Credit Card Company Double Credited Payment

Hi all,
I was recently going through my credit card statement and found that the exact same payment had been credited to my account twice, one month apart. I checked my bank records and I definitely only paid my card with that amount one time and there is nowhere else it could have come from. So I rang the bank to report what I can only assume was a computer system error. The (American - just sayin') guy was incredibly condescending, would not listen to me trying to tell him there had been a mistake and just kept explaining that I had set up a direct debit and that was the reason why it was there. I had to leave the phone call at that point and I am extremely put off calling them back to sort it out given the first interaction and the fact it is so painful to contact them and wait in a queue. What's the likelihood this will bite me on the arse if I leave it and should I report it?

Report it as they will come back and get me

Leave it and see what happens, can't be too bad

  • Not your mistake but it is likely they'll correct the error so don't go spending the money yet.

  • Depends on how much it was for. If a considerable sum, say over 4 figures then I would inform the bank in writing and leave it up to them to sort it out. That way your ass is covered. For a lower amount just make a note that you reported it and leave it be.
Many years ago a bank overcharged my cc and when I got them to correct it they did it twice … :-)

    • Good point- it's 1.5k by the way

With all due respect you have already reported it. Just sit tight.

  • -1

Only have to return it if asked.

What is the point of this poll? Are you hoping someone will say "oh well you tried, the money is now yours"?
You've already tried reporting. Just leave it until they pick up on it. If they never do, then hooray but don't bank on it.

    • Interested in what other people think obviously…

Did you have a secret admirer that did this for you? Or Santa came early? Lol

You've reported it to ozbargain. Your work is done.

If they come asking you questions, just refer them to this post.

(on a serious note, I'd leave it. Don't assume you're 1.5k richer but in say, 12 months time if they haven't done anything by then, it probably won't get fixed)

    • Definitely not assuming it's mine, just wondering if this has happened to anyone else and what happened

Close the card, and go else where

  • I've had this happen on a Coles Mastercard.

Don't spend the money as they will reverse it eventually.

Yep looks like their system then, it just reversed. They tried to charge me $15 bucks for the privilege as well.

      • I'd forgotten about that. Yes, they try and charge you for their mistake. Call centre pain required.

      • +1

If you do call them or go into a branch to reverse it you should bill them $50 for the time they're wasting

        • I was told I didn't pay toll on an untagged car. Was charged a billing fee bigger than the toll itself.

I had proof of payment. Tried to get them to pay me for having to access payment database.

No luck. Even ombudsman was useless.

This is simply exercising the same entitlement these companies hold so dearly.

          • @[Deactivated]: Toll operators are hard to bargain with because they don't value their reputation. They don't have any happy customers or loyal customers. They also don't have a venue for you to complain with witnesses. Banks are much more vulnerable to legitimate complaints.
