1

That's a soft way of putting it, not the best. I'll stand corrected if their rate is not the worst by far.

    • +3

I've found in most cases it's cheaper to use a VPN and order via the UK version anyway. They still add gst on at the end but it's virtually always been 10-20% cheaper still.

      • Does that work with cashbacks?

        • Actually not sure, I have a Quidco account for UK cashbacks still and it certainly works there… though I did run the last one through Shopback and its set to confirm or reject soon.

      • Thanks for the info about shopping via VPN in the UK because I saved about 1/3 on the book I bought using this method! It is amazing how often you can find anomalies in pricing for items going through the same website in different countries.

    • +1

Yes PayPal is the way to go here. Not sure why people drift off into talking about exchange rates, BookdDepository shows AUD prices and charges in AUD.

It's only due to fairly recent (couple of years perhaps) changes to bank fees that extra fees apply to payments made to an overseas business, regardless of currency. Paypal has a local subsidiary and therefore avoids that.

  • +2

    Does this work on pre-orders?

    • I want to know this too! thinking of pre-ordering A Clash of Kings 20th anniversary ed which comes out next month.

    • Just pre-ordered Vox Machina Origins.
Got my Cashback notification ~5mins later for $10 :D

  • +13

I find using https://booko.com.au/ usually allows me to determine whether Book Depository is offering the best price (even accounting for their 'free' delivery)

    • +1

And when you go through booko you get free shipping from booktopia, for any amount of order

    • +1

I love seeing people mention Booko. Fantastic website which deserves much more love than it gets.

  • +1

can't even find what the t&c's are. Does it have to be through the app? through the website?

    • I ordered through website and got tracking in ShopBack 5 minutes later.

  • Is the shopback restricted to purchases of books only at book depository?

  • Thanks OP. Hopefully no issues with cashback post

Edit: Cashback tracked already after about 10 minutes for the full $10 (book cost was $25)

  • +1

how can we determine which books are eligible for the full 50% cashback?

  • +1

    I don't understand it…says max $10 back and only 1 transaction

    • 1 transaction per customer. $10 max cashback from books e.g. $20 book would give $10 cashback, meaning you cannot get anymore cashback from that offer.

      • That is correct. last 50% cashback I didn't read it properly I purchased 300$ and got only 10$ back so be careful

      • Which is weird because I just ordered a book that was $21.33 and got $9.65 cash back

        • +3

          GST excluded probably

        • +1

They probably subtract the GST from the price before calculating the cashback, in which case that's a couple cents off what you would expect. You'd need to spend at least $22 to get the full $10.

    • +1

wouldn't it just be easier to say $10 off per order then? it's hardly 50 percent cashback unless you buy only 1 book for under 20 bucks.

Has anyone tried doing numerous seperate orders eg getting 10 bucks back each order?

      • Then people would order a book for $12 and complain that they didn't get $10 back.

  • +1

Waiting for Barefoot Investors Asian Edition

    • Or, "How to be a Crazy Rich Asian".

    • +1

Most of the book especially saving money is already built in Asian DNA

  • I clicked via my desktop PC / Chrome browser / ShopBack website and made a purchase around 10:30am.

Within 20 mins, I received an email notification stating that the purchase was tracked. $10. :)

I purchased $30 worth of children books.

  • +1

In case anyone is looking for inspiration – got The Body: A Guide for Occupants (Paperback) - Bill Bryson the last time this flash sale happened, for Christmas for my mum.

Thinking about The Escape Book: Can you escape this book? or The Conjurer's Almanaq or similar puzzle book this time, also for a Christmas gift, just falling into a rabbit hole of reading reviews and comparing what they cost elsewhere

Interested to see if anyone spots a good deal even so I am prepared for the next one.

    • +1 for Bill

I could only see the expensive hardcover version (for delivery this year) the paperback is late May 2020.

  • +1

    I only received $9.65 back so think it's pre-GST :(

    GST A$1.91
    Total A$21.09

    • Exactly. So it would seem the maximum value can be had by buying a book for exactly $22 (=$20+$2GST), giving $10 cashback. Only 45.45%.

Still happy. I'm glad I keep a list of "books to buy when there's a special".

  • We can do this again if we did it last time?

  • Bought Edward Snowden's "Permanent Record" and got $10 back. Nicely done.

  • Nice cashback - puts the non-iron work shirts at ~$40

  • Argh I missed it by a few minutes.

    • +1

Oh that's a really good point actually… these deals should really start listing the timezones in the titles now that Daylight saving is back on for half the country.

Sitting here at 11am wondering why it was over already when it was advertised as running until 12..

      • +1

Yep, daylight savings got me as well! And I was just about to buy a book I've been eyeing off.

Timezones on posts would be a great addition.

        • Shopback's website lists it all as AEST.

          • @ATangk: I'm looking at the Uniqlo page on Shopback right now and it says AEDT. Not AEST.

            • @Nuggets: Thats totally what I meant… Haha oops yeah AEDT.

  • +1

How do I get up to 60% off in that uniqlo deal?

    • +1

      want to know too

    • Pretty sure it just means sale stock is up to 60% off.

  • I bought a book from Book Depository last week. Checked the price this morning and it went up by $8. Isolated case or price jacking?

  • Jeez order a real book, folks. The Barefoot Investor is trash. Maybe something like this https://www.bookdepository.com/Darkness-by-Design-Walter-Mat…

  • Under Armour 30% cashback starting at 2pm.

    • Still says 20%…

      • That it does… But I dont know if 30% is enough to get me to buy anything…

  • Temporarily unavailable by shopback 🤣

    • I certainly hope not, I just made a purchase through shopback on some under armour shoes..

      • now its back

  • There is any coupon code working with that deal in under armour?

    • WUA10

      • but that code will not work with shopback?

        • really? i didn't know that… well that's farked.

          • @ipiok: because we can use only those codes which is provided by shopback

  • +1

I got burnt by 2 minutes late time and Iconic returns are a pain!

One thing to note, if you buy 5 items and want to return 1 you lose all the cashback! I was told this by Shopback when I asked about returning 1 out of 4 items, I was told I'd lose the entire 30% cashback.

So I would do separate orders if you're unsure for every item when using Shopback.

    • useful tip thanks

  • From the banner on ShopBack, looks like tomorrow will include ebay and groupon

  • I'm so sad. Managed to miss the Uniqlo and Book Depository times :(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((
