Engine Oil for Mazda 2 Neo Sport - Automatic 2013 Model

Hi All,

I am planning to have my car serviced though one one the groupon vouchers and the mechanic has advised that they use said that they use some refined oil for Groupon Services.. Could anyone suggest me a decent oil which would suit my car and will do no damage to the engine?

Its a spare car and used only to drive to train station. Thanks a lot in advance

    Most 5W-30 oil will do.

Super Cheap Auto or wherever the oil is purchased from can advise or just Google it.

Expect the mechanic to recommend additional work.
    Groupon… Just saying

Is he really asking you to buy your own oil because he thinks his oil is dodgy & not suitable for modern cars?
If you do get him to just use the oil he has presumably there would be comeback if his service damaged your engine?
Maybe discuss with Groupon to get a refund & get another one from a decent mechanic (perhaps calling them first to make sure they don't do something similar?).

Any 5w30, preferably semi synthetic. A fully synthetic would be a waste of money, you likely wouldn’t get any benefit. I’d recommend Castrol Magnatec, on sale quite a lot at Supercheap for $20-$25

5W-30 is going to be the best choice. I would go for semi-synthetic - you get some of the benefits of synthetic, but it comes in much cheaper. To be honest, it depends on where you live, if the temperature fluctuations are wild, I'd consider fully synthetic, for general "capital city" weather, you'll be fine.

  • So you are getting the cheapest service possible but want to ‘uograde’ the oil? And for a spare car? I know this is ozbargain, but I’m finding this funny.

    • Not sure why you find it funny..Obviously i want to upgrade my oil out of my expense.. i wish to purchase this and provide it to the mechanic .

The mechanic should be supplying the oil. If you're buying the oil, you might as well change it yourself. Takes you 30 mins.

        I find it funny becuase
        A. Why get the cheapest service and then try to upgrade the oil. Chances are the service could be done at home in 30min
        B. Why are you worrying about the oil in a spare car for going to the station. Anything will probably do, unless you are doing big kms.

      • i wish to purchase this and provide it to the mechanic

I find it funny because the mechanic has done some marketing brainstorming on how they can get some more business and came up with the idea of a cheap Groupon service offer. Cheap and basic – if customers want more they need to pay additional.

Then as a result of this marketing ploy, high value customers like you respond wanting to supply their own oil!

I mean good on you for chasing a dollar but it kind of feels like you're going against the grain to get there

  • Thanks all for the info.. I will go with recommended 5w30 semi synthetic

  • what does this mean?

    some refined oil

    • I was also curious about this. I thought they just sucked it out of the ground and shoved it straight into the bottle.

      • Probably means recycled or something. Ie take old engine oil and clean it. Refined mean has a lot better stigma than recycled. Who would want second hand oil in their engine?

        • The first retail workshop I was at used recycled oil in a "one size fits all" drum. We sold it to the recyclers for 4c/litre and bought it back for 19c/l. I didn't run the place and had no idea what was going on.

I was fresh out of my apprenticeship in a government workshop where we also used the same oil in every vehicle. I can't even remember doing a class on oil types / differences at TAFE although we spent weeks on learning how to overhaul a Holden red motor.

We had a few cars that burn't the stuff really badly but I can't recall any actual mechanical issues. We even had some idiot with a Mazda RX7 rotary as a regular and I kept telling him to go to the Mazda specialist in the next suburb because I didn't have a clue.
